Honestly, as a fandom, Naruto desperately needs more politically oriented stories. The setting itself is designed for it, and yet it seems like all we get are "Konoha Goes to War", poorly written stalker romance, and training arcs.

I would really like to see something where the entire plot is about Naruto having to leave Konoha to avoid war, I assume with Hidden Stone or Hidden Cloud. The traditional reason is for Naruto's Parentage coming out- but that's corny as all hell. Maybe Akasuki is using Stone to force Naruto out of hiding, or maybe Lightning is trying to make another power play, or hell, Konoha managed cause a clusterfuck during a Chunin exam. Whatever it is, one of the stipulations for peace is the disarming of Konoha's Jinchuriki- drawing the rather obvious comparison between Demon Hosts and modern day nuclear politics.

I'm envisioning Naruto's death being faked as a plan to wiggle out of handing him over to another village, and Naruto has to go into hiding from a very young age- this would be an awesome way to set up an entry into ROOT, but that's not an angle I enjoy writing. If I go through with this, I would probably give Naruto a mentor or a handler.

Now, he's not exiled and the village is still keeping tabs on him. He's a "black asset", a soldier that's never listed on any roster, whose actions are disavowed, whose deeds of valor go unsung, and who must remain anonymous for all of his days.

Then of course, someone finds out. Plot.

Actually, now that I read that over again, the way to make it work is for one of Konoha's genin killing a prominent son/daughter of a powerful clan in Sand during the finals of a Chunin exam, right in front of the potential clients. Sand threatens war with Konoha, but over several weeks a treaty is ironed out- one of the clauses amounts to a trade of Jinchuriki. Sand basically rigs up Gaara as a weapon of mass destruction set to release the Shukaku into the heart of Konoha, and Konoha fakes Naruto's death the day after the treaty is signed. There is much gnashing of teeth and rattling of sabers, but Sand agrees to receive Naruto's "corpse" (specially prepared by Tsunade, as one last favor for Jiraiya) in his stead. Gaara is delivered, and Jiraiya barely manages to keep the One Tail from breaking free.

During this, Naruto is basically being held in a bunker, guarded 24/7, and left to his own devices. Then they give him the choice: Be a ninja, but as an Unknown Soldier (Naruto will never be a Hokage), or have a complete new identity and live an unremarkable civilian life while constantly being watched over by ANBU.

Smallville total AU where he lands in Britain in 1923. He's discovered by the British government, manipulated and used to win the war and then commit atrocities. The story would be a character-driven drama, not an action story, and would be broadly something of a redemption story and/or him finding his own path in life, leaving Britain behind.

Bear with me here, this might take a bit. While reading another Naruto story, with their endless descriptions of costume changes, I had the image of Naruto wearing a tiger stripe (of course, orange) football jersey, or soccer for you heathens.

Now this provoked an idea for a fic based around Naruto basically growing up playing soccer, there being a competition in Konoha made up of clubs for each district or something. Each team is made up of low level ninja, mostly genin and some chunin. The rules of ninja soccer is basically the same as regular soccer, except players are allowed to use chakra to enhance speed and agility, as well as moulding it in order to move the ball. If they kick the ball hard enough to break it or lose it, they're sent off. No jutsu or weapons or seals allowed though.

Naruto, as a kid, likes the team with the orange jerseys and goes for them. He becomes a kind of mascot, helping the team out with cleaning and becoming a ball boy. So instead of being a prankster, he starts to learn how to play soccer. Also, he gets to know a couple ninja, who can either be OCs, or probably just some more minor canon characters. Naruto does learn how to use chakra a bit better, but no lol!hax chakra control. He can learn stuff like the tree walking easier, but no Sakura style instant wins.

After he passes his genin exam, he joins the team, since you need to be a genin in order to register. He plays defence, since he can run a lot, and kick pretty well. Also, hes not skillful enough for any other position. He isn't very good, but he has fun, and does his job well enough. By the time of the chunin exams, hes getting pretty good. He has to stop for the exams, but afterwards he returns. Before the Tsunade arc, he fills in for a midfielder, and finally pulls off a move that lets him score and be the hero (I'm thinking he pulls the ball in a circle around his foot using chakra, while running, while brushing it against a defenders foot, having to keep his own chakra stable through the other guys interference, and then push off the defender's wasted chakra to get a boost).

It would only be a couple of chapters, maybe five or six, each focused on the soccer games and team, mentioning the events in his life as peripheral to his journey to become a good player. The first would be while hes young, where he is initially taken in by the team. The second would be where he begins to actually learn how to play. the third, when he finally becomes a genin, and tries out for the team, but fails. Four, when he finally makes it, after the Zabuza fight. Five, where he finally scores and maybe an epilogue.

There wouldn't be much deep meaning or political machinations going on (sorry) but it would be a pretty entertaining look at a possible AU of the Naruto world and some interesting developments interspersed with some fun games of football. I'd keep it light for the most part, with a fair bit of humour from the players, who would be not very important, but each given a bit of time with Naruto, a couple per chapter in order to develop them a little further.

Edit: Sorry for the massive post, but I'm pretty excited about writing this, and it all just came out. Any advice or ideas would be very welcome.

That might work best as a really long one-shot, rather than a multichaptered fic. It's an interesting idea though, especially if you could throw some more character interaction in there and give us a look at the 'behind the scenes' of things.

You'd have to nail the actual matches though, otherwise it'd fall a little flat.

    I'd read it.

It would be a great way to make Naruto more competent, but the OCS would be difficult to make, a lot of people were prejudiced about the Kyuubi, so you would have to develop reasons why the OCS aren't. But it does sound good.

