When someone chops off their own hand, do they not go into shock and die? Why is Wormtail wandering around for at least 20 minutes without a hand after sacrificing it for Voldemort's rebirth?

Also it is possible to still react during shock.

I smashed my elbow a few years ago, and my mind went into a state of clarity. I was able to guide my sister through the first aid I needed.

Shock can sometimes be debilitating, but on other occasions it can force your mind. Basically it's adrenalin so people react differently.

Although he might have taken a numbing potion before hand (I'm sorry about the horrible pun).

but really I would agree with Litha, everyone reacts differently to shock.

Also as we have seen, wizards react differently to physical things than muggles. I forget exactly what (sorry), but I remember RedHen has a good article on this where he lays of several occasions where things have happened to a wizard that would seriously injure or kill a muggle, yet the wizard has very little damage.

Wormtail also should have died from bloodloss, because when a limb is hacked off, there would usually be copious amounts of blood gushing forth from the wound, which was neither shown in the movie, nor described in the book.

That's so true! That woman can make up whatever weird shit she needs to move the story on, no wonder she chose to write about magic.

example: Harry doesn't die in CoS because phoenixes are not only immortal and apparently immune to the gaze of a basilisk, they can also lift heavy loads, burn shit up, and (last minute power) heal basilisk bites:rolleyes:

I think the shock may have been reduced because he did it to himself and expected it.

Or maybe he was just high and didn't respond to pain...

she does that cause she writes herself into a corner but then shes like "wait i can just make something up claim its magic and on with the story!"
thats why im curious to see what shes gonna do with this horcux nonsense.
seriously you have one book to find all these things scattered across the globe.
so instead she'll devote one or two chapters where hermione looks in a book and then uses a special spell made to summon horcuxes. or something dumb like that.
but thats just me. . .

Redeye makes a good point. Since we know that the horcruxes have anti-summoning spells on them, Hermione will merely run into the Muggle version of JK Rowling (who is actually there in that HP world) who will teach her the mystic spell "Deus Ex Machina" which when cast, will instantly end the book with a happy ending.

Or perhaps Wormtail merely used the silent spell "Limbus Cauterus"?

I would like to point out that Wormtail's stump was still bleeding up until he got his replacement. Read the passage and you will see that it is mentioned as bleeding throughout the narrative, he was also sobbing in pain and cradling it when he can. Also note that wizards have been consistently more resilient to injury than muggles throughout the series, I don't see why this would be any different.

If it was truly bleeding then he would have dies of blood loss in the 20 or so minutes that Voldie was gloating. I mean this wasn't a paper scratch with a little blood. This was his ARM CUT OFF. That would reveal a lot of blood vessels. I think he may have cast a minor healing charm on the stump or else he would have died.
