To tell you the truth i only read half the book and just put it away. It was...boring to say the least. a boy finds something mystical gets carried away into a magical advanture with dragons and acient evil. screems lord of the rings to me.

Realms of the Elves: The Last Mythal: Forsaken House.

an excellent book about the elves and about the magic it self.

 

If you like humor try discworld they are all funny
Also the Mayfair Trilogy by Anne Rice is good it starts with The Witching Hour

 

Um, Somebody has already suggested Hyperion and Fall of Hyperion, so I guess I will also say Endymion and The Rise of Endymion even though I haven't read them yet. I have just started reading Endymion, but my friends tell me its great.

Another absolutely amazing series is the Death Gate Cycle, by Margaret Weis and Tray Hickman. Its a series of seven books and Its been occupying a good chunk of my past time when not reading Dan Simmons' books. Hope you enjoy them. By the way, for a less complex read, the Death gate cycle is the way to go. However, by no means is it a simple series, its just a lot less openly philosophical seeming.

 

Two Books that I Highly Reccomend to anyone

As many of you may or may not recall, I am an atheist. As such, I have started to buy books that are in-line with my beliefs (or lack thereof), which has gotten me the ire of the rest of my family, thought not really my dad (thankfully). Anywho, the two books that I would like to recommend are "Letter to a Christian Nation" and "The God Delusion". They bring up very, very good points on the side of atheism, and the only way you can dispute them is to make up bullshit facts and such. Seriously, no matter what religion you are (or aren't), at least give the books a check out from your library. You owe it to yourself to do so.

Probably some others, but I can't think of any more that havn't been mentioned in previous posts.

 

His Dark Materials is a very good book!

 

The Winter of the World trilogy by Michael Scott Rohan was good enough. Has some interesting ideas that could be used as runemagic in fics.

 

Alas, Babylon, which I believe is by Pat Frank.

 

Feist's books are quite good, one of my favorite authors, I have most of his series in Hardcover.

The Deathgate cycle that thrawn mentioned by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman is pretty good as well, but I preferred the Star of the Guardian series that they wrote, and the darksword trilogy was pretty good as well.

The Dark is Rising sequence is a fun read as well, I think it would make an interesting HP crossover

I'd recommend 'The chronicles of Amber' The first five anyway, after that they switched the main character. :S kinda detracted from the story I thought.

 

Best book you've ever read?

So, out of intrest I want to know what everyones favourite book is. However, I would prefer it to be based on the book itself, not fanfiction or fanfiction potential.

So for instance to start off, my favourite book would probably have to be either Ender's Game or The House Of The Scorpian.

Both are brilliant but in the end I think Ender's Game pulls ahead.

So what is the best book you've ever read?

 

Angels and Demons by Dan Brown

 

Hmm... It's a toss up between The Hunt for Red October, Jim Butcher's Dead Beat and Stephen King's The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. I tend to go more for the ambiance of the descriptions in books, rather than a particular genre.

 

For me I would have to say it was 'Shadow of the Wind' by Carlos Ruiz Zafón. I have read several other books which I loved - the Dresden Files for example but that one book just absolutely captivated me. I was literally wandering around the house reading it and doing the other stuff that needed to be done rather than putting it down.

 

I'm tied between Wizards First Rule by:Terry Goodkind or Lone Swords by:R.A Salvatore.

 

It's a toss up between two series for me; The Amber Series by Roger Zelazny and the Fionaver Tapestry by Guy Gavriel Kay. I highly recommend both of these.
