I think of Necromancy as any magic directly involving the dead. It doesn't have to solely be raising their corpses. Controlling or communing with actual spirits would definitely fall under my definition of necromancy.

Miranda Falairgold's A second chance at life has a very AU Harry (Or Rahkesh Asmodeus as he calls himself) who dabbles in necromancy.

It's set post sixth year but not set in or around Hogwarts (It's set in Canada). It's filled with cliches, but the author has built an impressive AU for the story. It has a very detailed magic system and you get to see some very large scale magics. Harry is super powered, but there are others more powerful than him.

There is some slash that does not include Harry , bisexual/gay vampires, elves and a variety of other hominid beings.

I read the story for its grand scale. If you haven't read it yet, you could give it a shot.

 

One of Santi's early fanfics features a Necromancer!Harry. It's called Harry Potter & the Vampire's Kiss. It's pretty crappy, but it's to be expected of his early work.

Why do all Necromancers go straight for the army of zombies?

Where is the Ectomancy? Where is the questioning and divining the dead? Where is the healing via necromancy? Where is the haunting and binding and summoning of spirits?

The forms of necromancy that involve fewer dead bodies always seem to get ignored.

 

Renegade Cause actually has necromancy in it, though I don't think it's ever explicitly labeled as such. Several different kinds, too.

 

Aye rereading RC is what got me in the mood for some necromancy themed fics.

Not sure if it's been mentioned here, but there was an odd one where Harry shows up at Hogwarts a 'necromancer' and somewhere in the first few chapters resurrects Hermione after she's been killed by the troll. It's been years since I've seen it, so I don't know if it is finished or if it is complete crap. Still better than the other one I was actually enjoying till it turned into a gay vampire love fest.

I remember there was this one Necromancer Harry fic from '06 or so where he got necromantic ability but couldn't control it. It had him in a love triangle with Daphne Greengrass and Fleur, and I forget what it was called.

It was a Year 5 AU as well.

 

You're probably thinking of Harry Potter and the Litany of Blood. It involves a love triangle with Fleur and Fem!Blaise, and an untrained 'true necromancer' Harry. It's still decent, even by today's standards. Unfortunately, it seems to be abandoned.

Thread necromancy I know, but I'm looking for a fanfiction I read a while back. I think it was on fanfiction.net but I'm not positive since I can't find it there.

It was either a one-shot or pretty close to it, and if I remember right it was a complete story.

Basic Plot: The war is over, and some new (unknown) insane dark lord is running around committing mass murder, no one knows who he is, and Hermione is sort of in charge of finding out and stopping him.

The twist is that it's Harry, and he's gone batshit insane because he literally cannot die. He got deep into necromancy and is running around committing atrocities in order to figure out how to kill himself, or at least that's how he justifies it. Hermione eventually figures out it's him, and the ending is a ritual that drains his or both of their magic completely in order to at least try and stop him, with him saying something along the lines of hoping that this works.

 

@Lehiye You've been kinda necroposting, commenting about this story. Granted it appears it's about necromancy, however it seems pretty awful. Congrats to the author if it's their way of dealing with trauma, but the bashing & completely unbelievable characterization bring down this story hugely.

Since this thread started, Blood Crest has been published, a story that has necromancy at its core and, dare I say, one of the best stories out there.
