Umm... magic fucks tech up; In particular: electricity. Which is required for circuitry to function.

Any defense against that, is entirely up to an author's discretion, since, afaik there is no canon defense against that.

Besides which, terminators are non-living beings, which always seemed much easier for one to enforce their magic upon than living beings; particularly in transfiguration. Ditto for similar objects (the first bit of transfiguration is matchstick to needle, afterall). Transfigure or charm the exoskeleton's joints/points-of-movement together = neutered.

It could be interesting, I think, if the apocalypse in some way greatly weakened magic. The utter devastation of life/the-planet, weakening/disrupting magic to the point where things were a bit more even. Magic users would still have better odds 1v1 against a terminator than your average joe, of course. It would necessitate a post-doomsday fic, probably, though.

Do you have a link? I've seen one or two attempts at a Fight Clubby HP fic, and they were terrible, but that, even if only a snippet sounds fairly awesome.

Nah, sorry, nothing really to link. But I can just throw out a bit here, from the snippet's opening...

Flashback ensues, as does hilarity. I wrote the snippet for a quick word count competition with Lutris and Vira - I only got 2500 out in the hour.

You know the funny thing? I already posted up vague ideas for a Terminator crossover, an Event Horizon crossover/fusion, and I'm pretty sure I already saw ideas for Fight Club and half of the other movies already mentioned in V2.

(This was in the original plot bunny thread, of course).

True that. But you know what movie fusion plot bunny we haven't see yet? Harry Potter/Rocky. :)

Young, semi-pro duelist Harry Potter is given an unexpected chance to to fight for the World Championship with undefended champion Tom Riddle. To prepare for the battle, Harry trains with a ex-champion and later in his life teacher at Hogwarts - Filius Flitwick.

I would read the shit out of that. If it were maybe ~50k words, and very, very action packed at the end. lol.

All this talk about crossovers have given me the idea to write a Harry Potter/The Stand crossover, I only have one problem: I don't know of a way to not butcher the concept.

I tell myself, "stop thinking up other plots and focus on your current ones", and then I think of something that I have to write. It's a bad habit.

Thankfully, for this one, all I have is a premise and not really a full plot.

It's an Indy Harry fic based in sixth year (which, for some reason, is my favourite year from HP to write fics about).

Anyway, starting from the scene where Harry finds Malfoy crying in the washroom, Malfoy tries to curse Harry before getting hit by Sectumsempra (which Harry casts unknowingly), like in canon. The change here comes in that Myrtle wasn't there to alert anyone, thus Snape doesn't arrive, resulting in Malfoy's death. Then, terrified of the consequences, Harry grabs his invisibility cloak / Hallow and runs away.

After that, it mainly becomes the general Indy Harry on the run, using the Hallow to avoid detection, trying to find a way to defeat Voldemort etc... which I don't like, so I'm not going to attempt this until I can actually come up with something a little more interesting.

    Thoughts?

Perhaps it can be a fic about Harry's descent into crime... armed with the Hallow, it'd be hard for him to be caught if he's clever about it.

Criminal!Harry armed with The Cloak is a good idea, but I'd like a better impetus.

@Knuckz: I see so much potential there.

Harry Potter starts a Revolution against the Capitalist Pigs at the Ministry.

Harry Potter goes to France and grl stlrz Fleur from Bill.

Harry Potter runs to the Shaolin Temple and learns the Magic Disrupting Tiger Fist, which is the Power He Knows Not.

Harry goes to Australia and adopts a new name. Steve Irwin.

Harry goes to New York and learns how to rap, And participates in the 1997 Rap Olympics under the name Marshall Mathers.

Harry goes to L.A., becomes a cop after a failed attempt at appearance change with a growth potion and attacks a guy called Rodney King.

    Dum shit aside...

He can literally do anything. Just don't turn it into Make A Wish.

