This has been happening for like a month now, at the very least. I have two laptops, one is a desktop replacement that I use for gaming, and the other is the one I do my school work on.

My issue lays with the gaming computer: I can be playing a game, or it could do it randomly, maybe for twenty or so minutes of gaming, and longer when not, but the computer just shuts totally off.

I am suspecting power supply failure, but it could be something else I suppose, and thats why I'm asking here.

I run Windows 7 Professional x64, on a Qosmio X305 Q710, as far as I know. Has eight gigs of ram, an nVidia 9600m GTS.

Anything else you need to know, just ask.

What are some possible diagnosing techniques, solutions, etc.

Does it always happen when there is more stuff going on in your computer (such as gaming or having a lot of windows open etc, sorry for the poorly phrased question)? It could be that cooling fan isn't working/isn't strong enough and your computer shuts off when it overheats.

Apparently there have been issues with x305s overheating. Get a tool like speedfan and check out your system temperatures.

Its crashed when I've been gaming, and other times, it crashes while I'm sleeping. I have it set to go to sleep after 20 minutes of inactivity, but instead of going into hibernate, it totally crashes.

Thanks World, I have that program downloaded, so I'll check it out later tonight when I start gaming again.

Zombie, that graphics card of yours is fairly notorious for causing crashes as well. You may want to ask that to be replaced. I have read a lot on the 9600's bad manufacturing.

    Just a head's up.

What do you think would be a good replacement?

It's a laptop right, Zombie? In that case they will not put in a different card but just replace the one you have with the same model. It's luck that you get one that isn't malfunctioning after the change. I don't think they will put in a different one, but if they do I'd say anything that is not x6xxx range.

This happened with our desktop not too long ago, and it did turn out to be the computer overheating.

So, need to add corrections to this, and instead of starting an entirely new thread about it, figured I'd do it here again, just because I'm interested in seeing whats going on, again.

I was playing Civs IV the other day, High Graphics settings, and everything was good for about 30 minutes, and the next thing I know my computer shuts down fully. Complete power stoppage. Afterwards, it boots back up normally, and everything is fine. All indications point to my system over heating.

    My system is this:
    Toshiba Qosmio X305 - Q710
    Windows 7 Professional x64
    8 gigs RAM
nVidia 9700m GTS <-- Before I wrote it down wrong, and its the 9700, not the 9600.

Steps I've taken to fix this has been to elevate it, put it on one of those cooling pads you can buy at a computer supply shop for like 20 bucks -- It both elevates and blows airs into the intake fans on the bottom. This seemed to work for a bit, but the crashing has started back up.

It also doesn't crash at any point when I'm using it for viewing video/surfing the net/other graphically intensive programs.

    Games it has crashed on:
    TF2
    Arkham Asylum
    Civs IV
    L4D
    L4D2

It works fine on my other games, which is kinda funny considering that FO3 used to give me so much shit when I played it.

I've replaced the battery, replaced the network card, software is all fully updated and compliant. The only thing I can see the issue being is that its over heating, and I used that diagnostic tool that World suggest in an earlier post. It did seem to indicate that it was over heating. Googling of my video card has showed no failures or structural flaws that I've seen, but my google-fu could be weak.

Any thoughts on this would be great. I'm willing to buy replacement parts for it, but I want to know what's going wrong with it first before I start buying shit all willy-nilly. Also, other tips and suggestions for keeping the system cooled.

    Thanks guize :3

Might have shit clogging up your air intake/fans. Try spraying a can of air into them and see if that helps (shouldn't cost more than a few dollars).

Set the monitoring programs to log the files somewhere so you can see exactly what temperature it shuts off at. Also, get Right mark CPU utility, which is a great tool that lets you under clock your CPU, and by doing this you can shave off temperature in return for a performance drop.

Also monitor your GPU, i use GPU-Z, set it to log temps during games. Also a long shot but try and update your graphics card drivers, I'd suggest some forceware.
