Hey, I just had an idea while reading a story. It had the prophecy written out and I was wondering if anyone has written a Dumbles as the Dark Lord story.
I mean think about it.

The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches - self explanatory.
born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies - Lily & James could have defied Dumbles a few times and Harry was born in July.
and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have the power the Dark Lord knows not -
Dumbles could mark Harry as his equal in the Order, maybe as the next leader and the power is open for discussion.
and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives - could be Harry not being free while Dumbledore still controls him. (We all love a manipulative!Dumbldore fic, don't we? )

That would be ridiculously hard to explain.

Maybe Tom went back in time after a heart change and became Dumbledore?

 

Err... why would you base a story like this on a prophecy that Dumbledore himself told? If he's really a dark lord, why would he 1) receive a prophecy that says "HP - TMR" 2) reveal this prophecy to his supposedly mortal enemy?

In short, for this to work the Prophecy would have to be completely fake... which kinda defeats the purpose of Dumbledore being the lord from the prophecy.

 

But we all know that prophecies are open to interpretation. The names on the prophecy in the DoM weren't certain. It even had a question mark next to HP.
And we have all read stories where the term 'Dark Lord' doesn't necessarily mean evil and manipulative/evil Dumbledore has been pulled off before.
Besides, Dumbles ain't perfect - he could have got it wrong when he heard it.
Thinking it over, it doesn't sound as good as it did (it was like 1am when i thought it up) but it could be done, if it was a good writer who did it.

 

Ha, maybe Harry is the same person as Tom and Dumbledore.

Now THAT would be cool.

Harry is Harry, then after one too many deaths, he goes Evil and goes back in time to start over. Becomes Tom.

LAter on, he gets a heart change, and goes back in time to stop himself from becoming Tom, ends up going too far and becomes Dumbledore.

He doesn't knwo he is Tom when he goes back the first time, but figures it out. When he goes back in time the second time, he figures out he is Dumbledore. That is why Dumbledore doesn;t really interfere or train Harry. Both will go back in time at some point and leave the world. Prophecy is just bullshit way for Dumbledore to explain everything.

What I'm wondering is, if the prophecy is truly about Dumbledore, then why would Dumbledore tell it to Harry at all? And why would Voldemort try to steal it from DOM, if it's not about him?

 

I think he means IP that everyone thinks it is between Voldemort and Harry. Including Dumbledore and Voldemort, but in reality it is between Harry and Dumbledore. The only way I could see this being done is that Harry doesn't know it is Dumbledore he is fighting before he kills him. Kind of like Oedipus unknowingly killing his father.

On a completely unrelated note, has anyone spell checked with the names Voldemort and Dumbledore with Firefox? If you do you will see it wants to change Voldemort to Demoralizer and Dumbledore to Tumbledown. Don't they sound like Wrestling moves to you?

Announcer: We are back from our break and the two titans of spandex, Dumbledore and Voldemort, have exploded into gladiatorial combat once more. This no ordinary rivalry between competitors my friends, it became personal a few months back when The Bled of Dore made some lewd comments about The Mort's mother during some Post Game Trash Talking and now they are having it out in the Arena.

And oh my! Dumbledore has the chair and has hit Voldemort over the head with it. Voldemort is down! But Dumbledore isn't finished, he is going for the ropes, is he? He is! He is doing his famous Tumbledown Attack! But Voldemort gets up in time and gets Dumbledore with a Demolarizer, and another, and ANOTHER! Oh man folks I am demoralized just watching!

And Dumbledore is down for the count, will he get up in time? 8... 9... 10... No he doesn't! Unbelievable! What an upset! Voldemort has beaten dumbledore in record time!

 

So what you're saying is... Dumbledore is the dark lord and he's not even aware of it, and Voldemort is just another guy who thinks he's the dark lord? ... meh, if you can pull this off, go for it I guess...

 

I am nowhere near good enough to write anything like this, and Necrule got it right. Dumbles would be the dark lord (need for control - not all tyrants have been "torture them til they're loyal", using people, not caring for their safety outside of usefulness) but would be "doing it for the greater good".
Like a fallen angel kind of thing. The lightest of souls falling into darkness.
Harry may know Dumbles as a dark lord but it'd be really hard to get support for any kind of war against him. Could be a good political story if its done right.

Anyways, anyone who wants to try it can have a go.

Since we don't know Dumbledore's exact birth date then you could say...

Dumbledore could be the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord and his parents defied some Slytherin guy three times. It doesn't necessarily say that his parents defied the Dark Lord three times, just 'him.' Then Harry could be the 'other' so he would have to pick either Voldemort or Dumbledore to kill. And 'the power he knows not' could be Harry, because Dumbledore has control over him at the beginning and Voldemort does not.

It's dumb, but whatever... if you want to play with the prophecy then it's an idea you could try.

Wow. That is original. I wish someone would write that.

Problem is, you have Harry cast off as some unimportant fragment. Then you have the problem of "marking" Dumbledore. Maybe his failure to stop Tom from growing into a Dark Lord makes Dumbledore marked in guilt.
