How about the fact the vast majority of FanFics spend most of their time Bashing Ron in a million ways, from eating a lot of food to betraying Harry for 20 pieces of silver? Seriously, that Re-Read is reminding me of all the ways Ron Weasley is the single most under-rated character in Fandom. Outside of "Mirror, Mirror", how many Fics are there that don't Bash or Ignore Ron, never mind make him a legitimately good character?

 

Forging the Sword is the only one that comes to mind.

Mhmm, I think it's good but I don't like how they've started to overdo the ~inside~ jokes. It's probably going to get it's own thread soon but it's been recc'ed and reviewed on Almost Recommended thread like 5 times. It's about AU, Peggy Sue Ron, (technically SI). I'd give it a 4.5/5 so it's worth checking out if you wanna see the Ron-centric gems.

The use of adverbs to convey the emotion that an act supposedly generates on the viewer, I find, is a sign of poor writing.

Stuff like 'he walked menacingly' or 'she sauntered sexily' or 'he suggested threateningly'.

If you want to make an action have an effect based on the character's mannerisms, describe the fucking mannerisms. Spend a goddamn line or two on setting up the effect you want. If he's supposed to be menacing, or sexy, or threatening or whatever else adjective, what is it that makes him so? Give me one or two signs of his body language or facial expression that, if I were to see on a real person, I would immediately identify as fitting that description.

It sort of stems into the bigger 'show don't tell' thing, but this in particular annoys me because not only does it remove any degree of nuance by slamming you over the head with the meaning, but it also breaks immersion and severely reduces whatever impact this was supposed to have. It's just words on (paper/screen).

Probably my biggest pet peeve is intentional bad spelling and grammar. (Grammar Nazi)

Ron bashing is probably my biggest peeve within the fandom. Yeah, he's a git sometimes. But his heart's in the right place.

Unintelligent Dumbledore bashing. He could have handled some things differently.

And, I'm not sure if this has ever happened, but how can anyone bash Hagrid?

 

Intentional? is that a thing? Are there really people out there who just for fucks sake, or some other silly reason, intentionally spell there words wrong or use wrong grammer in stories?

 

I don't if there are, but it wouldn't surprise me.

 

I can see it in dialog if a character can't spell or speak properly. Rowling even did it a couple of times when she had muggles repeating something they heard but didn't understand. However that's the only time it would be appropriate. Generally speaking if there is bad spelling and or grammar in the rest of the story then it's just the author with plain old bad writing skills.

I fed up with people who don't know any physics commenting on special relativity.

It's rather common in Mass Effect fics for people to declare that Einstein was wrong. Sorry to break it to you but for object with negative mass (like is what is described as mass effect being able to achieve) faster than light travel is both possible and required. This does not violate anything Einstein came up with.

 

Just read a particularly bad Hurt/Comfort fic. How can anyone be THAT UNAWARE about so many completely obvious medical outcomes?
Like, someone hits Harry with a curse that makes his wounds impossible to heal and then Vernon (of course Vernon, he's the devil himself) rips all of his skin open with a spiked shelf. Because it's perfectly normal to survive that.

 

Was this one of those shitty fics where Vernon hurts Harry and then comforts him in a pedophillic way?
