I was thinking more along the lines that the ripples in his first year end up making huge waves later on. It's not that he is trying the same things over and over again but the situation has changed so much, he no longer can predict or stop anything and without his friends, he doesn't have the support which allowed him to win the first time. Such as, perhaps due to Harry's new personality, or trying to go after Peter and failing due to being in Slytherin, Peter leaves before the Weasley's go to Egypt and thus, Sirius never escapes and Harry has no proof about his innocence.

As for Dumbledore... that is the biggest problem. You really need to remove him from the equation. You would almost need him to die very early because of the changes for this to work.

There's a film, I can't remember the name, where the government gets a bunch of inmates to be some sort of special crime fighting team. One that can be sent to do the dirty jobs, the ones governments can't be seen to sanction. I would love to see Fudge (or perhaps a different Minister as this is a little bold for him) free some non-death eater criminals from Azkaban before the mass breakout. Then follow them as they do their best to disrupt and destroy the uprising. With a range of talents backgrounds and crimes it could showcase a whole load of different magics.

How is that a problem when he knows the type of passwords Dumbledore uses or can catch him after one of the Feasts?

I would like to take this moment to say that it still pains me that In Essence Divided (which featured similar idea) is dead.

I would also like to take this moment to say that I'm still mad that the movie version had them fighting evil god instead of doing dirty work that government can't be associated with.

Harry Potter meets Max Max. Muggle society goes boom, takes wizarding society out with it, albeit slower in the inevitable descent into anarchy. Nuclear fallout doesn't quite destroy magic but let's just handwave it and say it takes a hell of a lot of magic to keep the radiation and such from poisoning the entire world, and by the time that the story opens, very few areas and witches and wizards are still thriving.

My thoughts for the story is that a mid-to-late twenties, maybe early thirties, Harry Potter is roaming the wastelands of England. Say he used to be an Auror(because it parallels Max as a cop) before he was dismissed/exiled whatever by a corrupt element in the struggling Ministry. His wand is probably snapped to reduce his active ability to use magic.

His goal is to survive, find another wandmaker, find another home where society hasn't gone completely off the rocker. His main threat is some jumped up Death Eater who has managed to claw their way to power in this broken society following Harry's exile, someone who pretty much rules like Voldemort had during 1997-98. Getting that fucker out of power will offer Harry a means of returning to the life he used to lead, if he still wants it, or pressing on now that he has a wand and no one actively gunning for his head.

More original trilogy than Fury Road, if that's what you're asking.

Don't know if this has ever been done before but here goes nothing: At the night of his resurrection, Lord Voldemort finds to his horror that the blood protection he used to create his new body works a little too well, and that it will even act to protect Harry from itself. Or Voldemort learns that because of the blood protection towards Harry Potter in his system, he actually can't/isn't able to kill Harry, no matter how much he wants to.

This would try to keep everyone with their canon characterizations, the only difference if Voldemort's own body prevents him from trying to harm Harry in any way (an example is that when he aims a spell, no matter how hard he tries, the blood protection makes it so that he keeps missing Harry), even outright forcing him against his will to defend Harry if need be. Also, though Voldemort can verbally ask someone else to kill Harry, his body will then force him to protect Harry, and essentially kill the person he asks to kill Harry.

The closest analogy I can think of to this situation that I could use as a comparison is the three laws of robotics, with Voldemort representing the robot bound by the three laws, Harry the human the laws bound the robot/Voldemort to protect, and the blood protection the laws itself.

Voldemort's goal in the story is therefore trying to find a way to both complete his goals in a way that doesn't bother the blood protection, and to try to make so that the blood protection no longer can control him, thus allowing him to kill finally Harry, while at the same time keeping the benefits of the protection in order to be able to touch Harry.

A Harry/femSirius story that happens during the fourth and fifth year. Like canon Sirius, FemSirius projects James into Harry, and since she loved James in this universe but never got together with him, that leads to the development of this short story. The conflict would be over Harry's feelings getting confused and he not being sure if she loves him or his father.

Is there a market for this?

I'm still trying to wrap my head around fem!Sirius. I have quite literally never considered that in all of the years that I have been here. It's... inherently odd. I've no problem with fem!Harry or fem!Voldemort stories but doing that to Sirius is just breaking my brain right now.

Putting that aside, my objection is mostly the age difference that was brought up elsewhere about Harry/Tonks, surely that is far worse with Harry/fem!Sirius when he's only in fourth year. I'd say bend canon to where she doesn't die at the end of fifth year and while there's signs that fem!Sirius is seeing James in Harry, it doesn't develop into anything until at the very earliest after Dumbledore's funeral at the end of sixth year. Probably push it back further to somewhere in seventh year when the Ministry falls and they have to retreat to Grimmauld Place, so the tension is forced to build and capitalize upon all of the emotional stuff you wanted to tell.

