The first thing that came to ind upon reading this was the movie "Predator," and the second thing was the original movie of "The Thing."

Both could be twisted into an amazing, and amazingly gritty fanfic.

About the uber-strike-force team of Aurors: I would also have them utterly fail. Not that they don't get a few licks in, but ultimately are destroyed by the villain that canon!Voldemort *should* have been. We saw flashes of it with his casual use of awesome magic at the end of GoF, and in his fight with Dumbledore in OotP, but that's about it.

About Calvin & Hobbes: My favorite C&H fanfic is Reminiscence by Kenya Starflight. Not a crossover at all, but exceptionally well done.

From the Aspects which Brighten Your Day thread, I present RiverTam-esque!Luna. Sort of.

After years of hard fighting in the mirky underworld of Magical Britain, aware that the Unspeakables are subjecting her to prolonged magical experimentation, Xenophilius Lovegood finally succeeds in breaking out his wife Miranda from the Department of Mysteries. A desperate and injured couple on the run, Xenophilius has no other option than to hide his fugitive wife at Hogwarts under the guise of quirky, quiet 'Luna', the daughter they've always dreamed of.

While Xeno's on the run, or 'hunting for Snorkacks', desperately trying to find a cure for his wife in the world's most tempestuous magical locations with the Department of Mysteries' special forces on his tail every step of the way, 'Loony' Lovegood begins to come into an awareness of her surroundings, the magical indoctrination she suffered at the hands of the Unspeakables peering through at the cracks, and though her father knew she'd at least be slightly safer hidden at Hogwarts School, assuming she'd keep her head down, he'd discounted the fact that she was... really quite the extraordinary witch.

So the idea is simple; we have Luna's early time at Hogwarts, tying into the Golden Trio's canon storylines but with her own adventuring taking place, maybe veering into AU territory, maybe not (at first), but have the struggle of someone who really does believe she's a young girl who has just lost her mother in an explosion in the foreground. She isn't quite sure who she is, why her memory's so bad, and so on, and is thrust into a strange world in this state to grow into a witch. In Chamber of Secrets year, no less, too.

I don't think the addition of a Simon character would be entirely necessary, but it could go either way. Or Harry could be / become the fraternal figure who attempts to protect her. However, throughout this, we have the River-ish Luna indulging in the occasional little 'episode' wherein she suddenly, inexplicably, kicks all shades of hell out of allcomers. Perhaps it's only once or twice, she doesn't remember it, and it's all very obscure, until one day she feels threatened - or hears a 'code word', is hit by accident with an activating spell, or w/e - and goes all Rambo on her classmates in the great hall.

How exactly you want to handle her is up to you - you could skip out the prologue and start the story in the DoM in fifth year, or just before, with her 'activating' there, and reveal the backstory via good old-fashioned storytelling. Or maybe the AU verge happens in her first year, but she's taken down to the chamber instead of Ginny. Parallel to all of this, whichever way it goes, you have Xenophilius' adventure around the magical world, leading a double life in front of the public, being hunted in secret, not sure who to trust, etc, to balance out the action in the story until a merge later on.

Could give us a competent if massively confused Harry/Luna story. Or not. But fuck it - I think it could be a completely insane, ridiculously epic adventure story, and as much as it's an open bunny, I'm outright challenging someone to write it.

Give us Luna Tam. Give it now.

Something about the way you wrote that plot bunny had me entirely juiced up. Seriously, by the end the only thought in my head was, "fuck yeah."

I'd try my hand at this, but my time is already stretched way too thin. Plus, I don't know enough about firefly to really pull it off.

Someone should definitely take a stab at this though.

-Might want to change it from Xeno's wife to, say, some other young orphan girl he found when trying to uncover the mystery behind his wife's disappearance (i.e. Mrs. Lovegood can really be dead, or not; she can be the final, thoroughly brainwashed boss/operative of the DoM).

-Xeno blackmailed Dumbledore into adding the name of "Luna" into the Hogwarts books, by threatening to reveal his connection to the Rotfangs.

