Story rehashes that never actually diverge from the original fanfiction that "inspired" it.

Problem with the sitting together is that we have multiple instances in HP canon which show us that it really happens.

1971: James and Sirius sat together on the train and the rest is history.

I wonder though what made Lily choose for Gryffindor, from the conversation she and Snape have with James and Sirius she doesn't like them and knew they wanted to get into Gryffindor.

    Yet she still chose Gryffindor...

1991: Let's be honest, if Harry hadn't sat with Ron on that train ride he would have been placed in Slytherin. Hell if Draco had shown a little bit more tact while in the robe shop he could have convinced Harry to join him in Slytherin *cough*They shook hands*cough*

But Draco's bashing of Ron and his family made Harry want to be anywhere but Slytherin.

Hagrid was just as much to "blame" as Ron and Draco was, if not more so. You know, the adult that introduced Harry to the magical world?

Doesn't mean I have to like it though.

I figure Hufflepuff would be more his thing, at that age, because all he wanted was a fairly normal, as much as normal counted for witches and wizards, life and some friends.

I have to agree but I can't see JKR doing that. Really, how many Hufflepuffs made any dent in the story?

I believe that is a more relevant question.

Back on topic, current pet peeve is one dimensional characters, be they main characters or otherwise.

Super magic family rings. Usually they do everything from grant a magic boost due to 'family magic', protect from legilimency, protect the user from anything short of a killing curse, tell the user special information etc.

Super magic family books that hold long lost, super secret ancient MAGICKS. Or, y’know, just super magic books in general that can compensate for years of magical education.

And lets not forget time-turner/time trunks for training cameos.

A character or setting from anytime before Shakespeare (say, the Founders era) that takes it for granted that everyone speaks perfect modern-day English.

One of these days, I would like to find a Fic where Harry gets sent to the Founders era and spends the first chapter or two learning pre-Norman English.

It's implied in canon that there's a magical way to speed up learning new languages. Barty Crouch spoke something like two hundred languages. Dumbledore spoke Mermish and Gobbledegook, and could recite (but not understand) Parseltongue; it wouldn't be surprising if he could speak more languages as well.

I don't know what shit I have been reading lately but I read a story the other night where Voldemorts real name was Tom, not Thomas. I was happy.

I think changing Voldemorts first name annoys me more then the Harry > Harold name changes, if just for the anagram alone. The whole reason Voldemort created his new identity was because of how plain and common Tom was. Changing his name not only throws the anagram out, but also takes away part of the reason he created Voldemort.

Nope, he did it to distance himself from his muggle father.

I thought it was the other way around, and Dumbledore could understand but not recite parseltongue.

Only a Parselmouth can practically speak Parseltongue. Anyone can go 'shgnh' at a snake, but only a Parselmouth can understand what is said. And I think it's actually impossible to even attempt to learn to understand what particular sounds mean, otherwise it would just be another learnable language, like Mermish. Canon seems to suggest that Parseltongue is magically 'locked' for non-speakers. That means that Harry can't teach it to anyone.

Nope, I was remembering correctly. Dumbledore understands parseltongue. JK Rowling said so in the same interview she revealed he understands mermish.
