We know that he claimed to be under the Imperius Curse. What I'm not 100% sure of right now is whether he actually had a trial and was acquitted, or whether he wasn't even accused to begin with.

Additionally, given his bribing of Fudge, it doesn't seem too far fetched to assume money also played a role, though nothing to that effect is said.

Mhm, not really sure, Crouch Sr. didn't seem to be someone who let himself be bribed.

Now that would be interesting as hell. I'd put my money on AD, but we really have no idea of what Maxine is capable of :)

We only know that Dumbledore was a transfiguration prodigy. Madam Maxime and Karkarov are completely unknown. Though I would imagine they were both more talented than the average witch or wizard.

Nope, Dumbledore was great at everything. He can cast the Fidelius Charm, mastered the Patronus, knew Occlumency/Legilimency better than most, did things with a wand that Griselda Marshbanks had never seen before, worked with Nicolas Flamel on the 12 Uses of Dragon Blood, enchanted the Mirror of Erised to hide the Philosopher's Stone and was able to defeat his would be equal while he was wielding the Elder Wand.

Dumbledore was a prodigy when he was a child. He grew up to become the Beethoven of the magical world.

Yeah, Dumbledore is better than everyone at basically everything with the exception of:

    1. Voldemort is better than him in some vaguely defined branches of magic (he makes some mention of Voldemort having gone further than others, of Voldemort knowing more about certain magic than him, but I don't recall anything specific.), but they seem about equally matched. This is muddled by Dumbledore having the Elder Wand in the duels we see between them, so Voldemort may be better than him. Dumbledore calls Voldemort the best student Hogwarts has ever seen, so that's pretty suggestive.

    2. I think Snape is just as good as Dumbledore in Occlumency, seeing as he deceived Voldemort (an extremely skilled Legilimens) for years.

One way to understand Dumbledore's abilities, is to understand the form his character took within the story. His role falls squarely within, and in fact, strongly resembles three other characters, all of who are vastly superior to most all other beings in strength—Gandalf, Merlin, and as Dave Kopel has written, "The bearded God the Father" in Little Pilgrim's Progress.

Comparison across works of fiction won't produce a one-to-one ratio for understanding his abilities, but understanding the role his character played in a very common literary form should at least show that he was far superior to almost anyone else.

Does anyone know what happened to The Santis fic? Did he get busy or bored with it? I tried to read the story thread but its so huge I couldn't pick out any official word on its status.

IRL stuff interfered, from what I gathered.

Anyhoo, has Rowling ever elaborated how the Patronus messaging works? I mean, they send off a message with their Patronus, but how does it get there? Does it cross the physical distance in its shining form or does it go stealth mode until it reaches its target?

I think it's more of a Notice-me-not type of deal rather than muggle repelling

Like the fact that the Grangers knew about it meant that they could see it anytime and not just if they were accompanied by Hermione or another Witch/Wizard. Also I like to think Witches and Wizards who were Foreign or had never been to The Leaky Cauldron would not notice it either unless it was pointed out or they knew it was there.

I know that JK Rowling has said that the love potion that that Tom Riddle was conceived under meant that he could feel no love, but is it also possible that the potion could have somehow also increased his magical power(making him more powerful than the average wizard) than he would have had he not been born under a love potion?

Rowling never said that. As I've pointed out before, the 'love potion' -> 'no love' thing is not canon. It is a piece of out-of-universe symbolism, not in-universe metaphysics. Rowling explicitly destroys the idea in the very quote it is introduced.

To be fair, being born from a love potion could mean he had incredibly large testicles, to pass on the lurve. And we all know magical prowess is directly correlated with scrotum size.