Does anyone think a Harry Potter and Phineas and Ferb crossover would work? I got the idea stuck in my head when I read the challenge for August/September with Harry the Hufflepuff taking over the role of Perry the Platypus. "He's a Hufflepuff; they don't do much." I was thinking maybe having Fred and George building insane objects. Snape would most likely make the best Doofenshmirtz just because it would be very easy to give him hilariously tragic back stories.

It's just a random thought that has been stuck in my head over the past few days. I have doubts that it would work. Just thought I'd throw it out there.

That's more of a fusion than a crossover.

    But I'd read it.

Just watched the last movie. Grey Lady characterization was :awesome. Thinking of a plot involving these two and time travel.

I've spent today thinking about a plot bunny with a Ravenclaw!Harry. Harry wouldn't be obsessed with learning magic and spells but he would be fairly intelligent. I was thinking that in terms of grades he would be at the level of Canon!Harry but he'd enjoy solving mysteries.

At the start Harry wouldn't be much of a detective because he's 11 but as years go by he actually does become really competent. While it would be easy to have him solve the Philosopher's stone plot and thwart Quirrel's plan, I would rather see him solving some new "nefarious" plots for the first two years. So the first two years would be fairly lighthearted as would the majority of third year but it could grow slowly darker after the Sirius case. Maybe have him find out or prove Sirius' innocence too late and Sirius is kissed prompting Harry to take the whole detective thing more seriously.

I may have been affected by the Harry/Luna thread but I think it would be pretty cool to have Luna solving the "cases" with him from second year onwards. I like Luna.

The main thing about Harry would be that he isn't some kind of databank who remembers every single thing he's read or that he spends his time cooped in the library, but being able to deduct things from clues with some luck and logic.

I suck at writing so I'm just throwing this out here hoping that somebody decides to pick it up maybe for the August+September contest or something. Just saying.

33-year-old Captain Dumbledore WTFPWNZ Germans on the Marne

    Arc 1: The Great War

January, 1915: Albus Dumbledore is thirty-four years old. War broke out shortly after his birthday in July of the previous year. As the closest fighting occurred on the so-called “Western Front” between France and Germany, and the Eastern Front was too far to care about, the British Wizarding World saw no reason to participate… at first.

However, Dumbledore began picking up hints, and later fairly plain evidence that his old friend was doing his damnedst to pull the Wizarding world in general into this already-massive Gordian Knot of totally failed human spirit.

Once his suspicions were confirmed, Dumbledore makes a failed attempt to convince the British Magical government to get involved (“What do we care if a bunch of stupid muggles slaughter one another?”).

He gather’s around him a number of patriotic muggleborns and they all agree to join the muggle army and use their magic in secret to help sway the war in Britain’s favor (and also to ensure that the muggle military keeps them together under Dumbledore’s command).

December, 1915: Captain Dumbledore and his muggleborn men charged over the hill, shileds already cast upon themselves and their muggle comrades. The fighting was fierce and Dumbledore put out of his head the thought of mayhem his men were causing. German bullets seemed to bounce off air, whilst British bullets seemed to hit their mark with uncanny frequency.

December 24, 1915: the Major had ordered an artillery barrage all morning, and another charge in order to help discourage any of that “Christmas Truce Nonsense from last year!”

Suddenly men were dying. Dumbldore’s men. In HIS battalion, were dying. Then he noticed. That golden hair tied in a ponytail under an officer’s cap. The triangle of the Deathly Hallows. Those blue eyes, which he swore he could see across No Man’s Land, punctuating a psychotic smirk. Hauptmann (1) Grindelwald had been transferred in, and no doubt with a battalion of his own fighting wizards.

No, there would be no Joyeaux Noel tonight. No, but there would be one hell of a light-show, though. That night, the statue of secrecy merrily fucked itself as two battalions of mages abandoned any pretense of using magic to enhance a muggle war, and just began slinging curses and other impressive spells.

November, 1918: The war was over. Major Dumbledore stared into the cold eyes of now-Generaloberst (2) Grindelwald. Dumbledore had an idea that, to his former friend, this was merely the beginning. To Dumbledore, however, this was the end of war. He would go be a school teacher, or maybe a healer, but he’d had enough of War . . . (3)

    End of Arc 1.

Arc 2 would deal with Grindelwald's rise to power over Magical Germany, and his plunging the Wizarding World head on into Muggle Germany's War.