Having been re-reading The Night's Dawn trilogy, the idea of the Light Brother sects intrigued me:
A 'ganf'/satanic cult, ran by the Government, although in secret, as a way of controlling crime and the masses with a big scary figure. Anyone truly dangerous dies by the hand of the sects

The basic premise (which is all I have), would be that either Fudge (who is actually a political genius, not an incompetent fool), the higher ups in general, or Dumbledore has created the Death Eaters to scare the population into submission. Voldemort is still a very real threat, but bound by unbreakable vows / whatever so that he can't betray his handler, although he has basically free reign.

Could be interesting in a good writer's hands - Dumbledore doesn't want Harry to win, but the ministry does (or vice versa). Unfortunately, I have no idea what else could be done with this, the idea just doesn't have much in it.

Something that's been bugging me for years, actually:

General Bunny: What if the Third Hallow wasn't Harry's Invisibility Cloak, but rather the Veil? I always thought that made more sense myself.

Why would it be the veil? The mythos of Harry's Hollow is that it hides the user from death.
Despite fanon, the veil IS death.

This is more a really messed up dream I had, than a proper plot bunny, but I felt like sharing all the same.

Nicolas Flamel is Happosai (of ranma 1/2 fame).

Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindewald were his apprentices prior to Soun and Genma. Flamel trained muggles mostly because the collosal fuck-up that was his last two apprentices was too much for even him to blissfully ignore, and he thought staying away from magical apprentices would be best for a time.

Enter cliche Indy Harry. So while Harry is whining like a little bitch about his life and how Dumbledore isn't preparing him for his destiny and ___ (insert various perceived slights), and how hard he's really got it, Dumbledore finally loses his cool.

insert complete and utter bitchslap of a rant from "Albus fucking Dumbledore to the snot-nosed little brat who doesn't know shit about shit, let alone magic, you little punk" etc...

Albus end his rant on a dime, and fast as you can blink returns to his usually kind/grandfatherly disposition. He smiles softly and asks, "So, you truly want me to train you, do you my boy?"

And just for a second, almost too fast for Harry to really be sure he saw it, he saw the most sadistic little grin on his Headmaster's lips, sending a shiver of pure dread down his spine, and making him wonder just why exactly Dumbledore was said to be the only wizard Voldemort ever feared.

Even so, still too stunned from being verbally decimated, Harry agreed to wanting training, before even beginning to question that feeling of dread. Thus he began the long and perilous (and cracky) journey that is Anything Goes Wizardry.

And he learned, first hand, just why Albus Dumbledore is, with as little as a breath freshening charm, so much fucking scarier than Voldemort and his Unforgivables any day of the week.

Okay, was reading the steam-punk thread and wondering if a steam-punk world could be pulled off or not. Then I had a dream. (I'm serious.) And this sprang from it.

New London, or Atlantis maybe, is the home of the Wizarding World. The island Metropolis is the center of the international wizarding world. Though the British are the preeminent ones living there, with various other European nations coming in next. The rest of the world is bitter of course. I'm imagining it a hold-over from the colonial times, with much of the wizarding world holding sway over the other continents. Basically, what would happen if the WW took up the call of colonialism.

However, those are the upper crust. The rich, the elite, etc. Those living under them are the squibs, trolls, goblins, free elves, etc. In this AU, those born without magic, squibs, far outnumber those born with. However, the elite are even divided between those of pure-blood and those of not. I'm thinking rich pure-bloods with half-bloods and muggle-borns being shop keepers, enchanters, etc. Upper class and middle class, then lower class.

At this point you insert the steam punk stuff for the 'proles,' lower class. Goblins have their own shit, or maybe they run the money(not sure), as well as elves. But the squibs, the working class work on making engines run on gubraithian fire. Wagons that move. Flying machines they use to reach the upper spires of the city, where the pure-bloods inhabit.

Versus this technology is the enchantments made by the middle class. Two competing sources of technology vying for control amid the lower classes and upper. Purebloods, distasteful of doing their own, rely on the muggle-borns and half-bloods to enchant a lot of their stuff, brooms, carpets, pots, etc. Some won't have muggle-borns do it. They would prefer the middle class not let their objects go to the lower class, trying to make laws banning such things to the proles, but the government is torn on the issue.

