Another pet peeve: Claiming, that Molly dosed Arthur with love potion (the books just said, that she made a love potion, not if and how she used it).

... and going back a few years later to give it another go for the few chapters it's worth, only to realise that you've forgotten the name (or that it's been taken down).

Or that it has been taken down because of the FFN purge, replaced with a castrated version and you can't find the uncensored one.:mad::mad::mad:

That's not exactly a huge mental/ logical leap like evil!Dumbledore is.

Why's she making it? She enjoy brewing that much? To see if she could? 'Just in case?'

    Hmm

Either way, in my headcanon I've always downplayed the effectiveness of love potions (as in they'd totally fail if the recipient was against what was going on). There's no way it'd be legal otherwise.

Same here. Kind of like a low-cut top: it's obvious to you what's going on, but sometimes it still works.

Although there does have to be room for a "higher grade" or something (that would not be legal), to account for the Tom Riddle Sr. / Merope Gaunt storyline - he was pretty clearly against what was going on, given that he immediately got the hell out of dodge when the potions stopped.

Not that I'm against the theory since it does kind of make sense that there would be a ban on the Imperius like love potions in a logical society but how do you explain the Ron-Romilda situation. Ron didn't even know her(thus, not merely 'suggestion') and the love potion was obviously legal since WWW sold it.

I always assumed that Merope used Amortentia.

As for Romilda, calling back to Taure's interpretation of potions as simply another way of casting magic (potions being a tool, like a wand, but different), I think the potion she wanted to slip Harry was sort of a Confundus Charm in potion form, or something like that.

A 'Confundus Charm in potion form' that makes you think you're in love with someone is a love potion. I don't see how it could be anything else. I'm also pretty sure that it says in the books that it's a love potion.

I've always felt like the inclusion of those jokey love potion scenes at Hogwarts cheapened Merope's plotline, so I kind of ignore it.

It's a bit of thoughtless humour that's unimportant, unlike Merope Gaunt's situation.

I don't think so. Amortentia is said to be on the same level as say an impirius curse in the fact that it is so powerful. The love potions wre not nearly as powerful. Also I was under the impression that poitions unlike many curses need to constantly be retaken to keep the effects.
Merope's situation with the love potion was completely different to WWW products because she was trying keep a relationship based on nothing as opposed to getting a quickie in the broom cupboard.

So manipulating someone over a long period of time is bad but the date rape drug is ok.

I was speaking in terms of the wizard world whose beliefs are much different then in the real world. If you recall many of the spells taught are not something that you would want anyone to do much less teach young kids to know how to do.

I also had a thought that it could actually get really annoying having dosed someone with love potion. If they are so obsessed with you that they won't leave you alone. However if you want to say get someone to sign a contract...
