The idea behind SAO: Rebuild is to retell the story of SAO... in a non-retarded fashion. For that, I'm enjoying it, as the characters are far more fleshed out, the world isn't as stupid (floors in an MMO?!), and everything flows nicely. It's going to hit the stations of canon, but as my entire experience with SAO is the abridged series, I'm fine with that. The writing is quite solid, so I fully recommend following along.

Read through the first chapter and... Well I suppose it is technically good, saw no reason to actually continue reading though as I have better stories to read or re-read. If you have time to waste then I recommend it.

That said I never really liked playing MMOs so considering a great deal of the stated focus is to balance it as MMO I am not exactly the target audience so keep that in mind.

I haven't even read it yet, Alraune, and I know it's gonna be awesome.

Went into a recent Cap America binge. Here are some short, decent oneshots I found to kill time.

I must be such a cliched Heterosexual macho man but I find all this Steve/Bucky bromance trend in the fandom so cringe worthy. Seriously, these authors need to stop projecting theirs sexual/emotional fantasies and write actual decent character interaction...

I am seriously the only one that find this completely unbelievable?

Unbelievable implies it's not completely and totally expected, which it is.

Agree with the rest, but that's something that's applied to basically every fandom in existence forever, even if not to such an extent most of the time.

Yeah I guess unrealistic would have been a better word.

Wait, do you have a problem with bromance (the most recent incarnation of solidarity between men under pressure) or slash (out of character male/male relationships)?

Here's another one, where Steve doesn't realize that other people really can't lift Mjolnir.

I have a problem with how bromance is predominantly depicted in The Avenger fandom, in my relatively short experience at least. I feel it focus too much on PTSD with a lot of angst, and that it doesn't do a good job on showing how men actually talk about stuff like that or express theirs feeling. In short, I never feel the "bro" element but too much of the potential "romance" that is all the rage all over the internet. And maybe I am wrong, but I am pretty sure it's because these stories are written, more often than not, by female writer that want theirs favourite characters to act all emotional, affectionate and angsty without actually writing a slash story.

I understand the appeal in making the characters more human, but there are a lot more emotions a human can feel than guilt, depression, angst. Where is the anger? the joy? Moments of simple and unambiguous friendships? Feeling of success?

I know it's easier to write dark, depressing things but it can get tiring.

But I guess it's a pet peeve of mine.

It was pretty good, for the most part, though I didn't much like the ending; Even though I knew that it was going to end with him dying ( it being a Life on Mars homage), I disliked how they went about it. Steve has no wish whatsoever to stay? Seriously? And then they wave away all the changes to the timeline that I thought made it the most interesting, by saying that Steve wished for everything to remain as is, bar Bucky surviving. So the ending takes something away, but the other 5 chapters are pretty good, definitely worth the read. Steve/Peggy is done well, without it being the main point, and I liked the Howling Commandos camaraderie. A bit of angst, but not to an annoying degree, and the friendship between Bucky and Steve was never over the top or slash in all but name.

Anyone have any good fics where Steve wakes up in the 40s and actually manages to change things? Like, actually use his knowledge of the future to good use?

    Calvin and Hobbes

Not sure where to put this, actually, so I thought this'd be the best place. Found it in a blog of all things.

Title: In The Final Minutes Of His Life, Calving Has One Last Conversation With Hobbes.

Not sure who the author is (I think the guy on the blog just cut and pasted without giving the author's name, but didn't take credit for it himself, either).

Calvin is on his death bed as an old man, and has one last conversation with Hobbes.

Tempted to throw this in for review, but with how the author handled his 'serious' familiar of zero AU, I'm going to put it here first.

Familiar of Zero's Saito falls into Highschool DxD. Good writing for the most part, great update rate so far.

Gonna second this rec. It's absolutely ludicrous, and it knows it, and it comes together beautifully. It's absolutely hysterical and accomplishes exactly what it set out to do.

    Here's some more FoZ reccs:

Enslaved - Takes a darker look on the the summoning ritual. Basically, the summoning ritual is designed to slowly wipe any sense of self, and Brimir was a dick. Despite that, avoids turning Louise into some abusive master too. Quite a good fic - potentially the best fic that still stars Saitou. Also takes a very different route to the original (unlike most FoZ fics), with Saitou running off and spending a lot of time without Louise.

Stalker Zero (FoZ/Stalker crossover) - I may have recced this in the FoZ thread ages ago. It's still regularly updating and getting quite lengthy at nearly 200k words. Arguably doesn't really have all that much to it - just a bunch of girls having to get used to living in a violent and dangerous wasteland, without any magic and just guns. Any in depth plot hasn't really surfaced yet. Still really enjoying it though.

There's also this Sekirei/FSN fic which actually had an update recently:

Shattered Blade (Sekirei/FSN) - May or may not have already been recced somewhere, but I'll post just in case. Yet another In Flight copy, but so far it's probably my favourite take on "Shirou goes to Shin Tokyo". Author has avoided giving him too many Sekirei, which is the main problem with most of these fics. And since Minato still exists as a separate character in this universe, Shirou doesn't have to live at Miya's Inn and deal with all those characters there too much.

    Edit:

Just read No Need for Halkeginian Logic. Pretty fun for a crack fic. Best line:

    Edit 2:

Also gave Through the World Door a go too. Never seen/read Highschool DxD, and haven't enjoyed any of the crossovers I've come across so far, but quite enjoyed this one - after you get past all the Louise bashing (which, to be fair, is actually used to good effect in this story). Saitou's character reminds me a bit of a more bitter version of Emiya Shirou we see in many FSN xovers (Gabriel_blessing's stuff, God Slaying Blade Works, etc). Saitou's trauma, bitterness and resentment works as a good contrast to the lighthearted, ecchi world of Highschool DxD.

This fic suffers from serious gaki abuse. Jiraiya uses it to refer to everyone, and it sends off a bit of a flag.