Arc 3 would be Dumbledore taking a completely unprepared Wizarding Britain and shaping it's capable fighters into a proper wizarding army to fight off Grindelwald's forces, and Grindelwald's eventual defeat at Dumbledore's hands.

    (1) Hauptmann = Captain
    (2) Generaloberst = General (in the USA, this would be a 4-star)
    (3) Well, up until he had to fight in, or prosecute three more before he died . . .

A great idea, though for a moment I thought it will be Captain America/HP fusion (or whatever it's called), because recently I'm playing with a possibility of one (without much success).

Anyway, any fic showing involvement of wizards in WWI and WWII has so much potential for awesomeness that it's wonder why we rarely see one or even just flashbacks in modern time stories.

I could actually see an HP/Captain America fusion working, though until just now I never would have thought of that. I don't know how, but for some reason it sounds plausible. Fuck if I know why, though.

I think the reason you don't see many WWII and almost no WWI fics is that fanfiction authors realize very quickly how little they know about the cultural - and more importantly, technological - state of those times.

I've seen a few WWII fics, most notably DobbyElfLord's excellent Altered Destinies. I think the reason there are as many WWII fics as there are is attributable directly to things like The History Channel and its emphasis on WWII in general and the Nazis in particular. [I should also mention that enembee's The Skitterleap read, to me, like a modern-day version of a WWII story, with its AU-ness stemming from an altered outcome to that war.]

World War I, though, is another animal entirely. The technology was even more rudimentary, the clusterfuck of motivations, allies and enemies - what Rin calls a "Gordian Knot of totally failed human spirit" - is difficult to grasp and utilize, and the fact it was so damn long ago all combine to make authors stay away.

I could see a one-shot involving one or at most a few wizards and their experiences in WWI, but a longer story would be exceedingly difficult, in my opinion.

I've always been interested in seeing a WWII fic with wizards as well. Something utilizing Hitler and his obsession with the occult (as was done in the first Hellboy movie). That would be a good way to draw wizards into the war - to even the playing field.

A side dish may be the plight of those Muggleborns, who faced pressure from the mostly pureblood Wizarding society because they fought in the Muggle war in blatant disregard of the Statue of Secrecy.
This can be during the interwar years, especially during the period of economic depression; the Muggleborn soldiers (or Muggleborns in general) couldn't find gainful employment in either world and grew bitter.

The Thule Society, an occult organization of Muggleborn wizards and Muggles with a shared interest in making a stronger Germany, assist Adolf Hitler in his rise to political power in the Weimar Republic in 1933. Upon election as chancellor, Hitler returns the favor by supplying the Society with money and other forms of assistance in furthering their research in advanced magic and lost magical artifacts, including the Deathly Hallows.

At the same time, Gellert Grindelwald is gaining influence and power throughout Eastern Europe. Having already acquired the Elder Wand from Gregowitch, Grindelwald sees the rising power of Hitler and the Thule Society as a threat to his own objectives, and resolves to destroy them at all costs. Realizing that the only way to accomplish this is through war, Grindelwald uses the Imperio curse on numerous French and British politicians to ensure that they do not strike out at Hitler's increasingly audacious actions that go against the Versailles Treaty. When Hitler begins to show his interest in Poland, Grindelwald removes his hold over the English and French politicians. Within the month, World War Two has begun, and Grindelwald begins his personal war against the Thule Society.

In England, Albus Dumbledore is the Professor of Transfiguration at Hogwarts, and is doing his absolute best to move past the tragedies of his youth. Although he occasionally hears bits and pieces of news about what his old friend is doing in Eastern Europe, and of the rising power of the Thule Society in Germany, Dumbledore does nothing. He is afraid of conflict, worried that those close to him will once again suffer for his hubris. He has found solace, however, in overseeing the education of young witches and wizards, especially in a young Slyttherin Half-blood named Tom Riddle. However Dumbledore can not stay on his haunches forever. The storm cloud growing over mainland Europe is beginning to stretch itself over the British Empire, and the man touted as the "strongest wizard alive" will have to take action soon if he hopes to protect his home and the students that he has dedicated his life to.

    Thoughts?
