Well, apart from the fact that she was 14 (according to the news article, not sure how legit) and couldn't drive a car to go across state lines...

...it's possible she was a hell of a lot more worried about her parents finding out she was pregnant than anything else.

And if they had known, it's possible that they would have not allowed an abortion if they could prevent one. Depends on where she was. But the 'perfect solution' in her mind might well have been that no one ever found out.

I knew a girl in High School who had her baby in the bathroom at a Huddle House (restaurant). Apparently the baby dropped into the toilet a few months premature and she left it there, later claiming she didn't know she had been pregnant at all. I'm sure and many other girls would rather have the problem 'disappear' than let their parents know.

Not condoning her actions by any means, but your statement just... felt so out of touch. Or maybe I'm the one out of touch. Hell if I know.

 

Aside from the fact that just getting access to abortion clinics in some states is made to be as inconvenient and difficult as possible, even for adult women. There is also the problem that a lot of states that require you to have a parents permission (not just notification) to have an abortion, especially if you are under 16/18. And even if you manage to get that in plenty of counties you can get sent to 'crisis pregnancy centers.' which are basically pro-life places that are notorious for using false information and scare tactics to persuade women out of having abortions. And any such centers/ clinics / planned parenthood in a small town is often picketed, so everyone would know you had walked out of there.

So yeah when you add all of that up it is actually really damn easy to see why a scared 14 year old child of conservative parents in a Southen state would rather have her baby in a bathroom by herself than go through all the humiliation and loops requred to remove the fetus in a safe and humane manner.
