Preacher. It opens with a preacher getting possessed by the bastard offspring of a demon and an angel, prompting him to go on a quest to bring God to trial for his crimes against humanity.

Featuring an alcoholic, former junkie Irish vampire, assassins, a conspiracy to bring about the Apocolypse, the spirit of John Wayne, and an Angel of Death modelled on Clint Eastwood in 'Unforgiven'.

Oh yeah, and sex and violence. Lots of it. It's written by Garth Ennis, who did a pretty good run on Hellblazer, amongst other things.

If you haven't purchased every Punisher MAX volume, you're doing it wrong. It's not really a graphic novel, per se, but you can honestly read any one of them by themselves.

Can anyone advise the Ultimate Spider-Man series? I just leafed through a volume or two at train stations and it looks interesting enough but is it worth buying?

I love it, personally. I haven't read the most recent volumes (post Ultimatum, which was astonishingly shit), but it's well worth a read. A smart update of the story.

@Nemrut: read it, and prepare to lament the fact that Brian Michael Bendis had nothing to do with the film series. It's really, really entertaining.

Ultimate Spidey is what got me back into comics. Kinda fell out recently with Ultimatum, but any Ultimate Marvel series is pretty badass. Ultimate Hulk vs Wolverine is just retarded awesome.

I'm sure I read somewhere that Ultimate Spiderman is the inspiration for the reboot, so you might take some comfort in that (although I don't know if Bendis is involved at all...)

Thanks guys, I will be sure to check it out. One more question, is it the same guys who draw the ultimate spider man series or should I be prepared for several different drawing styles. I got an Ultimate Spider-Man issue as a present and in that one New york was flooded previously and a lot of people know Peters identity and it looked nothing like the previous art I had seen.

Are they still the same continuity or different ones?

Y'know, since Iron Man hit the screens (and subsequent Marvel film releases/rumors), I'd honestly forgotten that Spider-man 4 was slated to be a reboot; I def remember being psyched about it though. They'd be fools to not have Bendis involved. Ideally, I'd like John Favreau having a hand in writing as well, but if he was solely involved in casting, and got to throw his weight around for casting the way he did in selecting RDJ for Iron Man, I don't see how it wouldn't be a blockbuster.

@Nemrut: it's been a while since I picked it up, but there are usually a handful of issues with different artists. One arc in particular was a showcase of different artists, and slightly outside of the Ultimate timeline - almost like a montage.

Now you've made me want to read it again - but I don't work at Borders anymore, you bastard D8

Ultimate Spider-Man 1-111 penciller was Mark Bagley and only him, which is by the way record in mainstream comics for the longest run with also only one writer. 111-133 penciller was Stuart Immonen. After restart and rename as Ultimate Comics Spider-Man main penciller is David Lafuente but he is not as awesome and quick as his predecessors so some issues are draw by other artists.

Can anybody recommend me some Green Lantern stories to check out? I was flicking through one of the preludes to Blackest Night, and it seems rather cool but I'd like to do a little background reading before I head into that. Thanks in advance.

I'd advise you to start with mini Green Lantern: Rebirth and go from there to the beginning of Green Lantern vol. 4 by Johns (it has 42 issues before BN starts). No need for older stories to enjoy Blackest Night and truthfully before BN there was even better event called Sinestro Corps War. You can also add Green Lantern Corps, but I usually read it only when it has crossovers with a main series.

I just heard of this a couple days ago and I will be ordering it from my comic shop ASAP. This got me interested. Between this and Irredeemable, I love comics again.

Well this also Firefly/Serenity news, but I will write it here - "Serenity: The Shepherd's Tale" was at last published. And if you think that you know who Derrial Book was before he became a shepherd then I can assure you - you are wrong.

Oh, so that's what happened. I'd always wondered what Book's backstory was. The big secrets aren't that much of a surprise, but the story itself is told very well. It's a story that sticks in my head after reading, mostly because the later events change the context of earlier events, so I'm having to rejudge some of the scenes that I read in light of new information.

The way that the last page ties back to the first scene is poetically neat and tidy. It's a bit too obvious for my taste, but I still liked it.

The author of the Shepherd's Tale, Zack Whedon, did a great job with the story's structure. I am a bit disappointed with Joss Whedon though: Derrial Book's backstory succumbed to several cliches that I'd have hoped it would dodge. Some are Zack's fault, but the biggest one is definitely Joss's.

edit: Hmm, on reflection Joss inverted that cliche, so maybe it's all cool. He has a habit of doing that.

I keep wanting to use the term "trope" in place of "cliche"...

    Irredeemable.

It's basically if Superman decided he wanted to kill everyone and be a villain after being a hero for awhile. I just started it, but so far it has a good plot and I've seen a few original powers in the heroes.

I'm reading it since the first issue and it's one of the best takes on "what would happen if one day Superman snapped". It also closing to its end, with two more issues to publish.

It has few very nicely done twists, like the truth why Modeus (Lex like villain) became Plutonian's villain or the origin of the latter. Though somewhere in the middle of the series things became a little stale and lacked focus. Fortunately, once the author set his eyes on the grand finale, everything improved.

For another alternative take on Superman, check out 'Superior' by Mark Millar. It's about a young boy with MS who's a huge fan of the Superior films and comics. Every night, he prays that God will cure him...and then one night a cosmonaut monkey named Orman appears, and agrees to transform him into his hero for a week. Hilarity ensues, but by the end of it it's somehow become quite a sweet love letter to Superman, and is totally not what I was expecting from the writer of Kick-Ass or Nemesis.

The best comic I've read in the last year or so though was Nextwave: Agents of HATE. It's bizarre, twisted and hilarious.

Superior is great and reminds me of early Millar that was writing Superman Adventures comics.

Going with Superman theme, recently restarted Action Comics written by Grant Morrison is pretty much the best thing that happened to Superman since All Star Superman miniseries (also done by Morrison).
