Yeah I know, a lot of the shit in it now is cliched, but it was fairly original at the time it started. It's probably the only independent!Harry fic I enjoy because the author actually sticks to his guns and keeps Harry independent without making him some whiny brat who just bitches about how everyone just wants to use him.
And even though it's Harry/Ginny the romance is so totally in the background that it's easy to ignore entirely. There's no soulmate shit, no bonding, no love at first sight, in fact there's no love there at all. It's just two teenagers dating. A nice change from all those fics out there that have Harry immediately joined at the hip with whoever the author pairs him with.

A lot of the fanfiction I've loved in the past I hate today. In fact, my favorite stories list that used to be packed with Harry Potter stories now only has about ten or so. PoT hasn't always been my favorite, but it's the only one that's endured the test of time(pun not intended). A classic, in my opinion, even though I know a lot of people who would beg to differ;)

Ah, and I suppose Dakaath: Prince of Darkness should get an honorable mention as well. I loved that fic to death and it would've easily made favorite had LT2000 not abandoned it. I can understand his reasons completely, but it still makes me sad:(

I've no idea what my favourite of all time is, and I have different ones for different genres, so I'll list a few I enjoyed.

Browncoat, Green Eyes by nonjon - already been said.

Flying Without a Broom by Ruskbyte - quite possibly the best stoned!Harry fic of all time :D.

The Hero Trilogy by joe6991 - Best super!Harry fic ever, that's for certain, even if it is H/G.

That's all I can be bothered to think of right now. I may edit in a couple more later.

You guys will hate me for this. Honestly, it is one of my favorites that is not and probably won't ever be mentioned on this site. For one reason it is Harry/Ginny, another reason it has them as soul mates. But even using those ridiculous and retarded cliche, it gives it a completely new angle and it something pretty damn unique. It fits canon perfectly while showing new powers, experiences, and adventures from Ginny's perspective until sixth-year where it becomes it's own fic. I'd give it a chance even if you don't want to admit you did.

The first one (Summer of the Serpent) I didn't like, but the rest were I enjoyed.

Hard choice. Bloody hard. I hunted my bookmarks and found these contenders for #1:

From the Abyss by Ruskbyte (Anybody who'd read this should agree with me.)

Harry Potter and the Defiance of the Hero : Book 2 in The Hero Trilogy by Jon6991 (It's H/G. Nobody cares.)

The Persistence of Memory by Neutral (Hey, I liked this better than the AU Of Western Stars fics, but they're good too. But this one got me into the psychological fanfics.)

The Awakening Power by Sib (H/G again. Remnants of my shameful past as a H/G affectionado.)

The Shadows of Silence by Myth and Legend (Book 6 AU.)

Eternity Lost by Myth and Legend (Book 7 AU. Slander these not in my presence. Good writing, and I remember correctly. Bloody good writing.)

Cursed by Myth and Legend (God. I sound like a fanboy. M&L == H/G *Phoenixsong.net. What else do you expect?*. Read at your own risk. Not too much of twoo <3 though.) All these I read at phoenixsong.

Here Be Monsters 1: Wizard's Lament by Dzeytoun

Getting Out Or Dying Trying by C. Night (This fic got me out of H/G. Best Harry/Fem!Blaise. Ever.)

Elemental Genesis by Raven Dragonclaw (I liked it then. So sue me.)

Holding Court by Marshes To Banks (Why do I put these unusual fics up for #1? Coz nobody else is mentioning them. More popular fics of good quality are getting most of the attention.)

Freedom And Not Peace by Lightning on the Wave (Part 4 of the Sacrifices Arc. Slash, yes. Harry/Draco, yes. And also one of the best series in ff that I've read, at least upto Book 5: Wind That Shakes The Seas And Stars. I hate some of the characters. I hate some of the plot. I bow before the writing.)

A Surreal Tale by E. M. Pink (Best Bellatrix-Adopts-Harry out there. Probably the first. And the only, for all I know... no, there is that Veritaserum Challenge fic...)

Reign of Power by Fayr Warning (It degenerates further and further, and probably will end up ass-fucked like Scabbed Wings, but that was a H/G anyway.)

Now that I look back, all of these seemed The Best when I was reading them. Along with some of the fics already mentioned here. Right now though, only M&L's fics and Defiance are serious contenders. My vote is to Eternity Lost. (Hey, if you nominate a H/G anyway...)

Holding Court - One of the best OC I've ever read. Very interesting universe. Thanks, Mortis.

