On the subject of boxing anime, I'd like to throw out a recommendation for Ashita no Joe.

Sometime last year, I went on a boxing anime binge, and ended up plowing through the entirety of this masterpiece in around a month, along with its sequel Ashita no Joe 2.

It's old - the first season aired from 1970 to 1971, and it shows. The art, animation, and voice acting are all rather dated. That said, I think it's one of the best anime I've ever seen.

The story focuses on Yabuki Joe, a teenage delinquent who is wandering around Japan, and meets Danpei, a down-on-his-luck retired boxer, who has become an alcoholic in his old age. Danpei sees potential in Joe, and decides to train him to be a boxer.

It follows Joe's career, from his delinquency in the early episodes, and through his eventual debut in the ring, and his development of his famous cross-counter (which has been referenced in a ton of anime.

That said, it takes something like 15-20 episodes for a boxing match to actually take place. In fact, throughout the anime, the boxing itself, while completely necessary to the show, often takes a backseat to the human interactions.

The show, despite being rather basic when compared with some more modern anime, dealt with some pretty dark themes. From punch-drunk syndrome, to the serious issues boxer's face in regards to weight loss...

Overall, I'd say it's a solid 10/10. If you're interested in checking out an older anime, it's definitely worth it.

Really struggling with the dated animation in Turn A Gundam but I've been told it's a really good series. Is it worth sticking with or does anyone have any more modern mecha anime I could watch?

For context I've watched and enjoyed: Gundam Seed (not Destiny though), Evangelion, Full Metal Panic (and both spin off series), Gundam 00 and Knights of Sidonia.

Not enjoyed so much: Gundam Seed Destiny, RahXephon (well it was okay but seemed like an Evangelion clone), eureka seven and the Gundam 00 movie.

    Yes.

Mazinger Z Hen, Mazinkaiser SKL, Shin Getter Robo v. Neo Getter Robo, Goddanar, and Gear Fighter Dendoh.

Oh, you don't want to watch super robot stuff. Or good things that look different than what you are used to. You might enjoy Code Geass, which is something people gave a shit about a few years ago. It's kind of a more colorful version of those times in Death Note where Light would be all super calculating and dramatic, but with robots. And enough Japanese nationalism you could choke on it.

You might want to try Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, which is a super robot show but was digitally animated. If you like that, go watch some of the super robot stuff I mentioned earlier -- except Goddanar, unless you're fine with a shit ton of fan service.

It basically was. It was enough of its own thing though that it warranted an okay movie from what I remember.

Anyone found a subbed version of Psycho Pass: The Movie, can't see anything. Only found out about it's existence as of twenty minutes ago.

Dunno if 'I Can't Understand what my Husband is Saying' has been recced before, but I adore it.

Basically follows the life of an odd newlywed couple, an OL and an Otaku. It's super adorable and pretty funny. Less than 5 minute snippet episode format.

Gundam Wing - It was made in 1995, so it's actually older than Turn A Gundam. But the art style and character design seems a bit newer to me - closer to Gundam SEED. It remains my favourite Gundam and one my favourite mecha anime ever. Great characters, good themes, fantastic atmosphere due in no small part to a great OST and a great blend of politics/action. That being said, I seem to struggle to get anyone newer to anime scene to watch this.

Macross Zero - is an OVA series with absolutely spectacular animation and fights, a passable storyline (it's only 5 episodes afterall) and a more serious atmosphere to most Macross I've come across. It's one of those OVA series that wow you as you watch it, then you forget it about it after.

Code Geass - a bit of a change from the other ones mentioned, but one of those anime I highly recommend to people. It's not set in space (the mecha basically use rollerblades) and has less of a space-opera feel that many of the Gundams have. It's one of those big name anime that everyone expects you to see, and for once I don't think that's overrated. The story is about a high school student (who happens to be an exiled Prince) secretly running a revolution against the biggest empire on the planet using his genius tactics and charisma.

First season was fantastic, if a bit slow at the start. Second season was fun and action-packed, but had lots of retarded things too which brought it down.

From what I've read, movie blu-rays are set to be released July 15th. Until then, I doubt you'll see any fansubs.

Yeah, for a 5 minute episode series, it's really fun. Love the interaction between the two.

