I think you might be suffering from the same thing most of DLP suffers from when reading fanfiction. Take a look at the library at some of the old stuff. Frankly, if it were put up today for review, it'd get hammered. Taste and sophistication grow as we get older, and I think that's happened here. Moreover, as the movie industry gets older, storylines, dialogue, etc. also become more sophisticated and grow.

If you're comparing movies, compare star wars to the late 70s sci-fi space movies, not to movies in the last few years.

    And as for critically acclaimed.

And remember, Star Wars was up against:

Close Encounters of the Third Kind
    Airport '77
Annie Hall (Woody Allen at the height of his heyday)
Hell, Vanessa Redgrave won best actress in supporting role for Julia (which stared Jane Fonda)

I'd have to say that in the day, it was pretty well critically acclaimed. Only when looking back at it through years of maturation both personally, and corporately as movie connoisseurs, do we now think it was not good.

In other words, it was great in the day, but for some, it didn't age well. Again, just like fanfiction in our own library.

I can't think of any science fiction films since the original Star Wars trilogy that tell such a grand and epic tale. In fact, the Lord of the Rings trilogy is the only thing to have perhaps surpassed Star Wars in terms of grand storytelling.

For the same reason I have gained more enjoyment from reading The Iliad than I have from many excellently written modern novels, Star Wars is superior to many technically 'better' sci-fi films. It's an archetypal heroic saga with a deep mythology, and that means it appeals to us on levels that most films never can, no matter how many modern techniques they employ.

I'll just say that I'm rather excited for Force Awakens. As much as can be judged by the trailers, JJ gave it his best and he can put together a solid sci-fi flick.

Disclaimer: have not seen the original trilogy.

Have you read the Thrawn trilogy? Or the New Jedi Order? Maybe Outbound flight and its sequel?

I'm not familiar with EU. I was confusing Natalie Portman and Carrie Fischer for a good few years until I saw Episode III.

Because it's a Force Awakens thread and I'm looking forward to it? o_O Is having seen the originals obligatory to be allowed to do it?

I'm not trying to convince someone to not watch what is shaping to be an awesome movie because he didn't watch some other movies related to it.

It's not like the new series of movies will necessitate having watched the originals. It will help (and give massive feels) but you know that the execs will have made sure that they can draw new people.

Looking forward to seeing this but still want the twins and Anakin Solo in these films. Han Solo will be suitably awesome and more than likely steal the show (Ford has that kind of star factor that he's a scene stealer).

I really want to see what sort of Jedi Luke has become, how his philosophy compares with the Jedi Order of the prequels, and also what form the Sith will take now that the whole Master-Apprentice chain has been broken.

Judging by the trailers, it looks interesting (although the light saber looks weird and I hope, that the ball-droid ain't some new pain in the ass like Jar Jar).