Dakaath was probably the best story i have ever read. Even though it's unfinished it's still brilliant.
The denarian renegade is another brilliant fic and the summer of change is another good read.

"After the End" -- The story that got me into fanfiction.

Yeah it's H/G and the plotting is methodical (although it's more a character study than a page turner, anyway), but the premise was engaging, the plot never stalled, the dialogue and characterizations were excellent, and the characters all had arcs--it wasn't "Harry Potter doing a bunch of stuff and some other people along for the ride".

And as far as production value goes (spelling and grammar), I've rarely seen it's equal in fanfiction.

    Edit:

Thats the same story that got me into fanfiction. Hard pressed to find an equal due the characteristics stated above.

I don't think I have ever ever read (after the end) I'll have to check it out, hopefully I can stomach the H/G romance crap. You know H/G would not be so bad if it didn't involve everyone becoming God like usually. I just like it when Harry is Godlike.Or at least has better skills and stuff...For some reason all those fluffy writers kind of try to make everyone have equal if not better skills then Harry..Pisses me off..and those tend to be H/G stories.

I second Queens of Darkness, Ladies of Light. Given that I like my fics action-packed, there's no equal to this one when it comes to action scenes. I generally have a preference for magical duels that involve only wand magic and nothing else. No overpowered!Harry, wandless magic, elementalist skills, weapons or some other nonsense.

But despite this, I am really hard-pressed trying to find another fic that has battle scenes nearing the quality of those in this one. You can easily envision the whole battle in your mind, what with the great detail in which they were written. It's comparable to watching a movie. And even disregarding the fight scenes, there is never a boring moment in those two chapters I've read. If there ever was a single fic on hiatus that I would absolutely love to see resumed, it would be this.

Apart from that, I would pick the Elemental Genesis series if I had to choose a longer fic. This fic strays so far from the HP series in terms of magic and characters that it is almost a separate series all on its own. It has hands down some of the best OCs I've read, and is the only fic involving higher powers (there are gods and goddesses, mostly modelled after the Greek ones) that I can tolerate. The writing is simply amazing, I couldn't help but bow down before it. Especially so when I realized the author was only 15-16 years old when she wrote it.

I've named these two fics mainly because they involve themes or plot devices that I usually shun, but are so good that it was impossible for me to stop reading. As for the more mainstream ones, or those with themes that fit into my likings, I'd have to think more about it.

I do sometimes feel a tinge of regret when I hear you guys talk about great fics like Lightning-on-the-Wave's works and After The End. I find that I am so prejudiced against slash and H/G that I am simply unable to stomach any fic that features such pairings. What a pity, I say.

I just read the Hero Trilogy and I'm pretty sure that is the best story I've ever read. That story makes you think for sure.

The same thing happened to me, I can't even read a sentence of a fic if it has H/G in it. Sometimes I feel like I should be upset since there seem to be some genuinely good H/G fics out there, but then I consider all the crap I didn't read by being anti H/G and I feel better about myself.

Now that's a surprising suggestion. It was one of my favorites years ago, but after having read so much, it doesn't stand out much for me. Still, it's fun to see an oldie dug up.

I'll admit I only got about ten chapters into "After the End." Couldn't stand it at all. So much excruciating detail on so many characters I don't care about, and so much trite angst. I remember Harry wasn't even remotely special but, if memory serves, the Dark Lord was defeated by a spell Hermione made and 4 or 5 people cast together (including Harry). It was a chore to read and at one point I caught on to the fact that I didn't like anyone in the fic. Not a single character. Stopped it then, in spite of the fact that it was clearly written and edited with a lot of care and effort. Certainly has 'production value' on the level of so many early classics (like Barb's trilogy, Lori's Paradigm, or Cassie's borrowed Draco wankfests), but I doubt I could force myself to read any of those either.

This is why there won't ever be a "No. 1" story for many people. There are stories we enjoy the most, in spite of their flaws while others may be technically flawless they just feature a plot, story, pairing that makes them less tempting than brushing teeth with diarrhea. I can completely see how someone would call After the End the number one story. And yet, I'd still rather stick a hot steaming log in my mouth than read it.

Another fic that's not gotten a mention but was one of the most entertaining I've read in a long while was DobbyElfLord's Altered Destinies.

Joe6991's Hero Trilogy might be up there too, but I don't think it's done just yet (and the level of Super-ness in the Super-Harry was getting to be a bit much when I last looked at it). That and you can't compare a WIP to a finished fic.