Season 1 went really weird at the end though. It was like they ran out of budget, or their lead animator fell sick - the animation quality suddenly dropped.

I am watching this. My reaction alternates between "WTF" and "LOL", sometimes a combination of the two.

I started watching 'Is it wrong to pick up girls in a dungeon'. I'm genuinely laughing a fair bit and find it mostly enjoyable, but I can see myself getting really fucking annoyed by the harem angle. Again.

I've got no one to blame but myself.

Kuroko no Basuke is hitting the final few episodes and it's ridiculously good, for some reason all the Sports Anime's have been great lately.

Has anyone been watching Kekkai Sensen? It's one of the best I've seen in a long time. Definitely a candidate for anime of the year, I think. I've been enjoying it more than pretty much anything else I'm watching right now.

Basically, it's about this guy named Leonardo Watch, who possesses the all-seeing "Eyes of God", and his adventures in Hellsalems Lot (a.k.a. New York with a portal to the netherworld cutting it off from the rest of the world, and, as such, is now filled with monsters and demons and the like).

It has a strong cast of characters, and some pretty decent action. It's a bit wacky and over-the-top at times, however it's wacky and over-the-top in the style of Cowboy Bebop, so it comes across as cool.

It's gained major points in my book by having an amazing soundtrack, as well (something else it has in common with Cowboy Bebop).

There are nine episodes so far (with only three more left), and I've been having a blast with it. Funimation's dub is around three episodes in, and it's actually half decent, so it's worth checking out if you don't like subs.

I guess what I'm saying is... go watch it. Go Leonardo watch it. I cannot recommend it enough.

I've watched the first five episodes of Food Wars. It's about a teen who has aspirations of becoming a better cook than hours father and taking over the family diner.

His father is seemingly some genius prodigy, but the kid isn't too far off. The father sends the kid to Japan's (the world's?) number one culinary high school to get that 'edge' he'll need to be great.

It's a hilariously stupid comedy. Some of the funnier scenes have his cooking eliciting sexual reactions from the people trying his dishes.

Throw in a bit of classist (?) humour (everyone looking down on his humble origins and him not giving two fucks), general sex humour (peanut butter squid LOL) and a genuinely likeable and badass protagonist and all I can say is that I highly recommend this show.

Oh. Don't watch if you're hungry...

Oh my god yes. This show is amazeballs. The best part about it is the lovecraftian monsters just living everyday human life.

Also, it truly rings of Bebop, supplemented with a level of weirdness that almost tops FLCL. Obviously more comedy oriented and not very deep in terms of overarching story, but it just has that feel.

I'm only seven eps in, but I honestly can't recommend it enough. You will be grinning like a fool within the first ten minutes.

We've been talking about the source manga off and on for a while in the manga rec thread. It's a good read, and the anime has been doing a pretty good job of adapting it so far. The manga art is 10x better though.

I can't comment, but it's rare I find that the case for me.

Actually, Juvia looked way cooler in the FT manga now that I think about it...

Watched all available episodes of Food Wars. Proceeded to read the Manga.

Amazing show and manga. Funny, silly at times in a good way, good protagonist and just the right dose of wtf. Supporting cast is very good so far, excluding the hot-shot girl, Erina or whatever the fuck her name is.

Just did a quick search of the manga art. It looks less ecchi, which is good or bad depending on what mood I'm in huehue.

I don't mind Erina as a foil/ antagonist. It'll make it all the sweeter when she falls for him only for him to fall for Nikumi (a.k.a Japan's idea of an American chick? o_O lol).

    /me nods

    Nikumi best girl.

Edit: I wouldn't call it less ecchi. It loses because of lack of color and animation, but the food tasting doesn't get any less hilarious and/or perverted.

Friend recommended Owari no Seraph, given that I'm still fairly new to Anime to an extent I'm trying out everything at the moment and this one's kinda cliched Vampires vs Humans but it's actually really fun to watch.

    Shinoa is the best <3

At some point, with Shokugeki, I just got kind of bored. It didn't feel like much was happening anymore.

Might pick it up again since I'm watching the anime at the moment, but I'm not too sure. Is there good progression happening?

I'd say yes. Soma is ambitious and progresses quickly. Events are happening at a decent rate, as well. There isn't any filler that I could see.
