Therefore, we have two options:

1. Voldemort's body is destroyed, his spirit/soul remains on Earth and escapes the scene.

2. Voldemort simply passes through the veil as if through smoke and nothing happens to him.

 

Why would he not die?

 

That is if the veil lets go of his spirit.

When I say die I don't mean die, I mean his body dies.
Why would him falling through the veil be any different then being hit by the killing curse?

The books tell us nothing about the veil apart from the fact that Harry and Luna could hear whispering coming from it.

Sirius ate an AK before he fell through. Given what the Killing Curse does, we must assume that Sirius was dead before he fell through and the veil ate him. Maybe the veil kills, maybe it just doesn't let anything return from beyond it, which from our perspective might as well mean death anyway.

My point: this is the thread to come up with ideas. So choose whatever the hell you want the veil to do yourself

 

Are you kidding? There's a whole bunch of reasons specific countries would be 'better' overall at an academic field than other countries. Especially when their knowledge is entirely recorded and passed down through books and manual instruction.

The goal of this AU is to avoid Canon Rehash whenever possible, while still using canon-like elements. As a result, while they do exist, Hermione and Ron will not be Harry’s close friends and a lot of other things will be different.

July 31st, 1980 - Harry Potter is born.

October 31st, 1981 - The Dark Lord Voldemort is defeated by baby Harry Potter and the First War ends.

November 1st, 1981 - When Sirius goes after Pettigrew, they duel for a bit after which Peter manages to kill Sirius with the Killing Curse. This is witnessed by several people. Peter then escapes Britain, his Death Eater status proven.

November 2nd, 1981 - Bellatrix and Barty Jr. go after Snape instead of the Longbottoms, figuring he knows what happened. When Snape does not cooperate with them, Bellatrix and Barty kill him. As a result, Slughorn remains at Hogwarts and Longbottoms are not tortured to insanity.

February 9th, 1983 - Xenophilius and Pandora Lovegood die in a spell-related accident. Luna, being a pureblood and having similar hair and eyes to Malfoys, is adopted by Narcissa who always wished to have a daughter. Lucius doesn't mind, as Luna is of pure blood and he is willing to indulge his wife's wishes.

April 21st, 1982 - During the chaos after the first war, Gilderoy Lockhart is attacked by Dark Wizards and badly cursed, with a permanent burn on the right half of his face. Lockhart realizes he cannot go through life on luck and fame alone and returns to training and education, eventually becoming a significantly more competent wizard. He abandons his plans of becoming a rich author and instead becomes a mercenary wizard for hire.

September 1st, 1986 - Professor Binns is removed from Hogwarts, after the Board of Governors deems him incapable of teaching properly. He is replaced by Professor Greengrass, Daphne's father, who happens to know the subject well.

May 5th, 1989 - Pettigrew encounters a weakened Lord Voldemort in Albania and is forced to aid his master.

July 1st, 1990 - Quirinus Quirrell takes a year-long sabbatical to gain first-hand experience in Defense Against the Dark Arts.

June 1st, 1991 - Harry Potter is visited by Albus Dumbledore at his home in Surrey. Dumbledore reveals the truth about Harry's parents and Harry's wizarding background. Harry is also informed about Voldemort and his status of the Boy-Who-Lived. He also learns about Wormtail's betrayal.

Dumbledore then takes Harry to live with him for the entire summer.

First, they travel to Diagon Alley for Harry's supplies. Nothing special, just standard school stuff.

At Diagon Harry meets Parvati and Padma Patil at Ollivander's and later goes with them for some ice cream and makes friends.

Their next stop is Godric's Hollow, where Harry is shown the graves of his parents, as well their ruined home. He sees what the rebound Killing Curse did to the building.

Finally, Harry is brought to Dumbledore's home in the Hollow.

June 3rd, 1991 - Harry travels with Dumbledore to the Ministry of Magic. A meeting with Cornelius Fudge takes place, the Minister happy to meet the famed Boy Who Lived.

Fudge is all too eager to allow Dumbledore and himself show Harry around the place. Harry explores the various Departments, except the Department of Mysteries, which even Dumbledore admits Harry is too young to see.

Harry is most impressed with the Department of Magical Sports and Games as well as the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, especially the Auror Bureau where he sees a photo of Peter Pettigrew. He silently vows to one day face the man.

Finally, Fudge, Dumbledore and Harry have a picture taken for the Daily Prophet's newest article: "The Boy Who Lived returns! Harry Potter visits the Ministry of Magic!"

Back at Godric's Hollow, Dumbledore reveals to Harry that all of that was done to make sure the Ministry is always on Harry's side. He mentions that Harry will face many challenges in the future because of his status and he must take every opportunity to prepare for them.

June 4th, 1991 - Harry and Albus travel to Horace Slughorn's home and Harry becomes acquainted with the Potions Master. Slughorn is disappointed that Harry lived without knowing about magic all this time, but is nevertheless hopeful that he inherited Lily's talent for potions.

To check that he offers to tutor Harry for a bit. Harry agrees and Dumbledore allows it as he has several important ICW-related meetings to attend anyway.

For the rest of the day and several next ones Harry begins learning the delicate art of potions.

July 17th, 1991 - Dumbledore takes Harry to see the Romanian Dragon Reserve. It proves very educational and fun.

