I like the idea of Harry being self-taught.

According to JKR, Dumbledore WAS SELF-TAUGHT.

I ain't got no problem with it.

As for Hand-to hand combat....I don't buy it.

Its like Indiana Jones. They know all these Karate Moves, he pulls out his gun and shoots the guy. (Wizards in my world can block a bullet FYI.)

Read the duel with Rookwood over again....NAvy Seals and other military units have weapons...guess what....they're still taught hand to hand combat.

    Some basic military-level self-defense moves? - maybe.

Crazy Shaolin kung-fu stuff with dual katanas, shirokens, throwing knives and crazy gymnastics? - no way.

Harry is a wizard, not karate kid.

Glad to hear...see...whatever....It's dissapointing that as hand to hand combat is mentioned people automatically think of--->Crazy Shaolin kung-fu stuff with dual katanas, shirokens, throwing knives and crazy gymnastics.

Sorry, but too many authors are mixing spellwork with hand to hand combat, melee weapons and throwing knives (and then throw in a bunch of chinese terms to support it).

If I ever give Harry any other weapon besides his wand, it would rather be a pistoil than some lame arse throwing knife.

Weapons in general besides a wand= Lame, pistol= Lame, throwing knife = Lame, hunting knife = not so lame, but still lame.

EDIT: In fact a hunting knife[not a throwing knife] seems the most plausable out of all to use as a secondary.....lose your wand...stab your attacker in his chest...

Harry was about to walk into Voldemort's hidden lair. This was it. He took a deep breath to check that his weapons were all in the appropriate place.

His throwing knives were attached to his calf, his heel blade was snapped in, his left gun was holstered on his hip, his Shotgun was strapped across his back along with his dual Swords. His Hunting knife was strapped to his inner thigh as usual, and his 6mm Beretta was attached to his outer thigh. His nunchucks were strapped to his left fore-arm and his wand was attached to his right arm.

The sun rose and set as Harry checked his weapons, until, eventually, Harry starved to death halfway through securing his hidden blow-darts.

I concur. The guns were only interesting concepts for the first two stories that I read. The throwing!knives werer worse than lame.

Give him a short blade (any would do), and two wands (one for backup) and he should be fine. What's the use with a sword? It's cool yeah, but impractical. an axe would work so much better ;)

on the other hand, he has an invisibility cloak, so give him a bunch of C4 to rig.

Mmm... Personally, i prefer grenades. I'd like to see some author using the remote detonated sheep from worms though... Or the holy hand grenade. Add a baseball bat while you're at it. 8)

If you were to use a gun, you could give him something small like a derringer that he could hide up his sleeve. That way it's easily hidden, and he could use it in case he loses his wand or something.

I'd prefer it if he just punched some fucker rather than using muggle weapons. The whole idea of muggle weapons in the wizarding world doesn't sit well with me. It reminds me of that fic where Harry kills Voldy with a gun as well, can't remember the name of it at this point though. Though I suppose a gun is better than a Lightsaber and Wolverine claws, I'd just prefer not to see it though.

I think throw-knives could be excellent weapons suppliment in magical combat depending on how the author develops his story. Say magical theory allows two general forms of shields: magical, anti-curse ones, and barrier/physical shields.

So Harry could pack half a dozen handy knifes dipped with poison or some kind of potion that turns acidic or burns upon contact with an enzyme in human blood. He charms his throw-knives with a physical piercing charm and fires it at the enemy. The enemy thinks it's physical attack and conjures a physical shield, which the knife penetrates, lodges in some part of his body and kills him. Voila, a mid to decently powerful DE or whatever is killed/incapacitated in a rather original and tactiful manner.

I wouldn't mind reading about that...heck I might write it.

    NO!!!

I hate throwing knives. Guns make more sense to me. The problem with guns is it makes it too easy. I can't imagine that wizards wouldn't have used them before against each other if they were SO MUCH more effective.

Hunting knife is just a good tool to have. Air-force Knife is even better. It offers protection and other functions. Maybe a K-Bar?

Bottom line is that throwing knives SUCK. They are useless.

Well, in this fic I'll be using the theory I've stated in Final Straw thread.

A bullet has small energy compared with any spell.

That's why wizards can cast & hold invisible shild against fast approaching objects. So, bullets, arrows, throwing knives, darts and pretty much any other flying object of smaller mass would be easily bounced back by that shield (if wizard remembers/bothers to cast it).

In any case, Harry will be using his wand and carry a switchblade as backup. That's it (for now).
