Ugh. I still want to actually write for real a fic I started a while while back - plot bunny being that in a last ditch effort to destroy voldemort, Harry (who with help from others/Hermione) has discovered a link between the Trace and wizard's ability to tap into magic in the world, and in the final battle, when all else has failed, he finds a way to use that knowledge to destroy the trace and thus everyone's ability to tap into magic. Leaving everyone as, essentially, a muggle. The wizarding world basically shatters, and for years they're left trying to pick up the pieces as Harry flees the country.

Years later Harry returns after having spent his time scouring the globe trying to find a clue as to how he might set things right, to no avail. He makes his way to Hogwarts, which still stands, and finally into the Chamber of Secrets, the path to which he finds open. There, he runs into the rapidly aging, near-death Tom Riddle. There, the two of them begin working together to find a way to restore magic to the people, all the while Harry knows that if he's successful, he'll be returning Voldemort's power as well.

That was a terribly written summary/plot idea that I started on, but stalled. Now I'm posting about it with hopes that potentially it'll inspire me to start on it again.

Sounds like an interesting idea- though I think there's probably a better/more plausible way to destroy everyone's magic than by exploiting the trace. That being said, its not like I have a better idea.

Also, fuck it, I've started writing the bounty hunter thing. I gotta start somewhere, and I'll rewrite it once become better at writing.

Despite the threat of Voldemort and his Death Eaters casting a pall over life in Britain, Rubeus Hagrid enjoys his life as Hogwarts' Keeper of the Keys. He might not be a great wizard like Albus Dumbledore or those flash young lads James Potter and Frank Longbottom and their friends in the Order, but he does his part. He maintains the grounds, watches the Forest and keeps the secrets the Headmaster needs him to. It isn't much, but it makes him proud. Makes him feel like a part of a world that tried to cast him out on the word of a monster in the making.

Then, the bad times. Voldemort becomes He Who Must Not Be Named. The Prewett twins are ambushed and killed. The McKinnons die horribly at the wand of the Dark Lord himself. Peter Pettigrew disappears without a trace. Sirius Black is abducted and tortured nearly into insanity until he is rescued by Albus Dumbledore himself. They are losing the war.

He used to greet these young witches and wizards on their way to class. He covered for the McKinnons when they thought the Forest would make a good place for a tryst. He gave Peter Pettigrew surreptitious help on a Magical Creatures assignment. Sirius Black came to him for aid in purchasing a motorcycle from the muggles. The Prewett brothers once helped him remove a jinx placed on his gardens by a group of bullying Slytherins.

Hagrid begins to know anger. He knows that many of those bullying Slytherins grew up to don silver masks. They dismiss him as dimwitted, but he knows their faces. He knows their names. He knows where they shop. His giant blood is roused. He dons his coat, the one that allows him to walk the Forbidden Forest under the full moon without fear. He picks up his crossbow, the one that was enchanted by Albus Dumbledore. He grasps his axe, the one made of cold iron that all but a few mistake for a garden tool.

Rubeus Hagrid is wroth. The Death Eaters will know fear. The Death Eaters will know pain. The Death Eaters will know death.

That's not what this story would be about. It would be about enchanted bolts bolting heads to the wall and an axe, swung by a half giant, splitting skulls.

That could work, Riddle is an amazing person to have as a POV. Just look at Rectifier or your own White Wizard.

    From PS:

What if that was indeed the case?

Imagine an AU in which spells are not pretty light shows, but instead rely strongly on sound.

Incantations would have to be properly intoned, even more than in canon, while wand movements would be replaced by melodies created by the wand. Basically, to cast a spell you have to play and sing it.

Moving a wand would create musical notes and in order to cast a spell you'd have to have a very good sense of rhythm. A good singing voice would help too.

Imagine a scene where a Death Eater disguises his wand as a violin and plays it on a street full of muggles, only for the song turn out to be the Cruciatus.

Or how about the Sorting Hat's annual song is actually useful, being a complicated spell to determine which house you belong to?

There are so many possibilities! Spells like the cheering charm could be upbeat and funny melodies while things like the Killing Curse could be gloomy and sad. Something like the Patronus could be an uplifting and inspiring musical creation.

Even Potions could require certain musical notes to be played during their creation.

