Maybe he thought himself above the curse.

Doubtful, being so close to Dumbledore, he was probably informed of who exactly had cast the curse in the first place. Whatever he might have thought of himself, I doubt he considered being an equal, or superior, to Voldemort.

Maybe he didn't care the first time he asked for the job, it was just something he could do that would save Dumbledore the trouble of finding another DADA professor. But year after year Snape gets rejected, and he wonders why. Seeing all the incompetents (in his opinion at least) must make it even worse.

Do we actually know that Snape wanted the job and kept being turned down for it, or was just something that we hear through Harry's POV, meaning it may or may not be accurate.

    I honestly can't remember.

Doesn't he tell Umbridge in OotP that he applied for the job many times? Or was that in the film?

He confirms it himself. Umbridge asks him if he applied, and I think she might even have asked if he's reapplied, to which he responds in the positive. Then she asks if he wasn't successful, and we get that ONE FUCKING MOMENT in the whole series where we're on Snape's side as he slaps her down with his drawling "obviously."

    EDIT: fucking ninjas.

I remember reading this one fanfic, I can't remember the name or what it was generally about, where Snape was finally granted the DADA post, but something happened, again I don't remember what, that lead to Dumbledore telling him he granted him that post because he thought the curse on the post would finish him off, as he didn't want to do it himself. Or something like that.

I know what fic you're talking about. It's after Snape gets Harry to duel with him and gets so frustrated that Harry is able to match him that he starts trying to inflict harm on to Harry before Harry incapacitates him.

Don't remember the title or anything else.

Hm, that's weird. I remember a fic like that too. If anybody figures out the name, let me know.

Is it ever explained how Dumbledore managed to enchant the Mirror of Erised to hold the stone? Seems rather weird that Dumbledore was able to alter the mirror. If I recall it just shows you want you want most. I feel like as much as Harry wants the stone, he still wants his parents more. Why was it necessary to use the Mirror of Erised and not a normal mirror?

It was necessary to use the Mirror of Erised in order to use the mirror's unique power to determine your true desire. Though there seems to be a fair amount of magic that reads intent, one assumes that this magic can be fooled via something like occlumency. The mirror, however, is a powerful one-of-a-kind artifact. It is perhaps impossible to fool it and hide your true desire from it.

I have the weirdest deja-vu right now. I could have sworn I wrote basically exactly what I am thinking now before in response to basically the same question, but it doesn't appear to be in the thread o_O

And on top of that, the answer would have been wrong. Perhaps that's why I didn't write it? Weird as hell. I think I need a vacation.

Anyway, yeah, the Pyrenees. Seeing as they are not, in fact, terribly near the Provence, I'm going with the (non-Pottermore-retconned) answer of "Beauxbatons is near Cannes". All things considered, it fits better.

Lots of Indy!Harry stories have him take up Ancient Runes and Arithmancy. But do either of these subjects have any practical use in canon? The only use of Runes I can remember in canon is translation. And also some etchings on the pensieve, if I remember correctly.

We know that you need arithmancy to be a cursebreaker, which is a practical profession, so we can infer that arithmancy has some practical application.

We know from IRL that arithmancy is prediction using numbers. Given that it is separate from divination, I don't see it as predicting the future, but rather predicting the outcome of a hypothetical interaction i.e. modelling. Magical, linguistic, and physical concepts are transformed into a numerical representation, and those representations can be manipulated via arithmetical operations to see how they change under various conditions.

It's like the numerology game kids sometimes do in school where you assign numbers to letters, calculate the numerical value of your name and thus determine which person in your class is your "partner". Only, you know, more complex.

My headcanon is that cursebreakers use arithmancy to determine how a curse/protection spell will respond to various different strategies to undo it, and thereby avoid the risk of actually attempting techniques that might get them killed from a bad reaction. Instead they do the arithmancy until they find a strategy that they know will work -- assuming they did their arithmancy right.

Am I just misremembering things, mixing up fanfic and canon stuff, or do silk pouches somehow lessen the effects of Horcruxes? I mean, when you put the objects in silk pouches.
