I like magic to remain unexplainable and, sometimes, inconsistent. You take the magic out of magic when you start applying logic and reason to it. It's magic because it's magic. "It's magic" is a perfectly fine explanation, because that's what it is. You could apply the same for science, really: Shove a ice cube tray full of water in the freezer, wait 'til it freezes, take it out and say "It's science", and you'd be right. You're not going into any extra detail, but you're still correct.

My biggest pet pleasure, though, is definitely the changes of major characters, such as death of extreme character development (even negative). I like authors who take risks with the characters, are unafraid to kill them off or have them suffer some life changing tragedy. I really don't like it when dead characters come back to life, or when characters shrug off their psychological trauma as if it's nothing.

 

Actually saying "it's magic" is very bad, as it's just drawing attention to something that shouldn't be in the center of attention. If you want to have magic that's just magic, then make it so. There's no need for any explanation in a setting where magic is everyday thing.

I like my ice cubes as ice cubes; if you see need for explaining them, it's better be a good explanation.
