...is simply the fastest, easiest, and most cost-effective way of speeding up your system. I upgraded my laptop's ram from 512mb to 2gb (the upper limit) and it now flies. My intense programs now have enough ram and run fast, with no disk swapping (I turned it off as a test, but I might reenable it.)

My laptop needs a defrager. I have updated its RAM, but I didn't really see a difference.

    Yeah, RAM is nice :)

But if the hard drive is to fucked then nothing matters.

I defrag my laptop once a week. Same thing goes for my now nearly 10 year old PC. Still runs Windows 96 OS :)

And it currently runs better than my 3 year old macintosh.

I keep meaning to buy some RAM myself. I currently have 512mb and was thinking of taking that up to 1gig. Of course I've been meaning to buy a sound card and a graphics card for near on four months so there's no saying I'll actually ever get round to it.

Cervus, nice new ava and sig. Neway, I just need to defrag my mac (when it gets fixed) and I should be okay. That and shuting it down once in a while will help a lot.

If you're actually running WinXP on that can I hope that you've at least tweaked the services so you don't have half a million processing loading in the background on you? If you need it I managed to nab a copy of the blckviper guides right before he disappeared again...so if you need some hand holding this guide can make your laptop feel brand new! Its the post SP2 edition of the guide too, so its probably more up to date than the copies floating around...

Can you send it to me? If it's not to long it would be fun to read it.

Here's a real basic copy of the guides for 2000 and for XPSP2--It's ugly black text on White background because of the way BV used css on his site and I can't be arsed to try and fix the colours at the moment. If anyone is interested I have the entire domain archived and it comes to right under 30mbs in RAR format...

Have fun! And tell me what the difference is if any (there will be a difference tho'!) just be sure to read the notes in the Detailed guide to the services as well as follow the tables. Personally I always start with changing everything to 'SAFE' settings and then slowly tweaking my way towards perfection from there. As he said on one of the incarnations of his site:

    --bornagainpenguin

PS: I'd assume you'd know this if you read the guide but be sure to use services.msc and NOT MSConfig.exe, as that will not work and will likely foul up your system. Good Luck!
