I just got this thought into my head yesterday. In GoF Wormtail cuts off his hand (which I find hard to believe... especially with a knife) and then Voldie replaces it with a silver arm. Its all nice and shiny and almost instantly Wormtail no longer feel pain. Infact it works like his real arm. So my question is if that is possible why the hell is Moody clunking around with large wooden claw foot??

If its that easy to give back a cut off limb does that mean they can produce artifical hearts too? Which begs the question can they make an artifical human but slowly replacing all his organ?

Unless you had the Heart, Lungs, Foot , or whatever already to transplant with, it would be quite taxing on the wizard since they would need to conjour a working Lung or Heart. If its permentent

My guess is that this practice got banned since its a form of Necromancy, no matter how helpful it is.

I think this kind of magic is just so obscure that nearly nobody knows about it. And you'll certainly have to be really powerful to create something like a hand. A working inner organ would need even more power.

assuming you did conjure a heart, how would you reattach it?

here comes the question, how well versed in anatomy are wizards? did he conjure the hand as a whole, or did he conjure the outside, and muscle, and bloodvessels, each one apart? conjuring an hand requires little knowledge of inside atanomy, but conjuring a liver, when you do not know EXACTLY where it should be, and how it should connect seems harder. and the hand attached itself to wormatils shoulder.

I thought it attached to his arm right above/below the elbow.

It's an interesting idea...perhaps there are ways. One way is this spell, and that could be explained away as being arcane and unknown. Manip!Dumbledore would keep this spell away from Moody to make him dependant on him, saying that he was researching to find a spell that will help him.

Another way is potions...if you can regrow bones, why can't you regrow the muscle tissue and nerves, etc? Perhaps this is too expensive for Moody...to do all of this might require potions that are very expensive to create.

Another reason is that he might just find it butch...if it's comfortable, and i;m sure magic can do at least that much, then he might like the appeal of the idea of a battle-scarred warrior.

Wormtail cut his own hand with a dagger, but he also got medical attention immediatly. What if the spells used on Moody that removed his leg were magical and, under certain cirumstances, he didn't get to a healer in time, or the spells prevented reatachment or a new appendage being placed. I mean what if something heavy like a house fell on his leg, all that would be left is a pancake.

Dumbledore also had a dead hand in book 6, but he didn't try and get a replacement. He also made a show of having Harry not touch it during apparation, so we know it was uncomfortable. The most powerful wizard in the world can't make a silver hand, WTF. he could of done it and warn a cool glove like a rockstar or Michael Jackson, a robotic arm would be cool. Obviously the man knew he was going to die, so he probably just didn't give two shits worth and it made him look weak and old too for preperation of his death.

Why woudl Voldie have a good idea of anatomy? From what I understood he was only interested in becomeing strong enougth to avoid death. I would think that the healers would have very good ideas of human anatomy considering their profession. So they do not know a method of artificial limb replacement?

To become immortal you need to understand the body. If your heart stops your dead. So you need to know how to keep your heart going forever. As for why Dumbledore didnt replace his hand..it could be that the spell voldemort used was one of his own creations. Remember the book said that he created spell and rituals.
