Clawitzer is pretty cool IMO

So here's my question, which I figure this is the best thread for. My girlfriend and I own four of the gen III games (just not emerald), both Gen II remakes, and Black and White, along with needing to complete Gen IV and V and get VI, I'm curious how the fuck if at all, we can trade our pokemon forward throughout our playthroughs? I'm still on LG and she's only 4 gyms into SS last I checked so it's not a huge deal but we want to maintain kickass giant rolling teams, and I want to apply kickass rolling teams to Nuzlocke as well, so how do we get FR and LG pokemon to SS and HG, then all those to R and S, and so on? what are the limitations other than no pokemon with helds/moves that are newer than the game they're going to? Is it even possible to roll all around like that or are we better off trading everything to VI once we have it and not trying to move back and forth between platforms and shit?

I figure someone must have knowledge of all this compatibility fuckery.

 

You need two DS systems (with one a 3DS and another with a DS that has a Gameboy slot) to get Pokemon from anywhere from Ruby or Saphire all the way to X and Y. There's also a way to get Coliseum and XD: Gale of Darkness, but that requires a game cube and GBA to GC link cable.

Anyway transfering from 3rd to 4th gen is explained here
and from 4th to 5th gen is explained here
5th to 6th will be with the use of your 3DS system and the Pokemon bank/Pokemon transfer application.

One of the biggest thing to remember is that Moving forward a generation of games ie. 3 to 4 to 5 to 6 Means you will never be able to return them to the previous generation.

And yes some hold items and moves are incompatible between games but that is usually from newer games in a generation to the first games in said generation.

 

Pretty sure starting with Gen III you can only transfer forward. You need a DS that also has a GBA slot at the bottom and use Gen4/5 in-game methods to move Pokes permanently to the next Gens. I'd say it's better to just transfer to Gen VI, but from what leakers are saying you might be limited to seven boxes in-game to force PokeBank. >_>

EDIT: And thus the problem with writing all this out on a Wii, double-ninja'd. Oi.

To be sure you two are aware of this, you can only trade Gen 3 games between themselves or on a one-way trip forward into Gen 4, not back into Gen 3 afterward. Same deal for Gen 4 going into Gen 5.

If you want to trade FR/LG to RSE, you'll need to reach the full Sevii Islands in FR/LG and obtain both the Ruby and Sapphire key-items - a post-game quest. I don't recall what - if any - requirements are needed on the RSE side of things.

Trading into HG/SS requires no HM moves on the Gen 3 'mons, but you can give them hold items. I believe you have to reach Kanto and head down to Koga's old town to find the Pal Park where the Safari zone used to be, whereafter the option to import from Gen 3 carts inserted into the DS/DS Lite secondary slot *should* appear in the NEWGAME/CONTINUE/ETC screen after starting up HG/SS.
You're ultimately looking at another post-game wait to reach the Pal Park, though.

Going into Gen 5 is where I think you can't have hold items, and again you have to wait until defeating the main game to trade forward from Gen 4.

Thanks for all the awesome info guys and it looks like I have a (probably hilarious) gap in knowledge here about the whole function of the pokemon games.

Don't you have to trade something back? is that only ingame trades where you have to actually exchange one mon for another? do you not have to do that trading between games?

if the OT and the trainer receiving have the same name does it affect any typical functions of pokemon? like can I rename my LG starter in B2 since I use Rex for every one of my characters in Pokemon?

The info is fucking awesome, thanks for the help, what really surprises me is that you have to have the cartridges in the same DS o.0 we thought we needed to keep both our DS Lite's to be able to trade but it looks like we can just trade it all to HG/SS and then from there to all our other games on a 3DS. Really fucking excited we can actually get our copies of X/Y and a 3DS now :3 we thought we'd have to save up another month or two (lolstudents D8)

Is there any info being leaked on the plot along with all the 'mons? I'm super curious about post E4 stuff and would imagine after a few days there must be something out? no?

 

The person I'm following hasn't completed the badge quest yet, just collecting and evolving Pokemon. I don't think any of the leakers have finished the main game. All I know is that some 'painting-like' graphics are in the game as the back story of main legendaries is told.

@Vira: I feel you on doublade. I was really hoping for a suit of armor or something. I really like the flabebe evolution though. I hope its stats are decent.

 

Now that I think about it, this new Doublade evo might just be a alternative evolution of its basic blue sword form. I hope so, I want to stay with the double swords with the pink ribbons.
