It should feel not at all like Power Rangers?

    Well, I mean, here's the thing -- it isn't.

I'm just saying, I think a lot of you are going to be very disappointed when the actual movie comes out. And you complaining that Power Rangers of all things isn't grimdark is going to be just as stupid then as it is now. I think it'd be a safer bet to expect something more along the lines of The Avengers or, probably, Guardians of the Galaxy.

We are on DLP. Think back to the first Harry Potter movie 15 years ago and how you felt when you watched it. Now, fast forward to how you felt when you watched the eighth movie. The last one was decidedly more violent than the first, even if it was all graphics.

Still, it all felt Harry Potter. We never doubted that the boy who pulled Voldemort down the cliff was the same one who was having some difficulty performing Wingardium Leviosa.

This bootleg is the same. They have managed to capture the essence of the series in a world which is darker and where blood is flown. Doesn't mean it isn't Power Rangers anymore.

I too liked watching Ninja Storm and Dino thunder on Jetix. It was crazy. But now, I am not opposed to watching it all in this new way.

And yes, I know they won't make it like this and we all would be disappointed but we still have the right to wish, don't we? Or is there a copyright on that as well?

I enjoyed the video in the spirit in which it was intended: as a piece of fanfiction.

The beauty of fanfic, as we all know, is to take the original and re-invent or re-work it somehow.

Is it true to the original feel of Power Rangers? No, not in the least. But Power Rangers is a fucking kids' show, meant to be nothing more than flashy colors and fight sequences to get kids to watch commercials and buy action figures.

This was an adult take on the basic concept. (I'd argue that some pretty decent and well-loved HP fic does the same thing. Frank Miller writing the Batman comics did the same thing.) In that way, I think it was brilliant.

Also, the special effects were miles better than the original show.

I enjoyed it. I don't expect the real movie to be like this, but I think a step towards it would be a step in the right direction (Lionsgate wants it to attract the same teen audience that The Hunger Games does, so they're going to make it darker and 'grittier' to make it more appealing to that demographic. I just hope they don't go overboard).

The only ridiculous part that I couldn't stomach was the ending, and how bad I thought Tommy's actor was.

So I'm of two minds about this.

As a film student and a writer, I fucking loved the film piece. it was awesome, if a bit low-tech and low-budget, but it's a fan film, nothing to be surprised by there. If it were spun into a full blown movie with a full movie budget, it could be spectacular.

That said, JDF recently spoke about the video and how he couldn't support it based on the fact that it goes too far, and it's not kid-friendly enough. I get where he's coming from and I understand the outpouring of people echoing his thoughts.

So a compromise would totally benefit both sides. Make it grittier, make it more real, but leave it at a PG-13 level. I mean, look at Pirates of the Carribean. It's rated PG-13 but it still follows the laws of reality (where allowed) and even shows blood (The Chest Shot). It's a dark, gritty imagining of a silly and fun theme park ride.

The same could be made for this show. It all depends on how the directors and producers handle it.

What I really don't want though, is a cheesy remake filled with crap dialogue and highly robotic fight choreography.

I'll hold my final thoughts for whenever they release the actual film.

PR was my childhood and I'm all for darker and grittier remakes, but this was just out there. Still, what scenes they showed with them suited up were sick (that glimpse we got of the Zord fight looked crazy). Also, I got a Star Wars vibe during the part with the black ranger. Like he was leading the troops/clones as the face of the army...and was eventually betrayed.

Now, if they do make a movie I hope it's an origin story, but a darker retelling of the original series. Maybe give the originals a cameo - give JDF his Stan Lee moment and leave it at that.

Rocky was Jason's replacement. He was the second Red Mighty Morphin' Power Ranger and was the Blue Zeo Ranger.

Okay, post em up. Going to need the best/darkest/realest PR stories you've got, not including Darker Shade of Green or Agony in Pink (if you haven't heard about the latter...well, you're better off not knowing.)

I liked it a lot. It was fun, campy, but still very good quality. For a fan made film, it shits all over the quality of quite a bit of "Hollywood" stuff put out in a good while
