I agree about the color scheme. I am VERY excited by this project. Is there anything I can do to help? :D :D

It wasn't a true Lorem Ipsum document, it was a single paragraph repeated over and over, so I think that's why the compression was so good. Either way, the compression cuts a bunch of space requirement out.

Charlie, I'm not sure, most of what needs to be done is backend work or some web work.

Also, we'll have another color scheme, just not right off the bat.

Thats true, it could of just done something like *repeat paragraph 1" on every line. I know nothing of code, just assuming the one item repeated over and over did it.

I know that someone has already made a simuliar apeal for a way to save as a pdb\lit\other portable eBook format, but I was wondering if there were a way to select 'Grab all chapters' for download? Something like the way pictureview.com does with images, where youy can select an option to nab all the piuctures in that group posted and download them as a zipped archive.

Another option I'd prefer is if there were a way to select 'focus' characters without these needing to be the 'ship' of the fic. For example awhile back I recall reading a decent Duddley + Harry friendship fic. I stumbled upon it by accident but never could figure out a decent way to search for it... Having a choice to sort by focus characters that are not neccessarrily the ship of the story would facilliate this. Or if I just want to read a lot of fics with Luna as a main character...

I'm not sure if this idea was given already since I'm currently too lazy to read all the posts in this thread but maybe you could make a way to choose more than just 2 main characters at once both when making a new story and when searching for one.

That way it would be easier to find a specific story if you forgot the title and stuff by jsut putting in maybe two or three of the main characters the author chose. Say the main characters were Harry, Ron and Hermione. If someone searches for stories with Harry and Ron as characters or Ron and Hermione or Harry and Hermione, that particular fic would show up.

And for those who already know the exact characters they could 'lock' their search within those main characters only. Meaning searching for Harry and Hermione won't bring out fics with Harry, Ron and Hermione as main characters.

It sounds complicated I know but it's actually useful.

Right, which is what I was suggesting in the second part of my post-- but its important to note that this is a seperate setting from the one for ships! In other words, if I run a search with Ron and Harry as the main characters I'm looking for a fic about their friendship or having them deal with something as a team - NOT attempting to find a slash fic!

I got really squicked out when doing a search for the fic I mentioned above...I did a search with Harry and Dudley as the main characters, not knowing that I was actually doing a ship fic! :puke:

I can stomach slash sometimes, but not unless I'm prepared for it ahead of time or unless the fic is of good enough quality I can ignore it. Dudley + Harry is just wrong. I can see them maybe necoming friends in certain situations--or at least not being cruel to each other... but in a loving relationship?

This sounds absolutely amazing. Kudos to you Raven.

I was wondering about the authors page. Will that be easy to navigate and have a good stats system? I think that ff.net have quite a good system in terms of stats and author facilities.

Also, I think that authors should be able to delete ridiculous troll ratings. E.g. if a punk wanted to be funny, (s)he could rate the story a 1 (or 0 depending on how low the ratings go) without any good reason. This'll dramatically drop the average rating and stop other people reading it. Perhaps the author could get permission from admins or something?

Finally, would it possible for there to be a system where atrocious stories (spg wise) that can hardly be read will not be allowed on the site? I mean not anywhere near as harsh as fictionalley (who are assholes about it) but not as flimsy as ff.net.

That would require too much administration... much more than a new site could handle.

There will indeed be a feature to download the chapters as HTML form, with a addendum attached stating where it came from and who wrote it, as well as a HTML comment in the header. The stats bit I probably won't allow to drop stats, I might though. The character search will be difficult, but I'll allow three to be selected. Also, I will put a requirement for passable spelling and grammar in the policy. Trash will not be tolerated.

Great! I'm sick and tired of reading an excellent plot summary which then leads to a strange mesh dubbed as 'English'.

I didn't really understand this. Does that mean there'll be no author stats? The hits count is particularly useful; that's the only one I'd push for. However I'm iliterate when it comes to computers so if it's difficult and will waste time then forget it.

What about the auto-zip 'get all chapters of this fic' feature I asked about? Seriously I've never seen anything like this in the fanfiction communities and I honestly think it'd be a killer feature in the long run. You might have to make it a advanced users only or registered members only thing though with a serverside flag to indicate whetehr or not user-X had downloaded all chapters before to prevent abuse, I think it's be worth it to have.

    --bornagainpenguin

PS: Thank you for all the work you've obviously put into things-- I don't want to appear ungrateful even as I push for the features I love. Thank you for adding the non-ship character search for us!

    Good idea.

Of course there will be stats. I already have a chapter-by-chapter hitcount and review count, then the favorite author stuff is easy, just a simple count query. I was talking about people dropping ratings. It'd probably have to be a "report to moderator" case-by-case basis. I'll probably list that deviating from the norm and not giving actual reasons will subject that rating to being disabled.

Maybe that could be one of the incentives you guys were kicking around earlier in the thread for donating to the server? If so, please--please allow prepaid visa cards as a payment option! I cannot use paypal for various reasons and not allowing prepaid visa is just (IMHO) stupid when its just as good as cash!

Thanks! What do you think about making the ability to click 'download all chapters in a zip archive' a incentive to donators only, as mentioned above? After all if you're going to make extra work for the server you ought give something back, right?

I would allow prepaid visa, but card processors are a LOT of money. I might be able to set it up through 2checkout, but I don't really know about it.
