Wasn't he talking mermish with the mermen after the 2nd task of this Triwizard thing?

I don't see how this is relevant. Dumbledore canonically understands mermish and parseltongue. Whether he can speak them is another story.
That is, I am not saying he can't speak parseltongue, I am saying whether he can or can't he certainly can understand it.

Damn, I thought he could recite what he had heard (the snake talking on Gaunt's door) but he didn't know exactly what it said. Guess I'm wrong.

I think that the Time trunks have long passed the stage of cameos and can now be considered a main/recurring part of fanfiction.

    This.

If you want special rings, write LOTR fanfiction, damnit.

I have rings in When A Veela Cries, but there's no magic imbued to them, derived from them, or activated because of them. In fact, they're nothing more than a replica of military rings and are being used to symbolize shared experience.

Please stop repeating this every time people post stuff that isn't from the books. It's getting tiring and I believe you already had a lengthy and ultimately fruitless discussion about the trope/theory in the QA thread.

screw you I said canonically. Death of the author has nothing to do with canon. Literally nothing at all. Death of the author is only about interpreting the message of a story and I wish idiots would stop misusing it.

Presumably he means "Death of the Author," or the dumb belief that the author's input into the canon of the universe he/she created ends after publication. Basically only what's in the book is true, anything the author says besides that is to be discarded.

    This - http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DeathOfTheAuthor

And the usage was wrong here. The statement has been used stupidly. Nothing is being interpreted for hidden meanings.

Edit: I thought it was more about interpreting the work. As in, hidden meanings and all. Retconning and all is an author's birthright regardless, I had thought.

    To quote from your link:

That said by this point it shouldn't really but it keeps surprising me how both accurate and to the point tvtropes can be. I will be generous and say that perhaps a tenth of the people using DotA* as justification for anything have the knowledge that would come from skimming that article.

*Wrote the acronym just because I noticed it was this.

Screw yourself. What JKR does, is either giving an interpretation of her own work (which would be no more or less valid than anyone else's) or claim these supplementary materials she released afterwards parts of the books.

No-one has to pay attention to the retcon. The book is written and unchangeable.

I believe, though it has been a while since I read the books, that Dumbledore understanding parseltongue was implied by the books since he could understand Bob Odgen's memory of the conversation between Merope, Morfin and Marvolo.

Also, this point does not come under Death of the Author at all. Just because it's not spelled out in canon doesn't mean canon doesn't say it. It's not really ambiguous or anything.

My newest peeve is Harry Potter themed quests. More specifically all the retarded fanon and characterization that crops up in the discussion. These morons state it as fact and then get into really passive aggressive arguments with each other over who's bullshit is right. Its something you have to deal with in any quest, but Harry Potter ones specifically grind my gears, I guess from all the shitty HP fanfiction I've trawled through over the years.

Look at this bright sparks interpretation of how Dumbledore might react to Harry being consumed and replaced by some eldritch horror that has a female form and subsists on the souls of humans.

Dumbledore wouldn't notice if Harry suddenly became a girl, because he's senile you see? And if he found out about that whole evil demon thing he wouldn't care, as long as it can help against Voldemort its totally fine. For the greater good, you know?

Reviews which aren't actually reviews - because they tell you absolutely nothing.

I'm not talking about "Moar!" and "UPDATESS PLX, GREAT STORY!" but gems like:

    "Bumping the review counter."

I know you can imply the person technically likes your story, but would it be that hard to write that instead of this ^

    Urgh.
