While I'd be okay with building a new character and playing in Roanapur, I'm going to cast my vote for essentially any real world location first. I'd prefer not to have to learn an anime in addition to figuring out how to play.

Edit: don't worry, Riley was joking. You're safe... for now:p

There are a few cities that could be considered analogues. But honestly, if there was a real city like Roanapur it's not like it'd be advertised.

Sloth; Your examples reek of first world bias.

Closest thing I can think of to Roanapur is like Bangkok or something similar really.

Yeah, apparently Port Moresby is pretty close. So, question to you guys who are leaning towards Roanapur or something similar to it: are you imagining us playing as criminals, or some sort of vigilante group, or...?

There are a few options depending on what characters we use.

    1. Generic Criminal Team up
    2. Vigilante Group
    3. Passing through the city and getting caught up in events
    4. Affiliated with a criminal group trying to get in on the city.
    5. Justice League passifying criminal and supernatural elements.
    6. Ocean's 11.

....If Number 6 isn't the way we go I have no faith in this group.

I was actually thinking of something like Angel Investigations, with a bigger dash of Film Noir.
I don't know what my character will be exactly, but I know he'll be a smoker that wears a fedora. And is maybe a werewolf.

Also, it's important to note the the fadora will be inexplicably missing from any official poster/covers that may be made of him.

Not really: Joke. I was serious about the werewolf part, and the Angel Noir part, but aside from that, I don't have a specific picture in mind yet.

Bitch, I will cut you. I will cut you bad.
I will cut you so bad, you wish I wasn't cutting you so bad.

    That is all.

Anyway have a character concept in mind aside from Typhon?

Mine is mostly hashed out. I've even started on the statting things out too. Just need to adjust a few more things and confirm them with our favorite Uncle before presenting the final for approval.

Fine by me. Also depending on what kind of character you create, you might be able to temporarily ignore the more complicated bit of ruleset of the game (spellcasting).

Honestly, researching an anime city is not going to be much different than researching a real one. Of course, there's going to be much less info, but that could even be a blessing in disguise and could allow us to bring even more original ideas to the table. Plus, adding the supernatural elements is what really gives life to the city, and that's a process that doesn't change whether the city is real or not (as long as the city doesn't have supernatural elements, originally). I'll only ask the guys familiar with Roanapur to be somewhat loose with its canon. If another player brings up cool/interesting ideas, don't immediately shoot them down just because they don't make 100% sense with something that was shown in the anime, please.

Finally, Typhon, no need to build a new character (unless you want to). Roanapur is in Thailand, in the real world, and your template and concept still apply.

    I wonder, Jon. I wonder.

Don't hesitate to post/PM it even if it's not ready, if you want to. This obviously goes to everyone.

Alright, now... we've got two players fine with Roanapur, two who sound meh about it, and two who have yet to speak up. I sent Ashan a PM to see if he's still interested in this game, but what about you, WD? What's your opinion on picking Roanapur? What about New Orleans? Or did you have another place in mind?

In the meantime some random nominations. Consider it food for thought:

    Crime P̶a̶r̶a̶d̶i̶s̶e̶ Hell:
    Tijuana.
    Las Vegas.
    Moscow.
    Naples.

    Ruined and Struggling:
    Haiti after the 2010 earthquake.
Japan after the 2011 earthquake/tsunami/nuclear mishap.
New Orleans after the 2005 hurricane.

    Civil Unrest
    Athens during the 2008 riots.
    Libya/Syria/Egypt during the arab spring.

    All-Out War:
God... way too many to pick from.

    Paranoia Galore:
    New York after 9/11.
    Berlin during the cold war.

    Political Nerve Centers:
    Washington DC.
    Brussels.

Seconded for Tijuana. Athens also seems interesting.

If not New Orleans, Athens sounds like fun. I'd prefer Tijuana to Roanapur, too.

As for what I said about throwing up a new character, I just couldn't picture the one I built (or any son of Hephaestus, "the most unfaltering of the gods") throwing in as an actual criminal. Vigilantism, maybe, but he's more of a Dresden type than somebody that would be constantly involved in that sort of thing. If I built a new one, it would be a similar type; just a bit more... flexible. Essentially, I'd prefer to have a character for whatever direction we decide to go.

Tijuana has my vote if we're going for outside-the-USA.

Inside the US I'd probably pick Vegas.

I've lived within Driving distance of vegas for 2/3rds of my life. It's a two faced city to be sure. It's called America's Playground, but all that entertainment and fun is dangerous. It's glittering, enticing, wild temptation that promises excitement, profit, relaxation and tittilation, but the seedy side is always just a few steps in the right (or wrong) direction.

Step behind a casino at the wrong moment, hang around a bar during the wrong time of night, spill the drink of the wrong man at a strip club or a burlesque show, chat up the wrong girl, scratch the door on the wrong car, and you can find yourself chest deep in shit so fast it may quite literally give you whiplash. That's not even accounting for the drugs, prostitution and desperate, non-sanctioned gambling rings that operate below the glittery surface of Vegas.

Vegas is one of the premiere places in the world for the rich and the powerful to go and play. You can get anything you want in that city, everything has a price and anything can be bought so long as you know the right people and have enough cash (or influence) on hand.

But interestingly, if you talk to people who LIVE in Vegas? 80 - 90% of them HATE 'The Strip' and all it's entertainment venues.

Vegas is a hotbed of story potential. Be it intrigue, action, paranoia, crime or politics. And there are certainly a few dangerous areas to show the 'struggling, desperate, and dangerous' side of the population.

It's also the sort of place where I picture lots of supernatural forces being drawn to. Human emotion, and the darker, more chaotic, seedier side of our population and our society come out to play in vegas. We let our hair down, indulge in our more unrestrained personality attributes and throw caution to the wind all in the name of a 'good time', personal enrichment or both.

Vegas is also a bit of a midpoint between the Midwest and the West Coast. If you're traveling from near any point in the midwest to California you're almost guaranteed to go through or at least come very close to Vegas and it's influence, so it has all the attributes of being a crossroads, a place where people and beings of all sorts pass through on a regular basis, even if just to stare at the pretty lights and the merrymakers, on their way to some other far-off destination.

If that isn't just begging for some (or a lot) supernatural attention to take advantage of the atmosphere I don't know what is.

Ashan is unable to play for now, so I guess there's an open spot. Please check out the few questions in post #34, and feel free to nominate a city for our setting or comment/expand on another. Also, if you already have a character concept/idea/sheet, you can post it here or send it to me via PM if you'd like.

Or, we could make it that much more depressing and add pathetic to the mix by applying that to Reno. :p
