What KingRoger said. Like I said, I do like tthe fic, it's entertaining and all and I did recognize the Valeyard reference, but that's still not a plot, yet.

 

A new chapter's come out, if anyone's interested. It's not quite as well written, in my opinion, as the other chapters, but it's got some plot-ish elements.

 

I just read the latest chapter. It's been a while since this story was last reviewed and I think it deserves another look at this point.

I would describe the writing as both surreal and cryptic - there aren't signs 'plot here' like you might find in other stuff. The plot is developing and as others have said the characterisation of the doctor is excellent.

There have been moments that turned me off, myrtle's in particular but the slytherin/gryffindor thing actually aids the story so I can accept it.

Bump because there was an update yesterday, and I've been reading my way through the fic for most of the week (there's a good fifteen chapters or so since I last checked it out).

So, the positives. It's funny. Not laugh out loud funny, perhaps, more sly little lines that leave you grinning, but still very funny.
There's a sense of whimsy to everything that is just sublime. It perfectly captures the illogical nature of magic and Hogwarts, and in addition has probably the best depiction of Hogwarts as an actual school that I've ever seen. ForrestUUID just nails the cast as actual kids, and ties that in with digressions on magical linguistics, origins, and philosophy that are utterly convincing.
The Doctor (or the Rupert, or the Tutor, or whatever he happens to be calling himself in any given chapter), is just perfect. I haven't ever seen such a good rendition of the Eleventh's style in any fic ever.
Tying the above points together, there's something sumptuous about the writing that's hard to pin down, but utterly delightful.

HOWEVER.

The negative.
35 chapters, three or four years in real time, and we've just reached November of Harry's first year. To call this a slow burner is both accurate and a staggering understatement.
Coupled with that, while a lot has occurred, not much has happened. The Doctor and Harry have explored Hogwarts, improving things and people's lives and generally being eccentric, they've invented self-legilimency, they've seen Dumbledore's memories and a bunch of other things...but it still isn't clear what the actual plot is, beyond a vague intention to get the Doctor out of Harry's head. Maybe there isn't one, of course. It could just be a character piece.

For me though, there's enough to enjoy from the positives that I'm happy giving it a 4/5 for the moment. It's a real love or hate story though, I would guess.
