I've seen that. It could be an end, or it could not be an end.
Too me, it was artificially fake. Way to corny at the end, but it is still the best fan made ending to the series.
This also raises the point, I don't find the ending of the anime in movie and series that horrible.
However, I do find that link you gave us quite amusing.

To those who love Eva, Best Eva Link Yet. Unluckily the wiki they are making is down though.

*Edit* One of the best images yet. How Anno would really respond if he told the truth on Evangelion.

Bit of a bump, but I was actually going to make an Eva thread before it occurred to me to see if there already was one, and here we are. Some updates too. [Fair warning: Spoilers below.]

I first watched NGE a couple years ago and was turned off by the twisted nature of...well, everything, and really irritated by Shinji's complete lack of spine and motivation.

However, I recently re-watched the entire series and like it a lot more the second time around. Shinji's complete doormat-ness still pisses me off to no end, but I found myself really sucked into the world. The mecha action is entertaining, the flashes of humor appropriately funny, but what I really like about Neon Genesis is how it's completely different from any other anime I've come across, what with the trippy symbolism and storyline. I don't really hate Asuka as I think a lot of people tend to, sympathize with her if anything, mostly because of her so thoroughly fucked up past. I mean, yeah Shinji has a (mostly) dead mother and a manipulative and distant father, but he's got nothing on Asuka. Then again, you could say that about numerous members of the cast...

I have to admit that I wasn't really a fan of End of Evangelion. I'm of the opinion that it was partly influenced by Anno's irritation at his idiot, death-threatening fans etc, hence the (slightly gratuitous) debacle that was Asuka’s last battle (the battle itself was boss but disembowelment? Really?). And the whole Shinji-visits-comatose-Asuka thing was just sick. The whole Third Impact montage though was super trippy in a twisted, what the hell is going on kind of way that surprisingly I didn’t really mind, and color me stunned when Shinji FINALLY grows a pair and rejects Instrumentality. I did like the ending, though; confusing and vague it may have been but it was also open ended enough that you have some hope for the Shinji and Asuka (and fanfiction :awesome).

Uh, just re-read above and it makes it seem like I really hated EoE; I didn’t, but just the things listed above really bothered me. I’ll always love the entire series, though.

Oh, also, has anyone watched Rebuild of Evangelion? 1.0 and 2.0 are both out (1.0 in 2007 and 2.0 in 2009), but I haven’t been able to bring myself to watch them because of all the purported changes they made (like changing Soryu to Shikinami). Small things, yeah, but enough to scare off a fangirl like myself haha.

So thoughts on the series, EoE, Rebuild, the manga (which I’ve never read) or even any decent fanfic?

    Yah.

First, you should understand that Rebuild isn't a straight remake of NGE. The first movie is mostly an updated version of the first six episodes, though that has a few marked changes. The second episode veers away entirely by the end. The third, who the fuck knows what'll happen.

The popular theory is that it's actually a sequel, though the details are complicated, especially if you haven't seen it yet.

You should definitely watch it though.

Read the manga. It updates slow as shit (it started before NGE even aired, and it's still only halfway through adapting EOE), but it's worth reading. They change a few things. Not the actual sequence of events, at least up to where it is now, but some minor shifts.

Eva fanfic... Chengar Qordath has a good Dresden Files/Evangelion crossover going now. There's Shinji and Warhammer40k, though that one lost me after a while. Note that that one's not actually a crossover in the traditional sense, it just becomes heavily influenced by WH40K. I can't really think of any others at the moment.

    EDIT:
Oh, and that. I didn't really think of it, since it's not really a fanfic (it's a doujin), but that definitely counts.

Make sure to get the uncensored version. ;)

EDIT 2: ... And there's Aeon Natum Engel and its rewrite, Aeon Entelechy Evangelion. Crossover with an RPG (I think) called CthulhuTech.

Welcome to the world of Eva Fanfic. :p

Time-travel, but with a twist. Gendo gets a second chance and nothing turns out the way he expects or plans. The writing is really exceptional in there, and it's a pretty unique idea. Sadly, not completed.

    Taking Sights.

Crossover time. Cthulu/Eva. The writing is below average for the first couple chapters, but it hits it stride a little ways in. Still doesn't go over decent, but the ideas behind it are just unbelievable. Its the standard that a lot of the old eva fics measured themselves against. Was started before the turn of the millennium. Still love the hell out of it. Some parts do drag, the dream arch for one, but overall great.

    Children of an Elder God.

Mary Sue time! (He's the son of Fox Mulder and Lara Croft.) I can't stand reading this again, but this as one of the first fics I ever read. Its very infamous in the older circles of eva-fics. It's not badly written or paced, but it's a self-insert obviously. The funny thing, the author inserts himself twice! As the lead, then as another side character. It is complete, though.

    Neon Exodus Evangelion.

The Ultimate Fanmade Manga. Read it 1,2,3,4,0,After. It is NSFW, so watch-out. It's not based around porn, there are just some scenes in there with it. The majority of it is not fap-material so you could skip past those scenes and really not miss anything.

    Re-Take.

That should keep you busy for a time.

As to the series. It's pretty bad-ass, especially when you realize it's a complete deconstruction of the mecha genre in anime. Really haven't encountered such complex characters in any other medium, which is why I like the story so much. As to Rebuild. Watch'em. You'll probably not like them as much, especially two if you like Asuka, but there's some good scenes in there. Especially, the redone Ramiel battle in the first one. It was epic.