Iruka would obviously be the team captain, who dislikes Naruto at first and doesn't want him around, but then letting him be captain after he sees Naruto is a good kid. An amusing idea, reminiscent of (the awesome) Shaolin Soccer movie.

Why bring Iruka into it? We already know how things go from him seeing Naruto as Kyuubi to eventually accepting and then looking out for him. If you're going to just reprise everyone's roles in a different setting, you might as well just go write a highschool!Naruto fic.

    Please don't.

Grab some lesser known characters or go an OC if you feel up to it, just give us some character interaction that hasn't been done to death. You might try having the captain as someone who doesn't know of the Kyuubi and doesn't really mind Naruto, but then next few senior-most players do know about it and belong to the 'Naruto-is-Kyuubi', 'train-him-as-weapon' or 'Naruto-isn't-Kyuubi' schools of thought. Fresh conflict is good, especially as you could look at changing perspectives as Naruto endears himself to the village.

As an aside, Berkeley said that the teams would all be genin and chuunin so it wouldn't get too out of hand? Small snippet at the end with Naruto as uber-skilled ninja who still hasn't been promoted.

Yeah, really wasn't planning on including Iruka or any major characters except for cameos if I can help it. Also, one of my aims for this story would be to avoid the cliche of leveling Naruto just for the sake of it. Though he enjoys playing football and it complements his skills, there is no way Naruto will become uber by simply playing a sport.

Yeah, that'd be a quick way to ruin the story. To clarify, I meant after he'd offed the Akatsuki and was still a genin, show up for a game to the dismay of the opposing team.

Ahkay, my bad. Just so sick of every fic having to do that.

And yeah, sounds pretty funny for an omake kinda deal, but in my fic, I'd probably play like his now ridiculous amount of chakra immediately explodes the ball and he gets sent off, complete anti-climax.

Playing Skyrim with Firefly in the background, and a thought occured to me.

Firefly/Skyrim crossover, with Malcolm Reynolds hearing of the Skyrim Companions and mistaking them for escorts, much to their ire. Potential for much amusement.

Random plot bunny I feel like sharing, or maybe writing. Need holes fleshed out though.

Naruto/Death Note X-over (Ew already, right?)

Story starts out with Light in Naruto's universe. How this happens, I don't know. But should be kept as vague as possible. One way or another, he eventually regains his Death Note, although no Shinigami will be around. He will be in Konoha if the author is lazy, although I feel Mist or Rain would be a better choice. Light will live with a civilian world, and eventually understand how despicable the Shinobi system is (killing, war, oppressing civilians, etc). Thus begins the "cleansing"

Naturally, Light realizes Shinobi are the foundations and police force of the Elemental Countries. It would not work out if he simply kills every single ninja, lest the world falls into chaos. He starts out by killing missing-nins, probably by use of a Bingo book. (The problem is how he would obtain one, as he would not be able to become a ninja or use chakra. Maybe through the controlling function of the Death Note before someone dies). Using the Death Note, he would then kill every single missing-nin in the Bingo book to announce his presence. Personally, I am thinking many S-Class villians will survive. For example, Orochimaru has a different face now due to his body swapping technique. Sasori's picture is just a puppet. Kakuzu may only lose one heart, or will lose all five but Jiongu saves him by taking in another heart right before his dies. Itachi and Kisame might be screwed, but someone else may be able to come up with an explanation :p Either way, most missing-nins will die and it would attract attention of all 5 great nations.

The next targets will be the Anbu of each country. Obtaining their files would be significantly harder. I'm thinking in order to do so, Light will have to slowly manipulate ninjas higher and higher rank (Genin to Jounin). Of course, in order to manipulate these people, he would have to use the Death Note and so they will end up dieing, just not on the scale of the initial missing-nin killing. This would be the point where oppositions would start to get clues on the culprit maybe, or at the very least HOW he can kill people.

Light's Final Goal: Destruction of the Shinobi System

Hmm, sounds decent, but wouldn't it be better to forget Light and just give the Death Note to a Narutoverse person instead? Perhaps one of the civilians that showed up occasionally, or a ninja with little in the way of talent and a lot in the way of brains?

I like it. Especially the part with Light being a simple human instead a ninja. It makes things more interesting. Not to mention that Tobi makes a perfect ultimate rival for him in place of L - man without a name or even a face. Kakashi too would be a dangerous enemy since getting to see his face is almost impossible.

Naruto would also be dangerous as IMHO his real name would be Namikaze as that is his father. I don't remember if Canon stated Minato married Kushina though. Or if Naruto would still just be Uzumaki as that is his clans name.

The funny crack idea I had for that is he didn't have a proper picture :p But yeah, with the Uzumaki or Namikaze, it's just whatever the author chooses really.

I'm personally still playing with the idea of a Shinigami being there, but the one from Naruto verse. Unsure how that would play out.

Naruto plot bunny that popped into my mind the other day:

The second Hokage doesn't just give the Hyuuga the caged bird seal. He also gives it to the Daimyo of Fire Country as a token of good will to be used on prisoners and the like.

The Daimyo promptly arms his samurai with the seal and sends them out to mark every shinobi in Fire Country. Other countries get a hold of the seal and soon every shinobi in the world is marked with the caged bird seal. The position of kage becomes a mere figurehead as Daimyo's seize complete control.

Fast forward to Naruto's chunin exam. He meets Jiraiya, who wipes the caged bird seal from his forehead.

Cue introduction to rebel forces, featuring prominent seal masters like Jiraiya, Orochimaru, and Chiyo capable of removing the caged bird seal as well as shinobi competent enough to be a help in their efforts and the majority, if not all of the Bijuu containers.

From there the story would probably cover the efforts of Naruto and the rebels to take down the Daimyos and wipe out the caged bird seal completely. Whether or not they succeed is for you to decide.
