Recently I’ve been introduced to the Naruto anime and related fanfiction. Admittedly, I was only ever curious about the anime because of a crossover with HP, but it happened. Now as I’ve become more familiar with the series I’ve also taken a look at the Naruto thread here at DLP. I was interested in a lot of the comments people made about the problems with a HP/Naruto crossover, and that unfortunately lead to a new plot bunny.

Please keep in mind that I’m not fully versed in the Naruto universe, nor am I an expert on Japanese mythology. Also, I’m not entirely certain about the information I’ve found about Naruto’s actual relation to Arashi being fanon or canon. Hopefully someone else might know.

Oh, and I’ll admit it’s a little cheesy, but hey…we are talking about an HP/Anime crossover.

Ok, the basic back-story for the fic is this:

Harry survived the killing curse because his parents had created what they believed to be a rune-based protective magic based on notes found in an ancient scroll at Hogwarts. James and Lily both sacrificed themselves to activate the magic which then became a passive protection until Harry’s life was threatened.

When Voldemort cast the killing curse the protection became active, but not the way intended. The Potters had mistranslated the scroll. The protection attempted to seal away Voldemort’s soul within the chosen container – Harry.

That’s when three complications occurred. The first were Voldemort’s own protections from death. The second was the existence of two sacrifices. The third, and most unexpected, was the timing of the second sacrifice as it coincided with another person sacrificing himself to create a similar seal.

A portion of Voldemort’s soul was sealed within Harry before the rest fled, thus creating his link but nothing else.

The second sacrifice still attempted to seal away a soul. The sealing magics had created a link between Harry, Lily’s sacrificial seal, the magical essence of death, and the soul of another who had just used the same magic. Thus, the magic of Lily’s seal grabbed the loose soul and sealed it into Harry. It is later discovered that the 2nd soul was actually that of the Yondaime Hokage who had sacrificed himself to seal away the Kyūbi no Yōkō.

Think of it like a triangle. You have Harry at one corner and Arashi’s soul at the other. The top of the triangle is “death”. When Lily’s sacrifice goes into effect it creates the lines that connect all three. Rather than Arashi’s soul traveling up to Death’s point on the triangle, it traveled across to Harry’s and was sealed.

Now, how does this affect the HP story? Well I don’t want to see Harry go totally ninja, but I don’t want him to be totally wizard either. The plot bunny I’ve got has Harry working with the sealed Arashi to find a way of melding Shinobi magic (ninjutsu/ginjutsu) with wizard magic.

The way I’m imaging it is that the Shinobi magic is actually far harder than wizard magic, and thus more limited in scope. The reason of this is that Chakra is the combination of both physical and “spiritual” energy (a.k.a. both Ki and Chi). Magic is only half of that, the “spiritual” energy and thus easier to mold and focus especially with a wand. At the same time, trying to perform wizard magic using Chakra makes it far too powerful, and thus unstable – for the most part.

I’d imagine that the story would start out in the HP-verse. Shortly after getting to Hogwarts it’s discovered that Harry has some serious control issues due to his body trying to use Chakra rather than just magic. During the troll event Harry, not Ron, tries the levitation charm on the troll, but his normally crappy control is even worse due to the stress of the moment. The troll gets catapulted up several stories causing massive damage to the school, and Harry drops over near-dead from Chakra exhaustion. Just for fun, let’s also say Ron gets crushed under falling rubble.

While he’s passed out Harry meets Arashi.

Harry spends a week or two in the hospital and then gets chucked out of Hogwarts for being a danger to the other students and his inability to learn to control his magic. Lame, but since when does the HP-verse need good reasons for things? I’d imagine it mostly had to do with Dumbledore just not wanting to hear Molly screech at him.

Long story short (too late) Harry decides to go off on his own (to…somewhere) and works to try and master his unique abilities. Years later Dumbledore realizes he’s an idiot and seeks out Harry to save the idiot wizards asses.

So…not the most wonderfully fleshed out plot bunny, but there ya go. Grab it if ya want it.

This fails for two reasons. HP rarely works well with crossovers and never works with Naruto crossovers.

in my opinion this should have been put in the Challenges section. Either that or we should have a spot for Plotbunnies that are up for adoption (The Quibbler?) Somewhere on the site.