Also...Mari-Sue. (I would really like to know her back-story, because right now, there's little reason she should be in the movies.)

NGE is one of the most interesting anime ever created. Sure, you can say all bad things about it as some do, but you can't say it doesn't make people stop and think about it, unlike 99% of other series.

I haven't seen Rebuild yet, still waiting for the rest of it to be released. I'm not fan of the changes in characters (Asuka), but I'm curious how creators will decide to end it and it still presents Evangelion to kids who don't watch "old" anime.

I'm much more frustrated by manga (the first main series) that should have ended years ago, dammit. Compared to Sadamoto, even the slowest authors like Miura (guy doing Berserk) are speed demons.

I would have to concur that Eva is kind of awesome. The only two animes I've ever watched are Death Note & NG Evangelion. Death Note I stopped at episode 17 (ending was spoiled to me) and Eva at 9 cause fucking hell shinji's (absence of) attitude pissed me off. A protagonist with that large of a defeatist look just rubbed me the wrong way.

I still got the whole thing in my drive though. I look at it and I say:

"Some day I'll watch that shit."

Watch Rebuild. It's quicker than the original series and considered "Adaptation Distillation" at the finest. You take a good anime, and prune away the faulty parts, even those which you didn't even know existed. Afterwards, you add some great new material (e.g. the new action scenes) and make some interesting changes to the characters.

    It's damn, damn good.

Yes, Asuka's more mellow (translation: less bitchy/broken) attitude is different, but all the characters have more healthy psyches now. Shinji actually gets a backbone. =O

Meh, I liked Shinji in Evangelion. He was just a teenager with a bit of a fucked up childhood, and his reactions to these major events fell in line with it. He felt very real to me.

Man, I need to rewatch this someday.

I heard that 3.0 got a release date or something a while ago (maybe it was just a trailer that was released?). Anyone have information on that?

That spoiler was certainly intriguing, hmm I might give it a try then, thanks for the heads up!
Changes or no, I don't see how they're gonna get away from 3rd Impact, but I doubt they would even consider that anyway...
Good to know. I'm afraid I don't really have the patience to read manga online, but since that's virtually the only way I guess I'll have to get over it. I do plan to read this eventually though.

Many thanks (I'd give you a thumbs up but I don't have enough posts yet:facepalm), I'll be sure to sift through those. Re-take looks really interesting; I didn't know "fan manga" even existed! To be honest, I usually tend to not really go near NSFW stuff haha but if this is good as you say I'll give it a read.

Last I heard Fall 2012 for Japan, anyway.

    Another EVA fag here.

One of the best parts about the manga is the flashback (I believe is vol. 9 or 10, while Shinji was stuck inside EVA-01 following the fight where he was absorbed due to 400% synchronization), where we see the birth of NERV.

Following the events of Rebuild 2.0, and after
Shinji actually convinced his mother, aka EVA-01 to lend him her power, and got out to save Asuka in time
people are really hoping that Shinji gets a good ending here. But as of the latest
Shinji and EVA-01, upon spreading the wings of light, was stopped by the Spear of Longinus and captured by the EVA series.

    @Red Aviary
Gendoh saving Shinji and explaining his motives is actually pretty awesome... especially because it showed that he's less of a bastard and resolved some of their problems.

    Best bit of EVA 2.0
Click at your own peril, though, since this is the ending and thus, spoils EVERYTHING.

Yeah, at the moment the third movie is scheduled for Fall next year, though that means we'll have for the DVD release until mid 1013.

Apparently initially it was planned to release the fourth movie right after the third - though considering the delay of the first movies, I doubt that will happen.

With "Rebuild" Anno managed to further develop the plot without changing the atmosphere of the story. The second movie is almost entirely new, nevertheless still feels like it might have been part of the series. Shinji changed a lot, but it's a gradual progress, not a replacement with an ooc personality.

Thus the movies capture my interest as much as the series, and I don't feel spoiled or bored knowing where it goes.

    Whoa, when did that happen?

I just thought he pulled the power himself to save Rei, not Asuka. And when did Gendo explain his motives to Shinji?

I just watched Rebuild 2.0 a few weeks ago and don't remember any of that. Is my memory that bad?

So, the third movie has a release date? Cool. It also seems right now that the fourth one is not gonna to be showed alongside it. Shame. Another few years to wait before we see the ending.

I think he's confusing things with the latest few chapters of the manga, where Shinji goes out to fight the MP EVAs with Asuka.

Oops, my bad, what I meant was that following the events of Rebuild where he
becomes a GOD to save Rei
people were hoping that Manga!Shinji would
become a GOD to save Asuka.

    Sorry for the confusion.

Question about the manga - I know that an author/mangaka (think his name is Sadamoto?) other than Anno produces the manga, so are the changes y'all are discussing above approved/influenced by Anno at all? Not that I mind or anything, but is the manga still considered, for lack of a better word, canon?

Sadamoto had a huge part in Evangelion's development (he was the art director guy-person). So it's not the same situation as, say, a Western novelization of a film where the writer is sort of picked out of a hat by a publishing company. I don't know about Anno having a hand in it. I don't think he does. Like I said though, the changes aren't very substantial in the scheme of events. Though some are more palatable.

For example, Shinji doesn't masturbate over Asuka. Instead he says she's like a doll, which brings her out of her catatonia and makes her choke him in a rage. In a way I think it's an improvement.
As for its canonization... I wouldn't sweat over it. Consider anything that isn't the TV series an alternate universe.
