Comic writers to keep an eye on:
Joss Whedon (Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Astonishing X-Men)
    Neil Gaiman (Sandman, Death)
Warren Ellis (Transmetropolitan, Planetary, Global Frequency, Desolation Jones, Ministry of Space)
    Garth Ennis (303, Fury, Preacher)

    Other good comics:
    The Walking Dead
    Y The Last Man
    Fables
    Thieves and Kings
    100 Bullets
    Queen & Country
    Bone
    Sam and Twitch
    Powers
    Supreme Power

I tend to keep away from the traditional super hero faire. Spiderman, X-Men, Avengers, Wolverine etc aren't really to my taste. Most of what I've listed are completed comics; there are only a couple of ongoing series. I like self-contained stories.

All in all, they're stand out comics.

    Yak.
btw. Wikipedia has detailed entries for all of them.

I like few comics, I don't like heroes...

Superman was always just too overpowered to be cool, not to mention way too fucking nice. I guess he's what truly put me off heroes.

My favs are probably: (in no particular order)

    Transmet
    Watchmen
    Sandman
    Hellblazer

Caitiff, your Transmet siggy makes me quite happy by the way.

Transmet and Sandman are accessible to most readers, but Watchmen is not. It can be very heavy going at times - it's a monster.

And Hellblazer is good in chunks, but it recycles the same plot over and over again. It's been happening since the series started. Constantine gets over his severe depression and builds up an interesting and eclectic group of allies/friends/family/romantic interests. And then after numerous story arcs, they all get killed. Constantine, alone once again, and haunted by the ghosts of everyone he's gotten killed, becomes severely depressed. Rinse and repeat.

The man is a curse to everyone he meets. And while that can be quite interesting for short-medium term plots, after 20 years of this cycle, the comic itself is depressing.

And the heavy left-wing stance gets pretty monotonous too.

Two of the stories that really stand out are the demon yuppies who invest in an infernal stockmarket for souls; Constantine manipulates the stock market and causes a spiritual crash. And when Constantine tricks the devil into curing him from cancer. Oh, and tricking the devil into drinking holy water beer! I guess that's three. Heh. :)

Actually, there are a LOT of good stories in Hellblazer. Despite my griping I've still got some love.

    Yak.

I'm a HUGE comic book geek.

Massive Nerd over here (as if my hanging on this site, and my affinity for Harry Potter didn't give it away ;) )

Anyway, my favorite comic is Watchmen (check out my avatar, baby!)

Dave Gibbons and Allan Moore tore shit up in that one.

Also, love Transmetropolitan, NEVER READ SANDMAN OR THE INVISIBLES (much to my shame.)

    Favorite current writers are:
Big fan of Robert Kirkman, specifically his titles "Invincible," and "The Walking Dead." Both ROCK.

Also like Brian K. Vaughn, and his titles "Deus Ex Machina," and "Y the Last Man,"

I'll write more later, but that about covers it for now.

EDIT: Read Yak's post (and showed him some love for it via Rep), and have to add Powers and Fables to the list. Forgot to include them earlier. Will follow some suggestions, and investigate others.

Hey just wondering if any had some good graphic novels to reccomend?

I just got the student loan in so it means I can splash out on necessities such as alcohol, xbox games and comics :D

I like kind of darker stuff anything Frank Miller, Dead@17, I'm like a total Batman and Joker fangirl too.

I'll read anything really if you know anything that is similar to those or just something you thought was awesome, I'd appreciate it.

    Cheers

The Watchman Special edition might be discounted by now, V for vendetta is something I think you might want to read a few pages of before buying, Sandman and Hellblazer should
hit some of those "dark" "frank miller" cylinders.

Let us know what you purchased.

Frank Miller's Sin City and Ronin, though you've probably already read both.

Gaiman's Marvel 1602 is fairly dark and isn't terrible.

Ya, Rex is worth reading. Fairly solid and twisted storyline. Hell, my avatar is from Rex Mundi.

From Hell is amazing, that's a definite buy in my opinion.

Also, gotta agree with Anya on this one. Sandman all day, every day. And Hellblazer is easily one of my all time favorites.

    Judge Dredd: Origins is epic.

I'd also recommend 'alternative' comics such as Jimmy Corrigan, Blankets and Maus.

But I'd far more recommend that you don't spend the money unless you need to, or else you'll regret it when it comes to paying it off.

A voice of reason ;) thankfully it's just a college loan and not a uni one so it's not that much to pay back.

I think I'll definitely be taking a look at 100 bullets and sandman. I'll likely end up buying them all before the end of the year, birthday is coming up and santa is known to deliver some good stuff. :)

Fables, DMZ, Y: The Last Man, and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns are all decent to damn good comics that are worth at least a look.

I second Kingdom Come. Try Arkham Asylum: Serious House on Serious Earth, too. A very... demented Batman story.

    Air is a great comic.

"It was created by writer G. Willow Wilson and artist M. K. Perker. It follows Blythe, an acrophobic flight attendant for the fictional Clearfleet Airlines, who is caught between two forces, the mysterious Etesians and an equally mysterious entity called Zayn."

Well I love it and that's all that really matters.
