I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but FF.net has gotten new ads. Just now, I tried to advance to the next chapter of the story I was reading when lo and behold, from my screen stared a full page ad proclaiming the wonders of a certain brand of makeup.

Now the banner ads at FF.net are nothing; I barely notice them half the time. But there was no denying this full page ad. Since I don't don't know, I ask the members of DLP: is the cost bandwith so high that FF.net has to resort to fullpage ads, or do they just want to make a little extra?

well this is kind of pointless, i mean like you said, who gives a shit about the ads. but they probably just want to make more money.

I know it's not extremely exciting news, but since most stories posted on this site are on FF.net, I thought it was appropriate.

Dont' know anything about the money or what not, but thought I might tell you, if you didn't already know, there is an ad-blocker on the site.

Mate, that's kind of old, the Author's on the site get that almost everytime they check their stats or post a new chapter.

I have a cookie set to 30 years that stops the ads showing at all...

If you don't mind me asking (more like begging) How did you set your cookie?

    Okay, here goes.

For the duration of this little tutorial thingy we will be using Firefox with the Add N Edit Cookies extension.

I'm going go off topic a little here but it's in the hopes of helping people out. If you are using Firefox 2.0 this extension is not compatible with it. There is a way to sort this problem out though. Here's how:

Note: This process can work with other Firefox extensions. Please be aware, however, that it won't work with all extensions. Use this process at your own risk... and don't blame me if it goes arse upwards, makes your PC do a backflip, or Sreebags you for your trouble.
    1. Download the plugin by right clicking the 'Install Now' link and choosing 'Save Link As'.
    2. Open up a Windows Explorer Window('My Documents' for example) and go to Tools->Folder Options. Click the View Tab. Unpick 'Hide Extensions for known file types'.
    3. Locate the extension file (in this case 'add_n_edit_cookies-0.2.1.0-fx+mz.xpi') and change the extension’s file type from .xpi to .zip.
    4. Extract the zip file and look for something along the lines of “install.rdf” or “setup.rdf” ('Install.rdf in this case). Open this file in a text editor.
    5. Look for the line/s starting with <em:maxVersion>. Once you find it, change the number next to it to 2.0 (There are two separate lines in this one).
    6. Save the file, and re-zip the previously extracted files.
    7. Change the extension of the file from .zip back to .xpi.
    8. Once you've renamed the file to xpi, open up Firefox, open Tools > Add-ons, and and drag the xpi file you just created to the add-ons browser.
    9. Restart Firefox.
As I said in my note - this can work with other extensions.

    Now, back on topic...

To change the cookie expiration date:
    1. Go to ff.net, choose 'Ad Blocker' from the drop down menu and follow the link on the page that loads.
    2. Click on Tools > Cookie Editor.
    3. In the text box at the top type 'Fanfiction.Net' and hit the Filter/Refresh button.
    4. There may be more than one cookie listed, find the one that has 'Adblocker' listed as the cookie name. Double-click it (or single-click it and hit the Edit button).
    5. In the pop-up screen locate and click the check box for 'New expiration date'.
    6. Change the expiration date to whatever the hell you like.
    The end.
