From a certain angle this is actually technically correct, as the Principality of Wales was annexed into the Kingdom of England by the Statute of Rhuddlan 1284, a process completed by Henry VIII with the Laws in Wales Acts 1535 and 1542.

@Lord Twain because it's a blatant and hamfisted self-insert wish fulfillment character. It adds nothing to the character or to the plot, and smacks of author intrusion. While there are elements of wish fulfillment to just about all writing, a good author will at least maintain a degree of separation from it.

As an example, James Bond is pretty much peak male power fantasy, but doesn't carry this same problem. Why not? He's the stereotypical Byronic hero, clearly a power fantasy of the author. But it's not personal to the author. They're creating an experience for the reader, not for themselves. Now, on the other hand, if somebody wrote a James Bond whose secret ambition was to write a best-selling spy thriller...

The issue isn't characters who are writers. It's protagonists who are writers. Especially in a first person narrative. Because it's clumsy, and obvious, and unnecessary. Imagine you're watching a show, and one of the characters is walking around with a massive erection. It has no bearing on the plot. None of the other characters seem to notice or comment on it. It's just there, as a weird distraction like an itch inside your mind. It's not relevant, but because it's so out of place your attention keeps getting pulled back to it every time it's on screen.

That's what it's like when a protagonist has an internal monologue about how they want to become a writer.

Otherwise good analysis and well-made argument, but funny you should mention it… this is, of course, not the case of movie-James Bond, but there's an extent to which the literary James Bond was, in fact, an author-avatar of Fleming (who had had background in spywork, alongside, of all people, Jon Pertwee). And at the same time, it's worht remembering that the literary Bond is a much less heroic and likeable character than the cinematic version, to the point that Fleming didn't care for him as a character. So he's both more and less of a "marty-stu" than you make him out to be.

Again, just playfully arguing that one example. The rest is a valid argument which has actually more or less convinced me there.

My pet peeve it when authors make Lily Potter a pureblood because God forbid we actually grasp one of the morals JKR was trying to impart.

Huh, I haven't seen that one all too often. Hermione as wizard-born, yes, but Lily?…

Do you mean Muggles in fanfiction, Muggles on DLP, or just human beings of our world in general?

There are a bunch of common ones that bother me (like pretty much every story that deals with Occlumency for example) but one that stands out that I never see mentioned:

Werewolves in Harry Potter aren't powerful warriors. They are people suffering from a cursed illness. I've seen many stories where Lupin has incredible senses, superhuman strength and stamina (which makes Tonks happy, wink wink), can turn into actual wolves, yadda yadda. These people seem to have forgotten that in PoA, Lupin was sickly & prematurely aged.

Admittedly, I think part of the problem was caused by Fenrir Greyback and particularly the movie version where he was this big hulking bad ass looking dude, but it still bothers me.
