Yep, agree with you 100% for sheeple, or just sheep used in the same context. One that's been getting me for years is 'certain'. "A certain bushy haired girl" makes me want to throw my monitor out the window.

 

Also all other ways of referring to known characters instead of using their names: the green eyed boy, the bat-like professor, the blond-haired idiot, the dog-animagus, the old man...

I'd say this is yet another example of people hearing advice ("avoid repetition if possible") and misunderstanding the meaning of it.

 

Spanking is my biggest pet peeve, almost every Snape adopts/raises/mentors Harry fic always seems to complain some form of spanking. A prime example is this fic:

(Read chapter 27 to see the most ridiculous part of the fic. It sums up what is wrong with fanfiction).

Another pet peeve of mine is when the books are copied almost completely, with only a few alterations. Like Harry being in Slytherin. Or Snape being Harry's father. If I wanted this I would re-read the books.

Also a pet peeve is when a teenage Harry behaves like a young child. I read a fic where Harry drew a picture for 'Grandpa Dumbledore' as a Christmas present. The adults called him sweet. This Harry would also cry at every opportunity and be spanked by 'Dad' for even arguing back. He is a teenager!

There are many more I can list but with all the problems in FanFiction I'd be here all day.

 

This the biggest problem with "Severitus" fics. When the discipline is described it comes off more like a pedophile's fantasy than a real life scenario.
As for the teenage Harry acting like a child fics. I always thought that those where fics where Harry or his guardian had brain damage, because I can't see Severus Snape giving two shits about Harry and his drawings unless he (Snape) had brain damage to begin with.

I realize it's an actual, real-world, superstition that if you sneeze it means someone is talking about you, but it's obviously antiquated nonsense, so I'm surprised (and mightily annoyed) at how very often it shows up in HP fan fiction: Especially when otherwise non-superstitious characters are being shown to seriously believe it.

It's well beyond tired, now.

Though the superstition seems to have originated in the East (China, Japan, Korea...), it isn't exactly a foreign concept here, given the Western superstition that if your ear itches it means the same thing (with the addition that whether what they're saying is good or bad depends on which ear itches).

If I had to guess, though, I'd say the sneezing trope's prevalence in HP fic is mostly down to the notion getting a lot of play in even the most serious anime; and if there's one thing fan fic authors are good at, it's mindlessly regurgitating anime tropes outside of the anime genre.

It's just sooo... It's that oh-so-deadly combo of being both stupid in the first place and hideously overused.

The worst part is that it so often rears its ugly head in otherwise good stories that don't employ any of the other usual anime bullshit.

It's not something specific to fan fiction since I think I've seen it in movies, but what really irritates me is when Harry or someone else starts whining about how they can't kill the bad guy because then they'll be as bad as that person. Yes, because putting down a mass murderer/rapist/terrorist/etc. and preventing anyone else from becoming their victim is just as bad as murdering/torturing/raping a ton of innocent people. I suppose we can't blame them too much, though, since JK Rowling wrote that sort of crap into canon with Harry being famous for using an underpowered charm taught to twelve year olds to combat people trying to kill him and his friends.

 

Kiddie ending for kids book. Their are a bunch of places where JK Rowling made it more family friendly. I mean their was never any mentions of sex in any of the books, yet you have a bunch of horny teenagers locked in a castle with little to no adult supervision?
