A new pet peeve for me is when you read a fic and most of the people in the world have a pensieve. This is usually followed by someone, usually Harry who says oh that's a great memory I'll just put it in the pensieve for later or some version of that.

These usually include a chapter dedicated to Harry dumping his previous Hogwarts years in it and somehow exonerating Sirius and bashing Dunbledore and/or the MoM

 

Fanon does have a bad habit of making rare things not so rare. See occlumency/legilimency too.

 

Came across this yesterday when Snape accused Harry of something he didn't do. Harry denied it, looked into Snapes eye and raised his occlumency shields. To - what?
Stop Snape from finding out he was telling the truth? Could be explained, but it still bugs me.

 

IIRC occlumency is just making it impossible to read your thoughts and body language, so wouldn't it be pretty obvious your lying if a thirteen year old kid buts up an occlumency barrier?

 

How about poorly explained Dumbledore Bashing? More often than not, he's either seen doing stupid but not evil stuff, simply stands in the way of Harry because Reasons, or is trying to defeat Magical Hitler.

Dumbledore stealing from Harry's vault is a good example of this: it's stupid since it might risk the goblins' wrath and makes a potential enemy out of Harry for no real reason, unexplained because we never get an idea what he does with it (I like to think he has his own personal pool of gold coins, ala Scrooge McDuck), and it usually glosses over the fact the only thing Dumbledore might have done with the money was fund the fight against Voldemort.

 

Or the fact that an 11 year old Harry would know enough to give a shit about not receiving his cloak or having a few galleons stolen. I don't think it was ever mentioned whether or not Harry ever knew the full contents of his vault, and look how many people got his gold for him.

 

I've only seen one fic where anything dealing with Dumbledore and Harry's money was done okay, at the very least, and that's Letters by TheEndless7. Why was it decent? It was used to put the slightest question in Harry's mind between him and Dumbledore, but easily resolved when Sirius looked through the paperwork, sitting in Dumbledore's office, and noted he simply shifted money around to avoid the Goblin's fees. Nothing more than that.

Usually, if there is anything more, I click out quickly.

 

I know "don't call me Nymphadora" is canon but its use in fanfiction has now reached the point where I despise those words.

No need to put that in with the actual story chapter.

Anyway, it's not fucking difficult to scroll past them. It only becomes a problem when most of the story is responses to reviews and ANs.

 

No, it becomes a problem when I have to see/read inane crap that isn't part of the story. I might find it acceptable if it was actually thought provoking or added another layer to the story, but it's usually just a giant waste of my time when I've bothered to read it.

 

I agree that giant ANs are irritating. Personally, I refuse to put review responses in updates and only respond via PMs, though I don't mind if they're at the bottom. Whatever, really. If it's a guest review, I don't respond because I can't send a PM.

I don't mind if the bottom of a chapter has review responses. Easy to skip over and I can see maybe being interested in the responses even if I didn't ask the question.

For some reason having them at the start is far more annoying though.

I think just about every author that has made a joke with her name in a fic has long since lost the humor behind it.
To be honest I would find it more irritating to have to constantly be correcting people on my name that I'd just say fuck it call me by whatever you want.