The Killing Curse Song should radiate hate, violence and death, it's the killing curse, after all.

I never saw the Killing Curse as violent. It doesn't destroy bodies, there's no blood or actual damage involved. Just death. And death is a pretty sad state of affairs.

I was considering the same concept for some time, but to use it to its full potential you need audio, not just a text. A musical would be great, with the characters additionally having their own styles of music/magic. Both Voldemort and Dumbledore's magic could sound like a classic orchestra though the Dark Lord should have more menacing undertones to it (choirs and a pipe organ?). Sirius and his generation could be a rock music, while Harry and his would be more pop like.

Musical/magical duels could be really awesome if done right.

This may seem like a bit of a non-sequitur, but Scott Pilgrim vs the World, anyone? It'd be a difficult prospect to write, though, because it would require students to be proficient at instruments as well as magic.

Unless they use their wand, like a conductor. Sound is, after all, vibrations. Can be done by magic.

Ain't those the emotions you need for the killing curse to work?

No, the Killing Curse doesn't require any emotions for casting. Only the Cruciatus does.

"Non, rien de rien," sang Voldemort mournfully as his wand elegantly traced a trumpet march in the air, "non, je ne regrette rien."

Dumbledore's eyes widened in recognition of that refrain. Immediately his wand was forming a chaotic clash of noises in the air in the hope of disrupting Voldemort's spell-music yet beneath the grating chords was another, subtle and hidden. Quietly, so that his voice would remain below the level of his higher level auditory noise Dumbledore began to sing, "Tonight I'm gonna have myself a real good time..."

I've been rolling this idea about in my head for a while but this morning it finally jumped fully formed into my consciousness. It might happen, but it'll have to wait till the movie is released on DVD so I can re-watch it for character interpretations.

    Harry Potter/Interstellar Crossover.

The story starts in medias res. Harry has replaced Edmunds in the story and is on the planet named after Edmunds in the movie. Of course it's now Potter's planet.

We have a chapter of his daily (extremely boring) life alone on his planet as he waits for rescue. He knows his planet will work for colonisation and starts using magic to prepare it for such.

Throughout his time there we see dreams and memories of how he came to be there.

We see him take up the Mantle of Master of Death and become immortal and unaging.

We see another war between wizards, in this one the blight is unleashed upon the food crops of the world and the muggles are rapidly brought to their knees.

Though Harry wins the war it is decided by most wizards that muggle technological advancement is becoming too much of a threat to wizard-kind and so they begin to influence muggle lawmakers to stymie that advancement and slowly send the muggles backwards. This is made easier by the fact that the now serious unrest and food shortages are driving them in a similar direction.

Wizards realise how serious the blight is but cannot find a way of curing it now that it is so widespread. On an individual plant level they can fix it but across the entire planet? No chance.

Wizards lock themselves further away from muggles. Harry sees their plight and decides to help them.

He find NASA who are working on a plan to take humanity to the stars in the hope of finding new life. He joins up and his experience, knowledge and unwavering morals see him become, in Brand's words, "the best of us."

Insert slow burn romance between Harry and Brand here.

Finally it gets to the point where he is sent into space to scout out the planets around Gargantua.

Throughout this back-story we see more brief scenes from Harry's long solitude. A descent into a pit of despair and loneliness only kept sane by his fond memories of Brand and their brief stolen moments together.

Once the back-story catches up it's revealed that the back-story took 80 years to unfold, the same amount of time he has now been alone on the planet. He realises that by now Brand is most likely dead, Humanity too, and he's utterly alone in the universe.

Finally a ship appears in the sky and descends to the settlement he prepared in his years of exile.

Brand steps from the opening door. She looks exactly like he remembers her.

Then the epilogue happens and it's Harry, still youthful and healthy sitting by the bed of a wizened old woman. After a bitter-sweet talk about the last 80 years she finally slips off. "Goodbye Amelia."

And now Harry is alone again.

Ok, I'm going to go slit my wrists now. Perhaps even run the three time-lines side-by-side. Pre-mission, during mission and after-mission. Two end with "Goodbye Amelia.", while the middle ends with "Hi Harry."

Wait, I'm confused. There are five magic rings, but only four people get them?