August 12th, 1991 - Quirrell encounters Peter Pettigrew along with Lord Voldemort and is captured. Pettigrew uses Quirrell's blood as an ingredient in the Polyjuice Potion and is ordered by Voldemort to take Quirrell's place at Hogwarts as a part of their plan.

September 1st, 1991 - Harry is taken to King's Cross by Dumbledore and is shown how to access the hidden Platform.

At the Platform Harry is helped with his trunk by Cedric Diggory and the two become acquaintances.

Harry is eventually joined in his compartment by Parvati and Lavender Brown and the three of them sit together for the rest of the ride.

Draco comes to introduce himself, but wrongly assumes Harry is just as bigoted as he is because he sits with two Pureblood girls.

At Hogwarts, Harry is sorted to Gryffindor as in canon. Gilderoy Lockhart is introduced as the new Defense teacher, though he states that he will only teach for a year as he plans to teach at Beauxbatons the next year. Pettigrew, masquerading as Quirrell begins observing Harry.

That's as far as I got. I considered introducing the Triwizard Tournament and Harry getting more private lessons with Dumbledore about the magical world and magic itself.

I always wanted to read a story where Harry is taken in and mentored by Dumbledore at a young age. They travel the world and learn about the mysteries of magic and stuff.

 

Because obviously we decide adoptions based on hair and eye color. I always feel it odd how many times people try to shoehorn Luna into the Malfoy family. The Malfoys do not seem to be the kind of people who would adopt, unless adoption became some sort of social climbing meme.

Otherwise the plot bunny seems pretty fine though I agree with Scott_Press that it feels incredibly familiar.

They might not, but if Voldemort is in charge, he'd want the purebloods to have a fuckton of children to ensure the continuation of their bloodlines.

Integrating Luna into a family where she'd fit and where people wouldn't question it is perfectly sensible. Into a family with only one child, who are loyal to him, even more so.

 

Maybe something called human decency played a part here? Why does everything has to be about social climbing, when it can be easier explained by Narcissa being a semi decent human being? Or she can't have more children after Draco, so she jumps at the first opportunity of having a daughter that she always dreamed about. Also, better Luna than Hermione.

 

That's not as odd as the authors trying to claim that Malfoys are related to Veela based on hair color.

 

If you want Harry to fuck the Malfoy's daughter, just make Draco a girl and be done with it. Don't write a 35,000 word Prologue to your fic either, 'cause some dickhead will rate it a 1 and ruin your chances of being in the library.

Plot bunny I had after finally getting my hands on 7th edition of Call of Cthulhu rulebooks. And before anyone aska, I have not read Ramsey Campbell's stories as they aren't translated into Polish and I keep forgetting about getting them from Amazon.

The Inhabitant of the Hogwarts Lake.

Eons ago, when the meteorite that carried Gla’aki’s crystal prison had landed on Earth, it shattered into million of pieces, freeing Gla’aki, but at the same time containing him to Earth. Only by destroying every last shard of his former prison can he once again travel between the stars.

One such shard landed on landmass which would later be named Scotland. Precisely, it landed on terrain on which Hogwarts would later be built. When the shard of crystal prison is close enough to a lake, Gla’aki can manifest there, and using his powerful spells and telepathy, lure unsuspecting humans to the lake and change them into his faithful and obedient undead servants.

When the Founders started to build Hogwarts they discovered the shard. At the same time Gla’aki made his attempt on seizing and destroying the crystal. The attempt proved unsuccessful and the being was driven off. Founder have won, but did they? What is couple of hundreds of years of waiting for a being that dwelled on this planet before humanity evolved from apes?

After this, Slytherin have build his famed Chamber of Secrets behind which, the shard rested. He also put a basilisk to guard it, especially against the undead servants of Gla’aki, which the basilisk could easily spot and check.

This coupled with other reasons drove the final nail in the coffin in which the spirit of cooperation and trust lied down. Slytherin left Hogwarts, life continued on, and the incident with the mysterious being that emerged from the lake was in time quietly forgotten.

Anyway, what is the plot bunny? After second year, when Harry slew the basilisk he inadvertently destroyed the one thing that could stop the servants of Gla’aki from performing their masters biding. Gla’aki wasn’t idle in his time after his last attempt at Hogwarts. In the long time that passed his cult was successful in almost completely freeing their master from his earthly prison. Only one more shard remains that Gla’aki need to destroy to be free once again. That shard lies in Hogwarts, beyond the Chambers of Secrets and the corpses of the guardian slayed by Harry Potter.

Gla’aki has once more settled his eyes on Hogwarts. The appearance of dementors proved to be a boon for his machinations. The strange dreams and nightmares about dying Forbidden Forest, strange happenings at Hogwarts or the murky and dark reaches of the lake are chalked under the dementors influence.

In some time, during on night, one of the students or maybe one of the people living in Hogsmead would venture to the lake, where he would be changed into the undead servant of Gla’aki and sent on a mission to infiltrate and discover the location of the shard – his master knowing only that it is somewhere underground.

Luckily for Harry, his status as a Horcrux and his mental link to Voldemort prove to be a boon and he is immune to the dream call of Gla’aki. On the other hand Voldemort is not so lucky as all of this dreams are sent to his mind.
