It also raises the suspicion of the author sexing up his own review counter.

Even "normal" people are desperate for attention and recognition. Combine that with the crazies of the internet and you have one fucked up cocktail.

Did you actually read what you quoted? Because what it's saying and what yours saying it's saying are completly different.

No it isn't. He offers different theories based on your interpretation of Dumbledore, and each of them are retarded fanon.

Either Dumbledore is too senile to notice Harry is a girl, or he would use the cosmic horror to fight Voldemort because greater good.

Also, Harry would become a girl because he really wanted to be one, because that's how magic works.

Another peeve as a writer. When people tell you to do something for the most superficial reasons. Double points if said suggestions are annoying cliches I'm trying to avoid.

    "I don't like this pairing."

"It would be awesome if Harry had so and so magical powerz"

"You should definitely give Harry a Phoenix in your story."

    -and others.

    Harems:

    1. Even though half the time Harems are apparently fine in the Wizarding World, Harry seems to be the only person with a Harem.

    2. Half the time, he either gets a Harem via a marriage contract drawn up ages ago for future something-grandkids (when such a match might not be the best move politically) that only now decided to be fulfilled, or James and Lily did their best to set up Harry with every age-appropriate (with some not age-appropriate) girl they could find while he was still a baby and they were still in hiding.

    3. Every girl in Harry's harem is somehow ok with being in a harem, normally against their will, without the slightest bit of jealousy. In some cases, they are all conveniently bisexual and have sex with each other when not having sex with Harry.

    4. Harry apparently has the stamina of a Greek god if he can manage to sexually satisfy his entire harem.

    5. Even though his entire harem may be bisexual, Harry himself is straight and a major womanizer.

    6. Even in Fics where other people get harems, only guys get harems of women. Why don't women get their own harems of men, or a purely gay/lesbian harem, or even a harem with men and women for one big bisexual orgy?

I'm not the biggest fan of the Firebird series, but I did always appreciate its deconstruction of the entire genre.

Um, no. Someone from the "the Author is Dead" camp would argue that the book changes with every reading, that meaning and interpretation is not found in authorial intent, but within the language game between the text and the reader. Thus, it's the reader who brings the meaning to the text, since he's the one that brings the language contract (what each word means, what each sentence means, etc). The text therefore has no meaning outside of itself, it is a simulacrum that has shifted into hyperreality.

What you said above, therefore, is but one idea in literary theory, and one one that is considered quaint by many in the field.

Personally, I actually agree with you that the author determines meaning in the text, but to state it the way you did shows an ignorance of the last half-century or more of literary studies at best.

What's worse is when you have a 50k+ word story and someone reads the whole thing only to complain about a pairing that was explicitly stated in the description.

For that matter, comments that start as "I could totally see..." followed by something that follows rule of cool rather than what is logical or what the character's personality would dictate.

That and "bragging" omakes. If a character is cool, it usually is because they don't feel the need to tell everyone how cool they are or just name drop things they did (often exaggerated). That just make them look petty or arrogant (more than usual)

People who come up with idiotic creature names for Luna to spout whimsically, every time there's some event going on that they want her to ascribe to some Fortean beastie.

Sometimes the writer is just doing it because they're a ham-fisted hack who thinks that's the thing to do because it's the sum total of Luna's character.

Sometimes they're trying to paint Luna as someone with hidden reserves of wisdom beyond her years, who blames people's disagreements or bad moods on made up creatures, so as to address the issue in an indirect and non-confrontational manner, leaving it to the people around her to be clever enough to interpret what she's saying and come up with a solution on their own.

The first reason is bad, the second one borders on fanon cliché, and both of them are going to leave the perpetrator looking like a complete dipshit if they come up with a stupid creature name.

They basically slap a nonsense word that sounds vaguely like a verb or an adjective in front of another nonsense word that sounds vaguely like a noun, and then call it a job well done. Most of the time, though, whatever they came up with just sounds infantile and stupid, and simply reeks of someone who missed the point.

I won't say JKR is a genius (though once you reach a certain level of wealth the point becomes nearly moot), but the 'nonsensical' creature names she puts in Luna's mouth have a certain feel to them... a certain flavor, and it makes perfect sense.

When you do it wrong, it is painfully obvious; and, just about everyone is doing it wrong.

I just hate fanon Luna tbh, I'm really sick of her being either a Seer, Ravenclaw's descendent or special in some other way for no reason other than that she is weird in canon.

It's just so over done. I hate it. Every time Luna even appears now I groan. Why can't people just leave her weird and quirky, there's nothing wrong with that.

Aren't the people that do this usually trying to write Luna/Harry?

Because it's pretty damn impossible to do anything with her that makes sense in a story unless you're writing half a million words and she's one of ten or so characters.

It's why, in a fic I'm writing, I completely ignore her except for a couple general references.

What do you mean it's hard to do anything with her? She's a kind, odd and quirky girl who's practically a social outcast.

Honestly, her age is the only thing stopping a friendship between Harry and her from making total sense (insomuch that it's not farfetched in any way).

Not many kids socialised with others all too deeply from outside their age bracket when I was growing up.

Hogwarts is much smaller though, so much different.

Harry is just a few months older than her, so age wouldn't be that much of a problem.

I think he means year levels. I had hardly any contact with people outside my year level when I was in highschool.
