    Sounds promising.

I just watched ep 3, but I have mixed feelings about it.

Chief among them being how they could possibly survive as a 'colony' or whatever if they're adamant that killing the pirates that rob, rape, pillage and murder their people is wrong. I was really hoping Ledo would say something like 'I apologize for killing those pirates... and saving your peoples' lives' but that's not really in character.

Also, where do they get the chickens? Or gunpowder?! lol, odd nitpick, to be sure.

Was actually having a discussion with some people about this today. There's very few humans left on Earth, so it might not be farfetched that a culture has been adopted that shies away from killing - even when they're enemies. In the initial attack, pirates didn't seem to kill many - just hijack the ship.

So didn't really find it surprising that they reacted so negatively to Ludo just clinically and ruthlessly wiping them all out with his first attack. No chance to demand surrender or anything (which for him isn't all that surprising - he is a human weapon designed to kill those aliens, where you can't afford to hesitate).

Though really, they should have blamed Amy for requesting help from a complete outsider who had no idea about their ways.

Still, absolutely loving Suisei no Gargantia. Haven't seen an anime like this for a very long time.

You say that, but i still call his time with the earthlings changing him for the 'better' while more and more enemies seek to take advantage of their pacifism.

His people will probably eventually find him too and bring the aliens with them, or the corpse that he came through brings the aliens to earth.
I've always had no time for rapists, less so than murderers. While I also don't recall much killing on screen, there was definitely the former being insinuated quite heavily before they were vaporised.

If I'm wrong, and I hope I am, then it will definitely become one of my fav animes, otherwise, meh. Standard mech/shonen-y stuff.
I dunno how I went from gushing to this is one episode, lol...

Man, I really dislike it when a rom-com anime slowly becomes some kind of romantic drama. I'm on episode 20 of Sakurasou now, and I have to say that I enjoyed the earlier episodes more. It's not bad, but the romantic drama is really far less entertaining than the early comedy - though it hasn't switched completely.

Anyone got a similar anime that, whilst having a proper romance, commits to the comedy and stays away from melodrama throughout? Or even just an anime that is a bit more subtle with it's dramatic scenes if it does follow that route?

Anyone else watching Attack on Titan? The protagonist is really starting to grate on me, but the setting and promise and premise are still keeping me hooked. I'm hoping we'll see more character development after some time-skippery.

I'm watching it, too. So far I've really been enjoying it, but part of it for me is this contextual thing where I know (from hearing about the manga) that this show isn't going to fuck around. I expect a lot of the characters that just got introduced (most of them even?) are probably going to die horribly.

So its Fafner in the Azure all over again. Goodbye happy feelings; time to invest in Kleenex again.

Yeah I'm pretty sure something terrible happens literally every other episode in.

I actually found Attack on Titan really hard to get into, but as others have said the promise is what's keeping me around.

The first episode was especially off putting. Mostly because I realized it was like 70% vaguely animated stills. I'm guessing that was to save on animation costs so they can render the fights better but yeah. Not a fan of the first episode.

I've also been following Maou-sama. Love it, dorky and kind of dumb but whatever. Totally enjoyable.

My excitement about Suisei no Gargantia was greatly diminished by episode 3, which reverted almost immediately into the standard shonen formula.

It was like ticking a fucking checklist.

    • Main heroine shrilly calls protagonist an idiot and runs away in tears? Check. (I fucking hate when this kind of thing happens. That moment would have been far more poignant had all the spectators stood there silently, horrified by what they had just witnessed.)
    • Long deluge about morals? Check.
    • Scantily clad female antagonist with huge tits is comically evil? Check.
    • Boring fight scene in which no one can hold a candle to the protagonist's power? Check. (I was so hoping this series would be above this. The two civilizations are so technologically imbalanced, fight scenes celebrating the protagonist's battle capability serve little purpose other than to give secondary characters and villains an opportunity to exclaim the cliche "So this is the power of _____!" line.)
    • Absolutely zero character development? Check.
    • Cheesy background music to mimick the mood? Motherfucking Check.

Here's hoping the show doesn't continue to adhere to these godawful shonen trends.

Just use a thumbs up then, rather than quoting a whole block for just that.

In any case, does anybody know some dimension traveling type animes? After watching Hataraku Maou-Sama, I'm craving for that kind of genre.

To be more specific, it'd be something along the lines of Kyo Kara Maoh, or Familiar of Zero.

Ones like Steins Gate is fine too, though I think I'm looking for something slightly more light hearted.

All three follow a general 'dimensional displacement' theme. The first two are more lighthearted than the third. They strike a balance between fantasy/adventure and romantic comedy. Escaflowne, however, is a somewhat more serious fantasy drama.

Escaflowne > All. Best of the group recommended.

I only ever saw the Escaflowne movie, which put me off trying the series. This was a LONG time ago (maybe 2004?) and was one of the first anime I downloaded. But maybe I should give the series a go.

If that's what you're interested in, definitely check Twelve Kingdoms too. Though like Escaflowne, a serious fantasy rather than anything light-hearted.

If you're fine with a show that is pretty much light hearted all the way through you could try out Dog Days. Both seasons are pretty entertaining, even though the second season doesn't have much of plot to it. It looks like they're setting up the third season to have a plot again though.

Has anyone here watched Robotics;Notes? I want to know if it's worth a watch. I recently watched Kara no Kyoukai, so I'm looking for a complete contrast; anime which are mostly comedic with romantic elements. Any other recs would be appreciated.

Heading into it soon, watch Chaos;Head and Steins;Gate first. They're all by the same people, occur in the same universe, and seem to reference each other a bit. Both are good, Steins;Gate being the best by far. It starts lighthearted and fun, then gets pretty fucking dark.

As for Chaos;Head... You know that really awkward moment where you have to stop and facepalm, wincing as it goes on? That's the first five episodes. And then it gets weird.

Tsubasa Chronicle has been good so far, but I wouldn't call it really lighthearted.

Ranma 1/2 fits what you're looking for pretty well if you haven't seen it, though the anime never got an actual ending.

Familiar of Zero is another one that fits the bill, though between the two seasons I've watched, I haven't seen any actual character development.

Outside of that, I highly recommend Dusk Maiden of Amnesia to anyone that likes supernatural stuff. It starts out lighthearted, moves onto dark and pretty fucked up, and has one of the greatest endings I've seen recently. It's a quick watch with only 13 episodes, but I'm hoping it gets picked up for another season.
