Dragons, like most sentient species, view themselves as the most important thing to ever exist. They think themselves to be superior in every way to every other lifeform.

They're not wrong.

Not much can kill a dragon, and even less can eat one afterwards - their only natural predator is bigger dragons, although sometimes prey will (futilely) fight back. They're giant, flying, fire-breathing monsters. They inspired myths and legends around the globe.

Contrary to myth, dragons don't actually want gold for any intrinsic value. The same for gems, famous pieces of art, or trophies from their foes.

A dragon's hoard, in reality, is a giant pile of 'FUCK YOU I'M BETTER THAN YOU AND I OWN ALL THIS SHIT! SUCK IT!'.

They don't steal gold because they want it. They steal it because WE want it, and dragons are determined to show that they are better than us, by taking everything we want and, essentially, playing keep-away.


Is that reason enough?

 

It is hilarious that people want gold without any truly good reason and dragons doing the same are supposed to be too illogical to fit in the story with dragons.

 

Woosh! Dragons are clearly not the apex predators. If they were, they would have eliminated humans as a threat as soon as they started using sticks to poke holes in each other.

 

Plus, you know, magical wizards.

 

So both humans and dragons may be apex predators.

 

Say, this thought occurred to me today:

-A muggle can't learn magic, you have to be born with it.
-A wizard can't learn metamorphmagic (totally a word now), you have to be born with it.

I wonder how would things be changed if around the 1700s and 1800s the number of magical shapeshifters skyrocketed.

 

It depends on how the numbers skyrocket, do wizards change themselves artificially via magic? Another though is that the worlds magical population doesn't make sense when you consider that Wizards were around in sufficient numbers during ancient Egypt and that magic appears to be genetically selected for.

 

By skyrocket I mean that metamorphs suddenly start appearing among wizards, exactly like wizards appear among muggles.

 

Dragons collect gold because it's something they have to take by force, therefore the more gold the stronger the dragon. The stronger the dragon the more a lady dragon wants to have hawt dragon sex and make babies.

Natural Selection, yo.

 

So lady dragons are gold diggers?

 

Lady dragons? Maybe.

Dragon ladies? Sometimes...

 

Game of Thrones/Potter Fusion. Been reading the first book the past week, really enjoying it so far. This struck me as inspiration this morning, so is it any good?

EDIT: For reference, this is supposed to be around the point that the Targaryen's were killed during Robert and Eddard's taking of King's Landing and et all. Transcribe Potter in place of Targaryen, (Tom) Marvolo Gaunt in lieu of Robert, Sirius in lieu of Eddard... its a bit of mix-and-match at the moment, but I'm hashing out the details even now. I think I will go ahead and expand on this and see what I can come up with for a proper story.

 

A different setup for dimension-hopping stories:

In 2005, Auror Harry Potter has been recruited by Unspeakables to lead a team dedicated to exploring alternate universes. This Harry Potter is not the one we know from canon (details about his different past would be revealed as the story goes along, no massive infodumps).

This team consists of Harry's girlfriend, Auror Nymphadora Tonks, Harry's best friend from Hogwarts, Healer Draco Malfoy, famed wizarding adventurer Gilderoy Lockhart and Harry's godfather Unspeakable Sirius Black.

Their method of travel involves naturally-occurring tears in the fabric of reality. Unspeakables have developed a way of predicting where and when these gateways will open. Once such a tear has been located, three specific spells cast in quick succession allow to steer it to a desired alternate world.

The first chapter begins early morning in the Forbidden Forest, as Head Unspeakable Xeno Lovegood speaks with the team just minutes before they depart. He states that he doesn't know for long they will be gone, it could be from weeks to months. Of course, they all knew the risks when they signed up, so there are no misunderstandings. During their mission, they will gather as much information as they can about the other world and leave as soon as possible.

The tear finally materializes and Xeno casts the three required spells to open a stable gateway. The team departs.

 

The first thing I thought about after reading this: Liberate tutamae ex inferis...

 

On October 31st 1993 Hogwarts Castle, the people within, the castle grounds, the village of Hogsmeade and a small part of the Forbidden Forest disappear in a massive flash of light. The Ministry of Magic is confused and doesn't know how to explain this. It would take them the next twenty years to even begin understanding the magic beyond the disappearance. Of course, by that time it would be already far too late.

But what had happened to Hogwarts and the area around it? Well, all I can say is that one rainy day something incredible happened in the Shire.

(It would be best to send them long before the events of LotR, like a hundred years, so their presence can nicely affect Middle-Earth)

 

I liked Sliders as well. Brilliant show.

That said, I prefer the concept of a group of competent, but untrained people being thrown into that kind of scenario with no way to get back. Leads to more conflict and less 'I Win Button' situations.

 

Not really a plot bunny, but something I'd like to see done.

A one-shot deconstruction of a self-insert fic. Everything that you'd think could go wrong for the SI, does. He has no special powers, is not related to any character, is muggleborn and not really liked. He wants to use Fanon-inspired spells, they blow up in his face. Would also feature some healthy anti-cliche medicine. For example, Luna would not 'just know' that the SI is from another world. Nothing ever seems to go well for the SI and in the end, thinking he's 'smarter than plot magic' he does some stupid mistake and dies.

 

Hold on. Does everyone cry for him in the end and say how 'he was the best of us' and so forth?

 

No. In fact, most people, if not all of them, forget he ever existed.
