I would guess Madam Pomphrey actually. Heads of house are probably busy with schoolwork and she's responsible for students health.

That's the best answer, I think, but it feels so menial that I'm not calling it a good one.

Maybe magical people get their hair the way they want it at home and then magic just keeps it from growing until they decide to change it.

I like this one. Harry's hair grew back overnight after Petunia cut it.

Which is why he, obviously, must be an incredibly powerful metamorphmagus.

I think PS tells us Harry has to cut his hair quite often, if memory serves right. I personally dont like the idea that "magic keeps it that way" such very lame and not like the magic we feels in Harry Potter.

    - Sir, I'll need help cutting my hair, because of my arm...
    - Weasley, cut Malfoy's hair for him.

Whoops, was that your jugular vein? Sorry, this is what happens when a third year tries to use a severing charm.

I dunno, I like the idea of a spell specific to cutting hair actually - meaning no accidental decapitation - and I assume students would learn pretty quick how to not mess it up, it'd be like brushing their teeth. They don't have toothbrushes right? I hope that's magic too, teeth cleaning spell.

I can imagine someone having to go to Pomfrey because they cut off an ear.

Either that, or they could have some enchanted scissors similar to the razor Harry got for his birthday.
Pretty straightforward to use with clear instructions, although they would have to make sure they are alone when they use it, in case someone found it amusing to alter those instructions for them.

What annoys me is how other than the Marauders, Snape, and Fred and George no one ever creates magic. If there's ever a problem for anyone else they'll go research it alright, but to find an answer to their problem rather than to create a new one. It seems like there is almost nothing new under the sun when it comes to magic.

...And Voldemort, and Dumbledore, and Flamel, and Harry's grandfather, and everyone who makes those products that everyone keeps buying...

There are a lot of mentions of developments in magic in the books, if you read carefully. The reason most wizards don't do it is the same reason most people prefer buying a software rather than programming it. Or buy a television rather than build it. It's more reliable, saves time, and it's probably available if you research well enough. And magic, unlike software, had thousands of years to develop.

But the thing is the main characters aren't most people. Most people wouldn't deal with magic like horcruxes and brother wands where problems aren't common enough for cookie cutter solutions that are already written down in some book.

Most of the main characters are school children I don't know about you but I wasn't going around inventing shit at 14. Fred ad George are clearly outliers in this respect.

Considering our limited perspective, we see plenty of evidence of magical innovation. Brooms for example, seem to be the wizard equivalent of iphones, a new one out every other year. Harry (and therefore we) don't really get the right kind of perspective to know what spells and inventions he comes across are new or just new to him. He is not exactly going to be hanging out with many spell-developers or whatever.

[FONT=&quot]So I just got this email:

    [FONT=&quot]

My answer is no. I'm not picking up a story after so long to read a 30k chapters when I have no clue what is going on any more. What the author should have done is instead of taking such a huge break posted this chapters as several smaller chapters over the hiatus. It would have kept my interest.

My inbox is full of stories like this.

The author stops writing for a few months, and I forget the plot. Then they put out a chapter or two, and I say I'll re-read them at some point to catch up... But only if they put out more chapters to make it worthwhile.

I mean, I like Hiver's stuff on SB, and he puts out 1k a day... Which is a few minutes worth of reading, if that - you can do it after your alarm goes off but before getting up and it won't have any impact on your day. But I prefer longer chapters, because it actually gives you something to do.

Striking the right balance can be hard, but months for a 30k is stupid.

I also think that it could become annoying. Having to catch up like that can be very frustrating, depending on how big the updates are, and the size of the fanfic.

Well they did mention a hair loss curse in the first book, so I assume there would have to be a variation.
