Hum I wonder if that is the reason I always write Statue and have to correct. It does looks old enough for me to have completely forgotten it even if the habit remains.

It's an irrational hate, like if someone is constantly sniffing instead of just blowing out their nose, but I absolutely loathe anonymous reviews on FFN, especially if they raise points I want to respond to. I refuse to write humongous author's notes.

    "...brokered no argument..."

It's "brooked no argument," always, no exceptions (except, perhaps, in old Python sketches).

Those might be the most surefire ways, but...

Polyjuice is hard to brew (unless you're a prodigy and author avatar with plot protection on the side) and though I'm too lazy to look it up, I think the ingredients might be expensive. Also, I hope your scam only takes about an hour to pay off, or you're going to need more potion. If we're talking long con, the potion may cost you more time, money, and labor than if you just got an honest job.

Imperius is a 'go to jail and never come back' spell. Perform it on muggles, particularly in areas where nobody should be doing magic, and the chances of getting caught are probably better than if you did it to another wizard.

I've always thought the best way to make money off of muggles, without doing anything illegal and with absolutely minimal risk of breaking the Statute, is with Reparo.

Just find expensive broken shit, procure it either at a massive discount or totally free, then repair it and sell it at a massive profit. Even repairing something one piece at a time, like a classic car, would probably be worth the time and effort.

You know what eyeglass frames go for? Harry could have slipped Hermione 50 pounds after she fixed his glasses and still could have considered it a hefty discount, considering what decent frames go for.

Now, multiply that by 'mint condition Plymouth Superbird.'* ;)

*or '57 Chevy, since you're only about a thousand times more likely to find one of those in a junkyard than even part of a Superbird.

New pet peeve of mine - Worm fics that don't seem to understand that due process is a thing that exists. I don't care if Taylor's triggered with the powers of a demigod, you can't just go around attacking random people with Empire Eighty-Eight tattoos! Reality doesn't work that way! If they're just sitting around, minding their own business, and you show up and beat the tar out of them, they aren't going to prison!

Nazis they may be, but they're still American citizens!

Something tells me that the Dursleys never bought Harry glasses with decent frames.

Random Omnipotent Being. AKA Deus Ex Machina but usually at the start of the story.

Oh, so like ASB / Alien Space Bats. Makes sense to use in some stories, but they're used too often nowadays.

I notice people use the acronym 'iirc' quite a bit. What does that mean?

This made me laugh. I'm with you, but I know I make this mistake sometimes as well. Not purposefully, but while my brain says statute, my fingers type statue. I think it's more of a muscle-memory thing, because the same thing will happen with some other words that are similar.

Yes, but the replacements would have probably been expensive. Also, it was just a random example. "It's only a model."

Then again, at that point, he'd just found out he was loaded and was out of the Dursley's reach for a while; he'd have probably welcomed the chance to buy new glasses, no matter how much the frames cost.

    -----

Peeve: Stories that rehash canon (and I could just quit there, quite frankly) where one character is given every moment of glory, large or small, every other character had in the books - leaving nothing for the other characters to do but gape in awe at the author's 'chosen one.'

The movies were bad enough about propping Hermione up by giving her bunch of Harry's and the majority of Ron's moments, but fan fic authors have no compunctions about pushing this to the nth degree, never imagining it will come across as bad writing.

Redo fics always do at least a little of this, because the one coming back in time obviously has more information and knows what happened the first time. If you're the time traveler, dragging your heels just so someone can still have their 'moment' from the first time around would be silly (unless you're desperate to preserve certain aspects of the timeline), so you do the thing or reveal the answer or whatever, yourself. (Of course, sometimes the time traveler does steal some of these moments just to look cool...)

The kind of thing I'm talking about, though, is much more in your face, while at the same time having none of the justifications a redo fic has. It's bizarre that anyone thinks they can write like that and be taken even remotely seriously.

    Fuck.

Slytherin!Harry, where his Slytherin side consists of smirking, narrowed eyes, and mildly intelligent plots, which are promptly mentioned to everyone and receive pats on the back for the oh cunning.

I'd love to once read really cunning character.
