The crux of the house elf debate is that if tomorrow you passed a law freeing all of them, 99% would keep doing exactly what they were doing yesterday. I do think they should be (per the letter of the law) freed, for the rare Dobby-esque house elf, but no one should pretend it's going to change the average house-elf's life.

 

Isn't that what happened to black slaves in America? After the Civil War, a good portion of the former slaves had no choice but to go back to their former masters because they had no capital to start their "free" life.

By your logic, we shouldn't have sacrificed so many American lives in civil war if African Americans were initially just going to do the same thing as before. Just because integrating former slaves into society isn't easy, doesn't mean it shouldn't be done at all.

 

He literally said in the post that you quoted that they should be freed.

 

Only for the "rare Dobby-esque house elf" instead of all of them. It would be like someone from the 19th century saying that only the smart black men should be freed, instead of all of them.

 

Except that that's also not what he said. If you actually read it he said that all of them should be freed, but that only the Dobby-esque ones would show immediate changes to their way of life. If anything the historical precedent you're bringing up supports exactly what he said- that freeing them is the right thing to do but expecting immediate widespread lifestyle changes is silly and just wouldn't happen.

 

I read his comment again and I have determined that you're right, I must have misread it at some point.
