Canon Hermione is average looking (I believe). I don't have a problem with pushing that a little though, but that's because it's fanfiction, and tbh when I think of "Hermione" I think of how Emma Watson looked in the 4th movie onwards. I normally hate the movies interpretation on the books, but this one I cannot unsee...nor do I really want to. Depends on how religiously you want to stick to canon I suppose, I think looks are the most flexible part of their character as far as writing goes tbh. Personality is more important, looks are icing.

Well, that is kind of like how it is in canon. Harry nearly always gets all of his knowledge from Hermione or Dumbledore, never researching anything himself.

 

It's notable that the ugly duckling turned into a swan. GoF was pretty clear that Hermione can be rather pretty, it's just that she doesn't put effort into it normally. And people (especially men) generally underestimate how significant putting effort into it is.

I always laugh at the millions of men going on about how they prefer women without make-up, normally in praise of pictures of women who are, in fact, wearing make-up. What they really mean is that they prefer women who have minimal, well-executed, natural-looking make-up. The use of make-up is so ubiquitous that we don't know what women look like without it anymore.

No doubt there would be less benevolent Snape fics, or Snape/Lilly, or Snape/Harry shit floating around. Rickman is a fantastic actor, but really, he wasn't nearly as much of an asshole as Snape is in the books. Not to mention, not nearly as ugly.

Let's be entirely honest, as much as we love to say how much looks DON'T matter, the fact is that they do. They do a LOT. We are biologically programmed to like pretty things and dislike ugly things, there's nothing wrong with that. People need to stop being so self righteous on the matter.

 

One of my massive pet peeves is Sexual Predator!Fleur. The kind that uses her aura for everything, literally everything, acts the part of silly blonde but in reality she's a manipulative, heartless bitch that loves only herself. Basically Sesc's Fleur.

I feel like that is the opposite extreme of Insecure!Fleur, and just as annoying.

 

Can we not have some kind of magical middle ground.

Eh, i was being cheeky. She's never really fleshed out in canon. I'd have despaired if she had been though and was on either end of the FF personality 'extremes' when it comes to her character.

 

In my opinion the only thing canon did wrong when it came to Fleur was make her yet another reward to the Weasleys for being the stars of the series. Seriously, they're poor so in the end (almost*) everything works out as good as it possibly could for them?

*Exception: Fred died. But really...that's it.
