Serebii lists the formes as having different base abilities in some cases. Lucario has adaptability and Mawile has huge power. But some of these don't look very evolved, really. Lucario/Blaziken/Ampharos just got some extra hair.

Don't think that's how it works. It doubles the attack stat. Level 100 Mawille has 295 attack with a +ATK nature, so Pure Power makes it 590. Still crazy, but it is slow.

Edit: Wait no, that's actually higher. Kyurem-B's max Attack with an Adamant nature is 482. So it's actually even more powerful than I first thought. Choice Scarf!Mawile get.

 

No, doubling Mawile's base attack to 170 wouldn't be the same as doubling the 295. Kyurem-B's base ATK is 170, and that comes out to 482 with a +ATK nature. Of course I could be wrong and it doubles the base, but doubling the base and the actual stat would be two different things.

 

It doubles the attack stat for calculations. So it's base+nature+IVs+EVs, all times two. I think Azumarill is top 5 highest attack because of huge power and its base is 50 to Mawile's 80 iirc.

 

Yeah, Churchey. Azumarril has 428 Attack maxed out, I think. Something like that, but Mawile actually has base 85 Attack. Even more stronf.

 

I believe a mega stone was mentioned somewhere. If it's a hold megastone, then it's just a form, but if it's a use-item, then it could be an evolution? I doubt it, GameFreak has never gone past three.

Also, Mawile's defenses are trash. His only notable stat is his attack, so his megaform has to give him quite a bit, besides more attack power, for him to actually be useful. Well, I guess Fairy typing does help a lot, but even so.

 

...but that's a risk you always run with Scarfed glass cannons. Your point's of no consequence at all.

 

Yeah but Mawile... scarfed? You couldn't outrun anything reasonably fast, you effectively has 75 base speed.

Also, a trailer was just revealed. It's a hold-item transformation that takes place upon switch-in.