One could write a really good mindfuck story with this. She's much older and sees him as his dad. He's thinking about a woman who's gone through a decade of unimaginable mental trauma. There's a lot of shit you can pile on there in both directions without even trying too hard.

Agree with Z and push it back tho, there's enough material to work with without going into flipped Lolita territory. And if don't go with Grimmauld, one might actually succeed in making "Harry camps in the Forrest of Dean" into a story worth reading, which would be a landmark achievement in the fandom.

Yeah the age difference is a problem, but I thought it would be okay since I would not be depicting the romance as actually healthy in the first place. But I must say I prefer pushing into the Seventh year. It gives more room for build up.

Now this is what was going through my head when I thought this bunny. Going into the heads of individuals with their backgrounds an going through this situation rings as really interesting to me. My only concern really is with the rehash. Obviously, I want the characters to be the focus, so changing the plot too much might shift from it. On the other hand, a rehash is just abhorred about anywhere.

    Writing this down as well.

Should cook something up and put it under WBA? I was thinking a good start point would be the Shrieking Shack where they meet at the end of PoA.

You know how there are tonnes of "Unspeakables are secret agents/special forces" fics out there? Usually with 100 odd people in them (a huge amount for a population of 30k or so tops). I was instead thinking of a fic where the Unspeakable do have their own little "special forces" outfit but it's like half a dozen underfunded guys and girls with a few others who moonlight for them on occasion.

So they try to deal with prospective dark wizards and the like but they never have enough money so training is a bit sloppy, never have enough people etc. Basically a scrappy SF unit. Being the underdog I think it would have potential as an interesting story instead of "woo, super special forces shit on everyone else!"

    But they don't.

I never understood this need to force them into the role of wizard swat, or wizard mi-6. We have a description from canon of what they do and surely there is enough plot in the study of unknown magics without the need to descend into combat.

It can be written along the lines of Warehouse 13/Eureka/Star Trek, except without the need of technobabble to explain why what is happening isn't magic as it clearly appears to be. You can have old tomb subplots, heist subplots, weird magical artifact shenanigans, competition with unspeakables from another ministries shananigans. There are near endless plot possibilities without a single wand being raised in anger.

Idea came after I wondered how wizards can know for a fact they have non static souls but also lack any obvious spirituality. But I also realize there's no way I could pull off a major AU.

Herpo the Foul’s revolutionary discovery firmly establishes how the a person’s actions and magic can affect the soul. Greek wizards for centuries question endlessly and seek to learn more and more about the most fundamental part of man. Are effects on souls relative? Are certain acts absolutely corrupting? Can any soul be fixed or is there a point of no return?

Then Aristotle, building on his mentor’s work, publishes De Anima, and the world is never the same. His comprehensive work details not just how actions and motives influence the soul, but how the soul influences a person, pointing to how Herpo’s degradation of the soul degrades mind and body. He puts forward a new idea: binding a whole and healthy but most importantly worthy soul to an equally worthy idea or concept.

Every great wizard afterwards pursues his theories. They tie themselves to concepts ranging from the grand to the meager hoping of everlasting life, reverence, or power. Some clash as ideological rivals, while some form coalitions to prop each other up. But even ideas change and die. New challengers rise, pushing their own concept. Others simply lose relevance as society marches on. Wizards turn to desperate means to preserve the idea of their nation, position, religion, landmark, or whatever else they chose to stake their claim to.

The setting would start with Harry in a very different Britain. Hogwarts is run by the four (or three depending on how Slytherin’s falling out is handled) founders who bound themselves to their respective houses. Other legendary wizards are around with varying degrees on involvement in the world. The older ones are either the very best and so solidly established they hardly care about the day to day like Merlin or barely holding onto antiquated notions. Either way they would have a relatively light presence in the story.

New comers are competing for their spot though. Dumbledore and Grindelwald still had a falling out, but now both are essentially immortal and championing two rival ideologies. Voldemort isn’t satisfied with being one great among many. He is ruthless and arrogant enough to return to Herpo’s dark magic considered mad by any sane wizard. In his reckless disregard for convention, he splits his soul into seven pieces, each bound to separate ideas. The story would be based around Voldemort’s quest for a method to kill his rival’s souls without going through the difficult process of killing concepts. Only idea so far for that method is him trying to recreate Dementors, which would have been driven extinct, Azkaban razed, their creator killed, and records destroyed by other wizards who rightfully feared soul sucking monsters.

Harry’s role depends really on whether or not a prophecy exists. If it does, what it says and when was it spoken. If he’s referred to as an equal in any way like in canon, then his school years should be full of competing interests from Dumbledore and Grindelwald seeking advantage over the other. Voldemort is less aware of the prophecy and its contents, so he seeks to understand why his two most relevant opponents are interested in a kid. The founders, who are mostly isolated to Hogwarts, offer differing advice on how to approach his potential. Of course, his family and friends have opinions about his future as well.
