How much do you need to know about the game to read it?

Well the author is not big on explaining background information, his previous fic skipped over a lot. So at least a basic understanding of the story and people could be useful.

If it is pretty awesome, why don't you put it up for review?

I realize I don't have any say in this, but I just wanna say that I miss how Almost Recommended used to work.

As far as I can tell, we now have less stories up For Review, and even less put in the Almost Recommended threads as you keep saying to put them up For Review.

I miss the discussions we had about fics, and then collectively we'd sometimes decide that the fic deserved to be put up For Review. That was cool. Now if a story is put up and isn't rated well, it's put in the trash bin and lost forever. Even if someone might of enjoyed it, despite it not being DLP worthy. Which just makes people want to put stories up For Review less often.

There's less judgement in these threads.

    Just my 2c.

You mean except for that part where the Review Board has been as active as it hasn't been in ages, ever since the new rule?

Read the first story of the Madness series, and I loved it. I'm 8 chapters in to Madness at the Gate, and I like it a lot too despite knowing fuck all about Stargate. Just turn your brain off, grab some popcorn, and enjoy it.

This is great though I would call it a light comedy than crack. A gimmick story done right.

Edit: Ok, I take that back. It's crack:)

Yeah, no. Your post is bullshit and you and everyone who gave you thumbs knows it.

Almost Recommended worked like the now established rules, until people became too lazy to post something for review. Instead almost everything ended up in here just because people couldn’t be bothered to spend five to ten more minutes into their post.

The place to discuss where a story goes has always been the review board. The only one who is affected by the new old rules is the one person who posts a story and the question if that person can be bothered to add a few minutes and braincells into a more formalised posting format. And you really don’t need more than two minutes for that if you copypaste the ff.net head, add a few line breaks and the descriptors (Title, Author, …) – that’s basically all I did with the stories I posted.

I am sure ‘0800 Rent a Hero’ wouldn’t have gotten the same attention if I had posted it in here. And yeah, it's been discussed harshly. That's what DLP is about.

    About the lost part:
Stories posted in here are lost by default. Just try to follow the discussion of 'Madness at the Gate' mentioned a few posts above.
Stories in the trash bin aren't. Quite a few times I have allowed to repost stories already posted in the trash bin or I placed it up for review again. And no one stops you from discussing a trashed story in here.

I agree with the changes and on balance prefer the newer format over the old.

I would mention that a distinct advantage with the old format was that scanning through a single thread allowed one to catch up on ~90% of new stories. This was more convenient than continually trying to do a mental "diff" of For Review.

If the Mods permit, this could easily be recovered: when someone puts a new story up for review, they could drop a link to the thread here.

Well since you already clearly know what I'm thinking, I don't really need to reply, do I?

For everyone else, who actually relies on words though: Review Board used to be the best of what was out there. Now it's "Here's some shit I found. 3/5. Tell me if you think its shit too". When Review Board contains an overwhelming majority of two and three star stories, I don't find that better. When it comes to quality vs. quantity, I will always prefer quality.

(not that my opinion matters, which I'm sure will be "explained" to me)

That's the point of a review isn't it? To decide whether something is shit or not?

By putting it on the review board, not only is it given more attention but it also provides deeper analysis (or however deep someone can analyse a fanfiction.) Someone might feel it's 4/5, someone might feel it's 2/5. At the end of the day it'll be placed in either the trash bin, recycle, or the library.

Or, like the overwhelming majority of what has been posted there since the change, it will wind up right back here when it ends up in the recycle or trash bins where no one goes.

Personally the only reason I even replied to that thread was because I saw someone give it a 4/5 and was genuinely afraid that story might worm its way into the library based simply on the fact that it wasn't entirely awful (which it was).

The review board is more active now, but I think more fics were being submitted to this thread before overall. Perhaps that's on the people for not posting here now, but I miss it all the same.

---------- Post automerged at 10:46 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:27 AM ----------

Board is not letting me edit my post or quote anyone (text all disappears), but I just want to add that how many stories have actually made it into the library based off the new rules? As far as I can tell, none.

If you want to change that and get more stories in then drop the requirements to 3/5 and let's go, but as it stands I don't really see what the point of the changes are. In this thread if I hated a story I just let the people who liked it talk about it and avoided the discussion, but now I feel compelled to go take a shit on the thread so that it doesn't sully the library. I don't see what good that brings really.

I haven't even clicked on most of the threads because they're all rated 2/5 anyway.

In an effort to prevent this thread becoming completely about itself here is a fic that isn't very good jet I still read all the way through:

The Wizard of Harrenhal by DisobedienceWriter. HP/ASOIAF cross that features a super!Harry.

The selling point of this fic is a depowered Harry who instead of accepting the new status quo decides to roflstomp the entire continent of Westeros to gain back his power and go home.

The bad is everything else. The technical writing is so so, Harry is ooc, the magic system isn't that of HP, Harry becomes a seer just so he can predict GoT cannon and so on.

Somehow it was still satisfactory to read through it. I would guess it's catharsis from someone getting an upper hand on all the bastards that inhabit the GoT verse.

Honestly, I enjoyed the omake at the end more than the actual story because it seemed more like something Harry would do. He gained a bit of knowledge which could save someone and actually saved them instead of twiddling his thumbs and watching it all fall apart.

It was rec'd in the ASOIAF fanfiction thread already, iirc.

The story in itself is awful, though.
