The analogy is a bit flawed, Rhaegar, because wizard supremacists are a bit different than white supremacists.

After all, while blacks and whites are equal, wizards are superior to muggles by the virtue of having magic.

Of course, being superior doesn't excuse persecution.

Try telling that to most white supremacists. Do you have any idea how much time they spend trying to convince other people and themselves that blacks are inferior in every way imaginable? Entire studies were done comparing blacks to animals, proving they had lesser intelligence than whites, and so on.

There was one part in Taure's "Alexandra Potter" I find strangely relevant: Daphne Greengrass calls Alex pro-muggle because she agreed muggles are 'just like us, without magic.' I know that was from a FanFic and isn't Canon, but I do find it important: as far as Daphne was concerned, there was more distinguishing wizards and muggles than Magic.

Oh course there's more to distinguish between the two groups. Wizards can get significantly older than muggles for one. Daphne probably also thinks wizarding culture and tradition is superior to that of muggles, which is probably one of the primary reasons why muggle-borns are discriminated against. The same is true for our world. A lot of people in Europe discriminate not based on race but nationality, language and culture.

That and the fact that wizards can see things that muggles can't and hide all magical things from them. Since muggles have no idea of things that wizards consider basic, it stands to reason that wizards think muggles have little idea of how the world works. So someone from a muggle background comes to the wizardly world with a lot of preconceptions that are based on things that are lies or from believing certain things are impossible. Different ways to see the world would cause different ways of thinking and since muggleborns come into contact with the wizardly world at 11 there would be some difference in experiences during childhood. Example: wizards can heal injuries more easily so they might have a slightly different perception of what is truly dangerous or not.

Can we all just agree that the Wizarding World, at its heart, is essentially a different culture than the Muggle World, neither of them better or worse than the other, and all the Fics that Bashes one and Glorifies the other are bullshit?

Well, Rhaegar, I'd say that bashing and wanking in general is a sign of bad writing.

A country that uses Dementors to torture prisoners and destroy souls is objectively worse than any modern western democracy. Nothing excuses those atrocities. Wizards do not even claim that they are using torture in an attempt to gain information that might save innocent lives (which still is wrong) - they simply torture prisoners to punish them.

In addition, we don't see much of the wizarding culture in canon that isn't a poor imitation of the non-magical world - or something in dire need of improvement, like Quidditch, who really needs the seeker bias fixed.

Should I bother responding to this, or would it be an exercise of futility?

Don't want to get off-topic here, but I'm kinda confused: do you even like Harry Potter? I read some of your fic, as well as your thread on witch hunts, and the evidence would suggest otherwise.

That's one other pet peeve I have, actually. Why do fanfic authors waste so much energy on bashing things they don't like about the series? They could do so much more with their time, like writing about what they do like, or writing in another fandom, or even writing an original story.

This makes me laugh. Azkaban is like Guantanamo Bay, which, I might remind you, is being run by the so called "paragon" of Western Liberal Democracies. You're not getting information from there. It's just tortuous incarceration. It also practises something called Extraordinary Rendition, which has reportedly been practised by the CIA on a pregnant woman. How does that compare to the wizarding world?

On Topic: An old pet peeve of mine is summer tutoring. I remember some story with Remus Lupin being said tutor, and Harry ascending to mythical level in magic shortly thereafter. I've held the concept of magical tutoring in contempt after that.

It's especially lame because Remus actually does tutor Harry in advanced magic in the books. That's how tutoring should be here, IMO. A student working hard to master some tricky bit of magic, not redefining their magical education or mastering every branch of magic in a few chapters.

I wouldn't quite equate Gitmo with Azkaban, a place for the general population to get sent without a trial at the whim of the Minister of Magic (as seen both by Sirius and Hagrid being incarcerated there without a trial). And as bad as it might be, my guess is that it's a whole lot better than being in general population in a few of the federal prisons, especially when you include Prisonor-Prisoner relations (in all senses of that term).

    Nevertheless...

Yes, though it's not a 'short' time thereafter, because of those nifty little timeturners and the Room of Requirement. I mean, the first few times it was done (Jeconais/Pers, etc) was pretty cool. But anything written in the last few years that has that? Instant red X.

It's a pretty good comparison, actually, given that you end up in Gitmo without a trial. Including citizens of Western democracies.