Those wanting all to have magic, lead by Dumbledore, and those opposed to this idea, Tom Riddle. Two camps that have been at each other's throats for decades. When Tom rose to power, being an Heir of Slytherin, he tried underhanded methods to win over the government. Ddore stale-mated him and a lot of backstabbing and shadowy deaths occurred. The blood-tole became too high and a kind of cold war went into effect.

Enter today's society, where a young Harry Potter, three years out of the Prestigious Hogwarts, is wrestling what to do with his life. He's a half-blood, so the upper-crust is not as welcome, but his namesake is a Potter, one of the oldest families and most respected. He is the only surviving member. He has relegated himself to being a Collector. Someone who goes out and collects on debts people have reneged on. When the person in question is seedy, he'll use muscle. When they're a starving family, he has in the past paid their debt for them. (He's not a heartless bastard.)

Enter a new collection, one Arthur Weasley. An under-the-weather pureblood family that has had its fortune tapped into the red over the past decades. Only Ddore's protection had kept them from falling too far. With political maneuvering Tom has managed to buy the family's debt and has through a third party, had Harry collect on it. (Harry is unaware of this.) Harry shows up at their dilapidated house to find it dark. Within he finds members of the family slaughtered. One of the twins, maybe Ginny for lulz, Molly, and most importantly Arthur.

Cue the Aurors coming to investigate a tip-off. Harry's just been framed for murder, one of Ddore's oldest friends has just been killed, and he seeks revenge. He knows it wasn't Harry, but Tom is hoping to send Ddore on a goose-chase, while he works other plots.

Harry goes on the run, pursued by the law, Ron, the surviving twin, Bill(a good friend of his), and others who are wanting to collect the bounty on Harry's head.

He disappears into the lower parts of the city and learns of troubling news. The Goblins are busy negotiating with the other beasts, trying to start a revolution. Beside that are a faction of the squibs, building colossal machines bent on tearing the city apart, using any means they can to brainwash and enslave various magic-wielders so they stand a chance of repelling any magical attacks. (Through potions most likely.)

Well, that's the story so far. Can go many ways from here and have just about any romance. Was thinking Fleur to be honest, maybe she ran a brothel and Harry sought shelter there. (Would be a different use of character and might make sense, since Veela are beasts, but have their sexual charms.)

I kind of like the setting, though it does stretch the universe quite a bit.

The problem is that the idea is SO AU, it could almost be an original fic. I'm not even sure what this gains from being set in the potterverse, as the differences will render quite afew of the characters unrecognizable.

If you made it original, it would still be awesome. Although I guess I'd still read it set in the AU, you'd have to be careful of avoiding huge piles of infodump on how your world differs from what we know, whilst not just dropping us into a complete unknown.

The thing about canon is that its great to have a base to work with, character names, some places, familiarity, a waiting audience. I find myself not liking sticking to canon and really branching out into AU. Where I can take that base and change it around, while on the surface things are the same for the reader, but deeper there are differences.

Not quite a complete crutch, but enough of one where I don't have to plan out ten different names and alliances when I can rely on existing ones. For Tom's camp, the usual. Ddore's the usual. It's also fun to mess with the characters, kind of like how emb did the twins in the Skitterleap.

That said, I had considered making this an original, but have already got a few ideas running in my head. Actually, waiting on GL's response because I accepted his challenge.

I started to write a PlotBunny but then I decided to ask in the "story search" thread if anything resembling my ideas/questions has been written about already.

It's a good idea, but my main problem with that is how easy it is to prove that you didn't kill anybody. There's no reason for Harry to run - it's almost certain that Dumbledore will be able to get him a fair trial. Any other result is just coming from the Idiot Ball, and that's bad.

It was the first thing that came to mind when I read the explanation of the Hallows: associated with death, cloth-like, and eeriely powerful. Having it be Harry's Cloak seemed like far too much of a cop-out, seeing how everyone and their mother seemed to be able to see through that cloak.

As for the myths...to quote Gargoyles, have all things be true, but few accurate. It's just a plot bunny that I wish I could write, but lack the talent or further inspiration to build off of.
