Okay, so I'm getting ready to order a new computer. Got some cash saved up, and I need a new one for my final semester of college. Because of my major, it needs to be able to run AutoCAD, along with other Autodesk products. AutoCAD is the main one, though.

Anyways, since I know next to fucking nothing about Processors, here's my question.

Intel Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon dual-core processor, 3 GHz or higher with SSE2 technology- That's what I need to run AutoCAD

Intel Core 2 Duo P7450 (2.13GHz/1600MhzFSB/3MB Cache)- That's the processor that comes with the laptop I'm looking at.

Again, since I don't know shit about processors, I'm a little confused. I know that a Core 2 processor is better then a Pentium 4, but the 3 GHz requirement worries me, since the one I'm looking at only has 2.13GHz. Could someone tell me if it's good enough or what?

Processor frequency is not really something to measure by between families of chips. A P4 3GHz (even a P4-Duo) will choke and die on what a 2GHz Core 2 Duo can do.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't AutoCAD also need a certain level of graphics to work efficiently?

I know when I bought my laptop that there were a lot of reviews on my graphics card talking about how this wasn't a gaming card, it was a professional graphics card for things like AutoCAD, etc. (Nvidia Quadro 570M or something)

It could just be that it helps and isn't really a requirement, just like having one helps with higher end games but some will play fine without one, but that thought comes to mind. What type of graphics does the laptop you are looking at have?

Yeah, it requires a good graphics card, especially for the 3-d work. I don't remember what the card in the computer I'm looking at was, but I checked like a week ago, and it was good enough.

I've been told AMD CPUs have been better than Pentium for years. I'd go with an Athlon CPU.

Not since the Core 2 Duos rolled off the line. Since then Intel has been kicking ass and taking names.
